AskWoody PlusJoe:
Thanks for the Easy Transfer update and the house cleaning suggestion. I have a program that searches for duplicate files plus another one that searches for duplicate photos, and I have already started getting rid of duplicates.

AskWoody PlusJoe:
Again, thanks for your prompt reply, and addressing all 5 of my questions.
The Microsoft video on the page you referenced says to start the setup with the NEW computer, which is why I asked the question in my previous post.
And in regards to #5, another of Windows many documents of this subject says you can transfer the files and settings before installing the programs.
So that confusion is why I come to the experts at WindowsSecrets for the real answers!

AskWoody PlusSee if Transferring files and settings: frequently asked questions answers some of your questions.
However, it might be best to run Easy Transfer on the XP system to find out what it does.
Joe
Thanks for your prompt reply.
I had already checked that Microsoft link. Sadly it did not help.
Not sure what you mean ‘run Easy Transfer on my XP system……’? Doesn’t it require two computers to work? How else would I know what got placed where on the new computer?

AskWoody PlusDid you look on the Java Control Panel and look on the Update tab, there should be a box that you can uncheck that says Check for Updates Automatically. That should hopefully stop the update notices that you are seeing.
Did that several days before I posted my original message here. That did not stop the update notices from coming.
It re-reading my post, that step was not very clear.

AskWoody PlusThanks, guys, for all your help. Mr. Leonhard did indeed say to install the latest version first before disabling (which I did). But the Oracle help page on the subject said the same thing, so I assumed that somehow the latest version and the disabling were related.
As Jerry suggested, I ran msconfig.exe, and unchecked Java Auto update. Several months ago I had used Startup Cop Pro to disable Java Update Scheduler, but obviously that did not do it.
BTW, I’ve never been called an ‘OP’ before. Is that good or bad?

AskWoody PlusCtrl + F brings up a browser search box that search the current web page. Works on any web page with IE, Firefox, and Chrome.
Jerry
I have Opera 12,and it works there also.
To Bruce R again. I just went through about 40 pending updates on my XP and Win 7 computers: using first, the Search on Newsletter Archives, and 2nd, the Ctrl+F on whatever page I chose from the Archive search. It worked just great, and very quick. I have only subscribed to Windows Secrets for a couple of years, but if this two-step approach to find updates has never been covered in an article in the newsletter, it should. What a time and aggravation saver!
Thanks again for the tip,
Harry

AskWoody PlusYou can search the newsletter archives (top right) for the KB number (without the KB, as Susan Bradley inserts a space).
Or go to the master Patch Watch chart page and search using Ctrl+F (again; number only, no KB)
Bruce
Bruce: GREAT suggestions! I found the Ctrl+F feature works on the other Windows Secrets pages as well.
I realize that Ms. Bradley addresses security patches only. CTRL+F got to me some old ones that I could not find otherwise.

You do, and it does.
Bruce
I have the same problems/confusion as suenewby regarding XP updates from Ms. Bradley, and I do not understand your response. Could you expand on it?
And is there any way to search for a specific update KB number on Windows Secrets?
Thanks in advance for the clarification,
Harry

Thanks for the link. After reading the Microsoft article, I did a little searching and found that my back up program has an option: “Pin to Start Menu.” Checking that solved the problem.

That takes you to the same Notification Area as the suggestion that 5 Star Lounger made. Selecting them individually does not work when the program in question does not load in the Start up menu. See my original post for the details.

That works, but it also makes me display a lot of icons on the task bar that I do not want to see. I want to be able to either just select the ones I want (and not have those selections go away on reboot), or have the Windows default be ‘Show icons and notifications’, rather than ‘Only show notifications’, which is what it appears to be.

Sorry. I did not want to offend anyone, or want you to appear that you were endorsing my choice. I just wanted to let folks know that there are other alternatives.
FYI, I read the Amazon reviews, as well as reviews on other similar programs; and I tested lots of them on my computer. I stand by my comments.

AskWoody PlusA good article. I have found, unfortunately, that for building websites, free versions are worth what you paid for them. As an alternative, you might suggest to your readers WebEasy Pro, which costs $49, but really has some great capabilities, is very easy to use and to set up your own special pages (http://www.avanquest.com/USA/software/webeasy-professional-10-new-version-500665?meta=work&cat=design&sub=web-design). They also do hosting, at a reasonable price.
Their instructions are not the easiest to follow. If someone decides to buy it, I suggest they spend another $19 and get WebEasy on Steroids (http://www.webeasyinstruction.com/). Steroids also has a great forum.
I have created some fairly complex websites with WebEasy and the help of the guys on the Steroid Forum.
