AskWoody LoungerSorry. I’ve been swatting hardware flies.
Issue is that IE9 and CHROME began displaying the same issue. If I went to a site, or a part of a site, protected by https: I could get the correct address to display and the green bar which works its way across the address would start — or even complete — but only a blank white page would appear. One modification: in going to a site which would display a logo and name/password challenge, the logo would appear but the name & password information and boxes would not display.
After working this issue locally and on the web, I broke down and got the on-line for pay folks to help. It took 45 minutes and a journey in truly unusual places in WIN7 but now IE9 works. Reason: “it just happens sometime.” Hence the shotgun approach methinks. CHROME is still broken.

AskWoody LoungerAnd the rain keeps pouring! DELL today said the monitors won’t meet the 6 Feb delivery. Now it is 22 Feb! I’ve gone from two 20 inch monitors and two computers working though a KVM switch to a 17 monitor hooked up to one or the other computer. Real monitor pain.

AskWoody LoungerAh, the wonders of the cyberrealm.
I installed the new video card (in order to have DVI outs to match the required DVI Dual Link cabling required by my new KVM switch. I loosened a power connector on the mobo in the process and was not able to power up — although I could see the mobo power light come on. Tried what I could; trip to shop; all is well. But wait! The two Samsung SynchMaster monitors — which had been getting persnickety about turning on — flat refused to play nice. I discovered on line that the behavior I was getting is a known fatal fault condition. A Samsung tech (a good crowd by the way) walked me through a test and confirmed that the monitors needed servicing. (Which means $120 non-refundable deposit each plus sending them to New Jersey. No promises. But Samsung would send it or them back once serviced. Also he suggested the Best Buy Geek Squad to get another offer.) I checked locally and with two Geek Squad techs at different stores. 100% advised buying new — which was my feeling going in.
Then, have you tried to find two DVI monitors in the 20 to 22 inch range under $250 recently? The best options are all sold out. Even at Walmart! Forced me to buy from Dell. And now I’m using a neighbors 17 inch Dell. He has gone to Apple and it was just laying around. New monitors expected … in February.
Need for inventory check has been superseded. Thanks all.
Oh, yesterday one of my UPSes let me know it was kaput. -

AskWoody LoungerGood observation. I thought there would be an on-line notice of any response. Nada. So I got on today and, yes!
Bad news is that I will be upgrading my video card on this box tomorrow or Saturday so it will probably be Sunday or Monday before I check out anything. Thanks, though! -

AskWoody LoungerI have several layers of backup and other drives on the same machine and on external drives. Mercifully. That said. this is the first time I’ve had data corruption on some files and not others. And then there is the painfully slow reads on that HD. What’s going on?
Thanks all. I have run check disk but not from a CD to repair. I didn’t want to muck things up more than they were. That may be a worthwhile effort at this point! -

AskWoody LoungerBeen there; done that. What a pain — it took me two months to find the fix.

AskWoody LoungerThanks, I’ll give it a try.

AskWoody LoungerFunny that this thread is here today.
Last week I cranked up my two year old Win 7 Pro 64 bit machine, put in my password and went to get a drink. I heard a furious fan sound and returned just as it stopped and did not return. The next day I stayed around and it started after the password and continued until the last of the START UP items loaded. On the third day, I got the dancing lines/squares/colors you describe upon starting up.
I cracked open the box and looked around and ran some tests. I’ve been making my own ‘puters since the 1980s. I could confirmed fans were okay, drives were okay, CPU seemed to be working since I could make out the full boot sequence amongst the static. Cleaned it although it had little dust.
At a local repair point the techs checked here and there and swapped out the video card. Voila, it worked. They looked carefully at my card and discovered at 3 of four black topped caps had blown to the point they had actually burst through tops a bit. They replaced them and it is working. We are all interested in seeing if the fault repeats. The video card is a MSI GEFORCE 9500 GT. Both video outs are used to push dual monitors through a KVM switch. Other computer shows no signs of any failure. Both computers are behind separate UPSs and the ethernet cable runs through a switch for the house network. The cabled themwlves run through separate data filters on separate power strips. Although we get a lot of lightning in these parts, there has hardly been a dark cloud in the sky for the last 10 days or so.
Needless to say I am very interested in what might cause this behavior! -

AskWoody LoungerGot it. Thanks.

AskWoody LoungerThanks. I think REVO is what I was looking for. It was mentioned in a recent WINDOWSSECRETS yes?
