    • in reply to: Get Office Copilot now — without paying #2713161

My Windows 11 laptop popped up with a beta version of CoPilot a few weeks ago, and I used it to help find material for footnotes to provide a couple of sentences about people (mostly public figures) whose names were given in transcribed interviews.  I always double-checked what it said, but it was pretty impressive in its accuracy most of the time and was no-nonsense in its interface, quite sleek.  It always provided links to its sources.  Then, on the Windows update that came a week or so ago, the sleek CoPilot went away and a chatty one that wanted to know my name and asked me to choose a voice for it etc., etc. came up instead.  I quit using it for that reason.  I wish they’d have left it alone.

I’ve also tried the DuckDuckGo AI, but it’s really untrustworthy, alas.  I generally need birth and death years for people, and it gives wrong ones a lot.

After finding the keywords in Susan’s complaint:

Prior to the new File Explorer, basic operations such as cut, copy, delete, and rename were simply text items on the context menu. It made them easy to find. But with the new UI, I found myself staring at the new presentation and taking forever to remember the icon for copy.

I checked online for possible fixes and found one at:

      https://www.pcgamer.com/windows-11-context-menu-fix-right-click/

But I’m not sure whether it’s safe to try.  Can one of you more experienced people let me know?

    • Thanks, Paul!  And thanks for introducing me to the MiniTools products.

    • in reply to: Karen’s Power Tools EOL ? #2548722

I have been happily using Karen’s Replicator for a couple of years now, but today the log seems to have stopped working.  It doesn’t seem to be clearing.  Instructions appear that say I should save the log information in a text file, but when I try to do that the program stops responding and crashes.

Does anyone know a way to clear out the log other than to uninstall the whole program and reinstall it?

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Windows 10 22H2 may leave you blue #2512011

A couple of weeks ago I was trying to install some audio-processing software I’d purchased about a decade ago onto my fairly new Dell Windows 10 PC and suddenly got the blue screen of death and demand for a BitLocker recovery key, which I’d never heard of. I was able to find the key, but the slot for it on the screen wouldn’t allow me to type it in, so I ended up resetting my PC. Something that surprised me was that you can no longer do a safe boot by pressing F8. I guess I’ve not had problems to solve by doing that for quite a while.

    • Thanks again, Moonshine.  It turns out that I DO use Reader View a lot with the New York Times.  However, this duplication also happens with the website for National Public Radio.  I just confirmed that it causes duplicate images there, too.

    • I use Firefox, and the Reader View function is built in.  Thanks.

    • Moonshine — Thank you! I didn’t know about the “Windows features on or off” before. I did what you suggested, but there wasn’t a change — I’ve just noticed that the double image seems to be created when I ask for the “Reader View,” — even before I try printing. So, I should have asked how to view in “Reader View” without seeing duplicate images, I guess. Is there anything you know I can do about that? Thanks again.

    • Thank you, Paul.  I have several alternative PDF readers, but it turns out the duplicate images are generated by the “Reader View” rather than the “Print to PDF” function in Microsoft 10.  I’m hoping to find a resolution to that.
