    • in reply to: Big W 10 update. #1537393

The update turned up on my laptop yesterday evening. Download about 10 min. or less, installation; 1h 20 min. which seems a bit too long though no problems encountered (i3 Intel processor, 2.4 GHz).
However, for my desktop PC it has not turned up yet. This is becoming ridiculous on part of MS.

    • in reply to: Big W 10 update. #1537296

I upgraded from W 8.1 to W 10 on July 30- but not via thje *.1 update way ( it always failed for some reason), but downloading the W10 upgrade, and then installing it w/o loosing my applications and personal files. The version I have is 10.0.10240 Build 10240. I have all updates installed since. So, what is the problem that this d…d thing does not show up.

I have the impression that we the customers are the enemy for MS. A bit more customer friendliness would MS do good. I am frustrated. Sorry being harsh.

    • in reply to: Big W 10 update. #1537259

Have you changed the Win 10 Update settings to defer feature upgrades, or whatever it’s called?

There are two or three active topics on this already. Have you checked them?

No, I have not changed to defer updates. Apparently, it seems to be a problem to MS to get it out. Is there no link where one can download it?

    • in reply to: Canon printer class-action settlement #1535310

Thanks for your replies. Since I do not have any major issue with my Canon printer, I will not reply even though it seems they want you to. The case maybe genuine but does not apply to me since the error never appeared on my printer. As a fact, after upgrading to W 10, I had to reinstall that printer again, which had no ill effect at all. Consequently, I will ignore the card.

I buy my ink from inkfarm, and I am happy with their performance.

    • in reply to: Synch Mail in Windows 10 #1519922

The error in Mail gets even worse. I Now get an error with a similar message as above but this time with the error code 0x80070022. The message asks to search with this error code. What comes up are articles which are up to 6 years old, and have nothing to do with this issue. Are they crazy at MS. Who tests all this? The only folder concerned with this is the “Send Items” folder. all other folders synch correctly. The next thing that happened was that a second Sent Items folder appeared, and this one synched. The other still produces the error. When I look into the Outlook.com website everything is ok and there are no duplicate folders. The Outlook.com account is an IMAP.

I have a second email account with a different provider and there the synching functions without a problem.

    • in reply to: Windows 10: Good, but is it good enough? #1519918

I agree with Woody’s judgement. On a scale of 1 -10, I would consider W10 at 4, which is below average. This is mainly because of the “Start” and its apps. I am using the desktop which works fine and use Start only, if there is no other way. It is disappointing what MR. Nadella as the ultimate responsible individual has done here. It is not what was promised, and I doubt whether W 10 will be successful as he believes it to be.

Here are some examples where I am critical of W 10:

1)First “Mail”, I am running constantly into synching problems, i.e. with the this dumb message “Something went wrong…”, no explanation but an error code 0x80070022 and other. Who put such a dumb cryptic message in there. By now MS should be in the position to explain errors to users and their solution, it cannot be sooo difficult.

      2) I do not use Edge. I am unable to work it. I’d rather use Chrome or Firefox. Edge has to be greatly improved before it is in a workable state.

      3) Some little things like setting colors is a mess. It is almost not possible to set colors to the individual liking. But this is only a small thing but points to the ignorance of the MS people.

      4) They made the settings even more complicated. Making a setting rarely makes the user aware of consequences, and after he did a settings wonders why things do work as expected.

Again, I am not happy with w 10, and I wonder whether MS is going back to Ballmer’s times!?

    • in reply to: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro FAILED #1518244

As I wrote above I forced the upgrade! I used this:

If you make any changes to the registry, make a complete back-up.

      1. Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWindowsUpdateOSUpgrade]

2.It should exist, but if not, create it.

3.Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = “AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 0x00000001.

Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”

It worked for me. The upgrade took about an hour which could be expected. Now, the tweaking starts. There is much to tweak. I do not like the way W 10’s setting of colors. That could be done easier. Also, this all white is pretty annoying.

    • in reply to: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro FAILED #1518157

Just FYI. The error 80240020 is the second most problem users are hit with when upgrading. The third one is the break-up of the upgrade with the message “Something happened”. Wonder who put that dumb message at MS into the upgrade. What kind of I****s are doing this at MS.

I will force the upgrade by adding a key in the registry and see what is going to happen.

    • in reply to: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro FAILED #1517996

      @MKR,

I don’t think that Microsoft made a blanket promise of a smooth transition for everyone. They know better. I believe they said they were working hard to make the upgrade work as smoothly as possible for as many users as they can.

A failed upgrade is a painful experience. Did you reserve a copy of Win10 and review any compatibility issues? Was the machine running without problems before the attempted upgrade? Have you attempted to contact Microsoft?

      Joe

Then, why is the upgrade failing. YES, I did reserve a copy and reviewed compatibility issues. The PC is only 3 years old. W.8.1 was running fine after a complete reinstallation 14 days ago. I do no longer trust in the help of MS! Any time, I contacted them for help, they go on after a certain scheme, and they would not listen what I have to say. In the cases, where I contacted them, I found a solution after painful searching etc., and then solved it myself!!

    • in reply to: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro FAILED #1517801

I tried the suggested solution by BruceR. It does NOT work in my case. I have now three(!!!) failed installations!!!
MS promised a smooth transition for everyone to W10. From what I see now, this is not the case. Many do have a problem with the installation and the resulting code 80240020.
Is MS failing its users again? Are we back to the times of Mr. Balmer? Mr. Nadella, you are responsible for the whole company of MS and its products. So make sure that promises are kept, and that EVERYONE, gets a smooth upgrade. I mean everyone who has the right to upgrade and has a prepared PC, laptop etc.

    • in reply to: Windows 10 Upgrade. #1515606

I have the solution! Here is a link:

      http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/i-receive-the-error-the-default-transaction/d5c78d99-0b4d-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

That command resolved my issue completely. I had already started the reinstallation but Windows Update still refused to install the component. After proceeding with the advice above, all worked well.
      The system now runs flawlessly.

    • in reply to: Windows 10 Upgrade. #1514869

Reset winsock, and delete SW distr., no success.

      I have this W 8.1 Pro ISO file but all attempts to install W 81. again failed;

      1) The ISO file was put on a bootable USB stick. Shutdown PC, started it to start inst., does not work because the drive is locked as it says, pretty stupid!!!!

      2) Next, started the PC normally, plugged the USB stick and started the set.exe. Did not work either. It gives the choices to install W 8.1 Pro (have it installed) w/o changing seetings and personal files, chose that one. Result: NOTHING, all still the same.

      So that alternative is out!!

I have to install from W 8, then get all W 8 updates installed, then get the W8.1 update installed and then all successive updates. This is what I wanted to avoid. Howver, some weeks ago I did it with my laptop and it worked perfectly.

    • in reply to: Windows 10 Upgrade. #1514862

      Both Services start automatically.

Windowsclub link did not help. The other link I know and tried it w/o success two weeks ago.

I have a new option, but have to try it first before I can say anything.

    • in reply to: Windows 10 Upgrade. #1514754

The other source I mentioned came to the conclusion that the whole thing is corrupt, and it is getting worse and worse. Consequently, I should build the system from scratch to have a clean system when the upgrade to W 10 arrives. I tried to avoid this but I think, it helps to install a really clean upgrade which I want. Unfortunately, MS announced a ISO file for W 10, but did not say when and how and other details. When it comes out I will download it and keep it as a fallback just in case.

By the way, the website above is known to me. Had tried it and it does not work.

    • in reply to: Windows 10 Upgrade. #1514646

The update fails with either of these two error codes 8007A91 and 800F0922. As usual, MS cannot provide a clear answer why the codes occur or what the reason behind it is. Maybe they can but the explanation is buried somewhere deep in the system.

      What is BITS???
