I’m envious, but where I live (Europe, not the US) I don’t think I’d be able to function without a phone, especially for handling the now ubiquitous 2FA

It also comes with me whenever I go out of the house, but that’s for emergencies, and to occasionally look up words when my language skills fail me (who knew that Greek would be so hard?)

But, I never go anywhere and just sit there idly scrolling through stuff. It holds absolutely zero attraction. I’d rather sit outside in the sunshine and have a beer and watch the world go by

There’s an interesting BBC article (here) about how people are looking to jump off the smartphone bandwagon and go back to “dumber” phones. They still want some form of communication device, but maybe they’ve started to realise that what they have now is all smoke and mirrors, seedy little spivs following us around trying desperately to sell us stuff that we don’t want. Almost the very definition of the modern world

In today’s world, more and more I feel like I alone am the only one I trust with my data.

      Whom is correct.

Your assertion would carry more weight if it was taken from a recognised source of grammatical information (such as Merriam-Webster) rather then “Strategies for Parents”

You should never use “whom” unless you’re 100% confident that you’re using it correctly. Here it simply sounds pretentious (and wrong)

“Who can you trust with your data?” would have been just fine

    • It is almost impossible to dodge WhatsApp.

I’ve managed to dodge it quite successfully

Like almost everybody else out here I use Viber. It’s not perfect (particularly its privacy policy) but at least it isn’t owned by Meta or any of the other big data-suckers

    • Another good reason (if anybody needed one) not to use any of these apps

    • For anybody following this scandalous story, there’s an ITV interview with two of the forensic accountants who helped uncover the truth, despite attempted harrassment and intimidation by the Post Office (who had called them in ostensibly to look into the affair). It’s a chilling tale of a large corporation completely out of control, and can be found on YouTube: here

Firefox only reports 36 for me

      Can you list them ?

Not sure if I’ve done this correctly (Ctrl+Shift+I, and then selecting “Storage” Tab), because it only shows details for around 20, but anyway, these are the results I get from Firefox:

Or not bother because MS has it recorded and you have an image backup or two for recovery!

      cheers, Paul

What I found interesting was that the first two methods returned the key that I was expecting to see. But the key stored in the Registry was something completely different

I wonder which one MS has recorded?

    • in reply to: What is YouTube/(Google) up to? #2678096

Can I add a new one to my own list, because it’s just come up for the first time today:

      5) I’m able to watch the clip, but there’s a small sponsored advert in the top right of the browser (i.e. not overlaying the clip)

It’s fairly unobtrusive and not personally targetted (except, it’s for something called “The Holy Bag”, which happens to be from a Greek company). I’d actually be happy with something like that going forward. It’s not NO ads, but it’s not in-your-face ads either

    • in reply to: What is YouTube/(Google) up to? #2678042

I lost patience with YouTube a while back, and stopped using it regularly (full story here (AW Link))

However, occasionally people will email me a link to a clip, and I regularly use the Unity Asset Store where most entries have clip(s) associated with the products, so I still come into contact with it one way or the other

I’ve not encountered the precise behaviour that you’ve described, but I’ve seen the following in the last month or so (while using ABP as my ad-blocker):

      1. A clip will be preceded by a short, unrelated, almost subliminal flash of written material (in Greek, because that’s where I live)
      2. I’ll see absolutely nothing, just a black screen, in which case I usually have to restart my browser to try again
      3. I’ll get the “You are using an ad-blocker. You are evil” message, and won’t be able to play the clip
      4. The clip will play normally. It may, or may not, be accompanied by an exhortation to buy their “Premium (Pay us money for the privilege of not watching adverts)” service

Some days I’ll get one or more of the above, but I’ve just checked today and I’m currently getting 4). So, yeah, definitely something going on…

    • He may well be right that the issue has been over-inflated, but all of the sources that Paul Thurrock is quoting in support of his assertion that it’s “not a privacy concern” are from Microsoft themselves

For some reason that doesn’t fill me full of confidence

DDG’s currently acknowledging that they’ve got a problem

It suggests using “bangs” for searching for the time being (e.g. !w to use Wikipedia, etc)

Zen Koan: When your Search Engine stops working, how do you search for an answer to the question “Why has my Search Engine stopped working?”

I’ve used DDG pretty much from when they first appeared on the scene. I use it on the pc with Firefox, and on my mobile

I’d rather tear out my own fingernails than use Google
