AskWoody LoungerThat’s how it was “fixed.”
Apparently misread what the “three clicks” and “fixed” applied to…

OldGuyForum
AskWoody LoungerJust to encourage anybody else who is putting it off: three clicks, less than three minutes, and kb4034441 was ‘fixed’! Simples!
It’s simple if your Recovery partition does not need to be resized… -

AskWoody LoungeriPhones don’t use Android!
@alex5723 is likely implying that iPhones don’t have the issue, since the reply was to “If at all possible, don’t do any banking from a smartphone“. -

The trace made it to the end-point (smtp.gmail.com).
It could have something to do with Google’s “Less Secure Apps” policy…
What Are “Less Secure Apps” and Why is My Gmail Not Working?

AskWoody LoungerOpen a Command prompt and run (copy and paste) the following…
tracert smtp.gmail.com
Note: It is normal to see “Request timed out” along the route.
We’re looking to see if it happens at the endpoint.

AskWoody LoungerYou might try the free Haselo Backup Suite.
I use it for folder and file backups, and Image for Windows/Linux for full drive images.
You might try optimizing your SSD drives, and defragging your HDD drives occasionally.
That can be set up on a schedule in Defragment and Optimize Drives.
If you’re backing up to a USB drive connected to a USB 2.0 port, you’ll transfer at that speed.

AskWoody LoungerMay 7, 2024 at 4:49 pm in reply to: Microsoft could have made the winre file smaller on the Recovery partition. #2669254as it’s NOT that simple by Microsoft’s own standards
Microsoft apparently can do “NOT that simple”…(Windows, .NET, SQL Server, Azure, et. al.)
They should be able to figure out how to fix a defect without causing users to change their partition size.

AskWoody LoungerMay 7, 2024 at 4:42 pm in reply to: Microsoft could have made the winre file smaller on the Recovery partition. #2669253Nope. WinRE.wim is the file that gets mounted as a virtual drive. That is what allows WinRE to work on the OS drive, because it’s doing it from the virtual drive in RAM, not the HDD or SSD. Boot.sdi does the mounting and assigns drive letter X:

AskWoody LoungerMay 7, 2024 at 1:58 am in reply to: How to prevent Windows 11 from encrypting your disks during installation #2668547Looks like the Deskmodder article references Windows 11 24H2, which is still an Insider Preview.
Features come and go before release, so it may be a little early to pull the fire alarm.

AskWoody Loungerdon’t understand what i’m supposed to be looking for.
We’re looking in the Event logs to see if any errors or warnings are being logged when the issue happens.
Easiest way to do that is to try
double clicking existing docx and xlsx files
If it fails, note the time that it happened.
Open the custom view, and sort the entries by Date and Time, newest to oldest.
Look for an entry or entries in the time frame you noted.
