Eric, does it depend on which machine boots first? I suspect some sort of machine / network conflict to explain the reversal behaviour.

Mount points are standard Windows fare and work as a normal share. The lack of posts with fixes probably indicates bot a lack of shares with mount points and a lack of problems.

Grounding yourself to protect against static does not work if the computer is not also grounded. The best method is to hold onto a metal part on the outside of your computer before putting anything inside the computer. This makes you and the computer the same voltage and touching anything inside the computer will not cause static damage.
To add things to the computer, keep one hand on the computer and reach for an outside metal part of the component. If it’s memory, leave it in it’s anti static bag until you have it inside the computer.

Routers do not need NetBIOS, nor does W7. It’s a legacy protocol and can be safely removed.

It may be a problem with having more than 1GB of memory, not the memory itself. You can test it by installing the program on a computer with more RAM, or trying different memory.

Welcome to one of the joys of modern technological change, old stuff doesn’t support new stuff.
The limitation is in the Dell BIOS and there is nothing you can do to be able to “see” all 320 GB.

I suggest you install the new disk and set it up as the largest drive you can given the BIOS in the machine. You will waste some space but it’s better than nothing.

WD provide a copy of Acronis for drive duplication.

To access a network share you need to logon to the share with a user/pass that is defined on the machine with the share.

Do you use the same user/pass to logon to both machines?

    • in reply to: Two routers – one wired – one wireless #1193234

      I see 2 options.
      1. Replace the BEFSR router with the WRTG router. This is the easiest.
      2. Set a hard coded IP address and turn off DHCP server on the WRTG router, then connect it to the BEFSR router via the switch ports, not the WAN port. This is much harder.

I don’t have NetBIOS on my workgroup computers and can happily browse the other computers in Explorer. Seems like you have a more fundamental problem.

The problem seems to be with Red as it cannot see itself in the workgroup, but I don’t understand how you are able to map drives if the network isn’t working?
Do you need to have the workgroup show up given the network seems to be OK?

You can also use TreeSize Free to see what directories are consuming the most space.

You can delete all directories under Windows called $NTUninstall. These contain the leftovers from updates and are not required unless you want to un-install the update.
You must keep the directory windowsServicePackFiles because this contains the files needed for system file replacement.

If they have been wiped recovery wont recover the data. If you are worried recover them, then wipe them again.

Most of the drive manufacturers provide free cloning software that can be used if the new drive is by that manufacturer. (Seagate/Maxtor have DiskWizard.)

Windows or programs often asks your disks what they are up to. Not an issue you need to worry about.
