Once the shortcut is created with the default browser logo icon, right click on the icon.  In Brave and Edge then click on Properties.  Then click Change Icon.  That will bring up a choice of icons from the browser’s icon file.  You may have to browse around to other dll files, or to an ico file, to get an icon you like.

    • in reply to: So how’s your battery? #2705430

One annoying thing I had to deal with when it comes to batteries was different size/model batteries all marketed as the ones needed for a single model of Lenovo Thinkpad.

Around 2012 I bought a Lenovo E130. It was small and suitable for all my business trips in those days. After a few years the battery refused to hold a charge. I ordered a replacement battery marketed by several vendors as appropriate for a Lenovo E130. Except that when it arrived it didn’t fit.

I had bought the laptop in Hong Kong, where I lived at the time. I ordered the replacement battery from London, where I was then living. The replacement was shipped from China, and the vendor accepted a return. A few months later I saw different vendor selling a battery (different model number) for the Lenovo E130. I tried again, and again it did not fit.

Apparently Lenovo used different size/model batteries in its E130s sold in different markets around the world.

I’d certainly classify that as a battery annoyance.

    • If setup was successful, I think drcard:))’s suggestion of run > shell:appsfolder should work.

Another place to look, if setup was successful:
      C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\

      Look in there for:
      WINWORD.EXE
      POWERPNT.EXE
      EXCEL.EXE
      Etc.

In Word go to File>Options>Advanced>Editing options> and de-select “Mark formatting inconsistencies” and “Keep track of formatting”.

      https://softwarekeep.com/blogs/news/what-are-the-windows-10-n-and-kn-editions

Above is a pretty good discussion of Windows 10 N.  Explains why Microsoft issued 10 N after running afoul of European competition laws (and similarly for Windows 10 KN in Korea).   The section headed “What do users lose in Windows N and KN editions” provides some of the precautions you ask about.

If your choice is between full Windows 10 and Windows 10 N, I’m not sure I’d call 10 N an “upgrade”.  It’s more like Windows 10 minus some media applications and functionality.  Several articles I’ve read say that not only are some applications (like Media Player) missing, but also some third-party media-related apps won’t run under Windows 10 N.

Thanks, Alex.  I don’t recall ever installing those extensions, but it’s possible.

I also use XNViewMP – another great image manager similar to FSViewer.  It too opens HEIC files.  The XNView website lists HEIC as a supported graphics format, with no mention of needing extensions.

I use FastStone with .webp files often.  Just open the .webp file in FastStone then save as .jpg.

Since I haven’t gotten an .heic file in years, I went to this site and downloaded one:

      https://filesamples.com/formats/heic

It opened immediately in FastStone.  Then save as .jpg.

FastStone Image Viewer will open HEIC and save to many common image formats.

I am posting this in hope that it helps someone else having the same problem I had – and resolved – with Intel’s Driver & Support Assistant (DSA) refusing to open in Brave browser.

I have used Brave for several years for privacy protection reasons. My computer (Dell XPS17) has an 11th Gen Intel i7-11800H processor. I keep Intel drivers up to date using Intel DSA whenever Intel notifies me by email that a new driver has been released. DSA scans your installed drivers and returns results in your default browser.

Recently, when I try to run a DSA scan, I started getting the error message: “sorry something went wrong while trying to scan”. Reinstalling DSA and clearing the browser cache did not help.

Intel’s online troubleshooter had this comment:

“ensuring the browser being used is Firefox, Chrome, or Edge/ Legacy Edge (version 44.17763/18.17763 or newer).”

To now, Brave has handled Intel DSA without problems. I do have both Edge and Chrome Portable installed as backup browsers. I just tried Intel DSA in both Edge and Chrome, and it works properly. So, the problem seems to an incompatibility between Brave browser and Intel Driver & Support Assistant.

Further, by default, Brave opens a “privacy protection shield” for each site, but this can be turned off site by site. I just turned off the Brave shield for https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/intel-driver-support-assistant.html
and Intel DSA opens in Brave without the error message.

    • in reply to: Odd mouse behavior with (possible) update. #2676294

      Hi Artie,

Like you, I use Win 11 Home, 23H2, build 22631.3593.

I have had the issue you raise (mouse wheel doesn’t scroll until you first click on the scross bar) only on the All Apps page of the start menu. I’m pretty sure it’s been that way long before the latest Windows update.

But I do not seem to have that problem in other Windows apps like File Explorer or Settings. File Explorer has two side-by-side windows. The mouse wheel scrolls only the one with “focus”.

Have you checked a few of the Settings windows that are longer than a screen-full? For example, System or Privacy & Security or Apps>Installed Apps? Does you mouse wheel scroll those Windows apps?
