I see. I just checked and saw that on my v1809 Pro system there were no updates, so it is apparently only for Enterprise/education.

Besides Office 2010 updates it is also noteworthy that Win10 v1809 received an update. Originally EOL for v1809 was planned for May 2020, but because of the pandemic this has been extended to November 2020. But this month an update was released for v1809, after the official EOL.

      Dear Woody,

I’m late with responding because of some health issues that I have myself, but I still want to respond. Thank you for all you have done. I have discovered this website a couple of years ago when MS started to mess up the updates. First I read the articles in (then) InfoWorld and then I discovered AskWoody.

I appreciate all your efforts, to mention just a few: the MS-DEFCON system and bringing this website to a higher level. It has saved me from quite some problems!

As someone who knows how difficult it can be struggling with health issues I wish you all the best with your health. Above all I hope that your ventures outside of IT will bring you happiness. Even though I am not an IT professional, nowadays it just takes too much time IMO to manage everything, particularly because MS cannot be relied upon anumore as I could many years ago. I really understand your desire to do others things than IT.

I wish you a good retirement Woody! Thanks again for everything!

The same thing happened with Office 2007. I recall that for about 3 or maybe even 4 months after end of support Office 2007 updates were released. I do not know why, I was surprised at the time too, especially because they were released for several months after end of support and not just one. That was the reason why I was not too much surprised to see Office 2010 updates being released today. In fact I am glad, because I am still working on upgrading Office 2010 to a newer version, but had a couple of big non-IT roadblocks on my way, so these October patches take away a little bit of time pressure. Otherwise I would just have pushed through an upgrade within a week or so.

    • I also did not get the CU & SSU for v1809 offered via WU. It started with the July updates, until June they were offered via WU. I recall that you mentioned the same issue since July. Like you I installed the updates manually. But it is strange that these updates are not offered via WU anymore.

    • Thanks for your reply. I have indeed Group Policy “Configure automatic updates” on Enabled, value 2 (notify download/install). I have just set the feature updates deferral on 30 days to avoid v2004 but try to get and see v1909 in the update queue. After I clicked Check for updates v1909 started downloading automatically, so I broke that off and restored an image that I made just before I did that. Hopefully tomorrow v1909 will just appear and not install so that I can use wushowhide.

I already tried upgrading to v1909 about a month ago, but reverted back to v1809, because v1909 introduces a new update task in task scheduler that wakes the computer to check for updates (something with Update Orchestrator). Because the PC should not wake up by itself at unwanted times (I have it in my bedroom) and because I also cannot disable wake timers (I need that for a program that does need to wake up the computer) I need to find a good solution to disable the update orchestrator task. I have found a script/task somebody wrote, but I need the time to sort this out when I upgrade to v1909. That is why I want to stay at v1809 at this moment.

    • Woody said in his ComputerWorld article about blocking v2004 that preventing an upgrade from v1809 would be pretty easy by selecting Semi-annual channel and 365 days for feature update deferrals. Apparently, this is not anymore the case next week. Is there any way to stay on v1809 longer? How do I prevent an update to v1903/1909?

Then my wow remains but then for another reason: that is has not been solved yet. How difficult would it be to check for pending updates and if so do a shutdown without Fast Startup?

    • in reply to: Where we stand with the May 2020 patches #2267224

Wow, Fast Startup has been around for how may years? At least 5 I think. And only now did they find out that it caused Windows Updates to not be fully installed. Just wow…..

    • You can still order from them (I asked the same question a couple of months ago).

    • I think Anotherwindowsuser means for free and also for non-businesses (Home version). I agree with that. It would be the right thing for MS to do during this pandemic , where people have other things to take care of than moving to Windows 10 or just had to revive old Windows 7 machines to be able to work from home.

“Bottom line don’t forget to update your backup software as well as your operating system. ….. and read those release notes.”

Yes, and Macrium is very good at fixing bugs, even if only a few people have them. I have been working with Macrium support many times to solve issues, and even the smallest issues they generally solve quickly.

    • Just out of curiosity: why? My reason for asking: I have seen other contributors on AskWoody claiming this is illegal.

I myself take a practical approach: I have lost so very many hours (> 100) because of Microsoft’s absence of client focus that I honestly do not care whether it is illegal (normally I do). One example: only informing that Ultimate is also covered by ESU in late November which caused me much stress trying to get my systems on Windows 10 in the months before November 2019, which failed, because of a lack of time and energy on my part caused by insufficient health.

I have a machine without ESU but with Office 2010. On that machine Windows Update does show the Office updates.
