Using Firefox without Containers, I have “Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed” selected. I also have multiple sites listed in Manage Exceptions, so that they don’t challenge me every time I want to log in. Of course, I have to use a regular (non-Private) window for those.

You have to enter the sites manually by typing in their URLs. To figure out what to type, click Manage Data while you are logged in to the site you want to add.

I’m quite sure there is a similar set up possible in Chrome and Edge.

Did you download and install anything that day? Maybe it came bundled with something else you (thought you) wanted.

      Additionally:
Do you have any form of ad- or script blocking? If not, I would at minimum recommend setting the browser to ask you where to save every download. That way, an unexpected download will be interrupted by the ask, giving you the chance to recognize that you didn’t initiate it and cancel it.

      For example, in my Firefox:
      Firefox_ask

Chrome has a similar setting, so all the other flavors of it should, as well.

If what you removed via Software Manager or the launcher menu right-click method is something that was installed from Flatpak, you can also fire up a Terminal window and run this to potentially get some drive space back:

      flatpak uninstall --unused

Not required. Often there won’t be anything unused to remove, especially if you have multiple programs installed from Flatpak.

    • Within Outlook, go to File > Options > Advanced, and look under File and browser preferences to find Open hyperlinks from Outlook in. This defaults to Microsoft Edge, but can be changed to Default Browser. On my work PC, I did this about 8 seconds after I got the update with this “feature”, and it hasn’t changed itself back.

    • in reply to: “copy link without site tracking” #2637499

I suppose @DrBonzo is referring to plain old private browsing or options like ‘Send websites a “Do Not Track” request’ or ‘Tell websites not to sell or share my data’. I have no doubt there are many sites that don’t honor those settings. But until I have proof that absolutely 100% of sites don’t honor them, I’ll keep them turned on. If nothing else, I feel like I’m showing my appreciation to good site devs who chose (and were allowed by higher ups) to design theirs correctly. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Meanwhile, I see Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection in Strict mode blocking something on almost every site I visit (except AskWoody) – the shield in the address bar turns purple and can be clicked to find out what trackers are present and which were blocked and which were allowed. I rarely find a site has been broken by this – Mozilla seems to be trying to provide as much privacy as possible without harming functionality.

But, back on topic: I’ve tried ‘Copy Link Without Site Tracking’ when I saw a link with appended parameters and I couldn’t work out what they’re for. So far, I haven’t yet noticed it remove anything from the URL. Perhaps all that means is that those parameters weren’t considered to be trackers.

Here’s a little experiment. I searched for a product on Amazon, and once on the product page I copied the URL from the address bar:

      https://www.amazon.com/Mr-IRONSTONE-Firewood-Adjustable-Accessories/dp/B09B3FSMDT/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1Q3L8K6UJC4YS&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.A_mTDBRw88UzYzj7AnKXNsmypFwcEKWu_354rn8WOOn9xkOi0KeGv81SfTvlTic7JPsEf1qBrzb5gPz7EQXaE-9pPcuiDdGyxczkxUk19SvuojMTG3_qiRCkcMSDU-7qiXPh1apMyg5gBS3ieI6sw0fhZ6uzR2XhjEJ9tK97rSA8h-lFJrn9B6XX-TZa0Q_JcDO4c56DKzmlrncGHwARngbDZ7lk0XQPzpygKJ1K02iCwUR4dKuwL8qsqVDuleOZ8wnmWPkzuTHtqKeGCRB-2TK4Ij0KeDuLL3Gv4VGFMnA.87xAsUVAFlVawt_aar7finUfx3-uGMDfgvHYUtFobhY&dib_tag=se&keywords=firewood+bracket&qid=1707915339&sprefix=firewood+bracket,aps,85&sr=8-3-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1

Then I right-clicked it and chose ‘Copy Without Site Tracking’:

      https://www.amazon.com/Mr-IRONSTONE-Firewood-Adjustable-Accessories/dp/B09B3FSMDT/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1Q3L8K6UJC4YS&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.A_mTDBRw88UzYzj7AnKXNsmypFwcEKWu_354rn8WOOn9xkOi0KeGv81SfTvlTic7JPsEf1qBrzb5gPz7EQXaE-9pPcuiDdGyxczkxUk19SvuojMTG3_qiRCkcMSDU-7qiXPh1apMyg5gBS3ieI6sw0fhZ6uzR2XhjEJ9tK97rSA8h-lFJrn9B6XX-TZa0Q_JcDO4c56DKzmlrncGHwARngbDZ7lk0XQPzpygKJ1K02iCwUR4dKuwL8qsqVDuleOZ8wnmWPkzuTHtqKeGCRB-2TK4Ij0KeDuLL3Gv4VGFMnA.87xAsUVAFlVawt_aar7finUfx3-uGMDfgvHYUtFobhY&dib_tag=se&qid=1707915339&sprefix=firewood+bracket,aps,85&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1

As you can see, very little was removed. Just these two:

      &keywords=firewood+bracket
      &sr=8-3-spons

Meanwhile, here’s all you really need to open the same product page:

      https://www.amazon.com/Mr-IRONSTONE-Firewood-Adjustable-Accessories/dp/B09B3FSMDT/

Maybe the rest aren’t tracking parameters. Maybe some are and the feature will get better with time. (It’s only been around for a few months – see release notes.) Maybe Mozilla are playing it very conservative. Maybe all of these.

    • in reply to: Adding askwoody.com to my search engines #2637400

I suppose someone knowledgeable would have to create and submit a search plugin.

Personally, I don’t bother with site-specific search plugins. Instead I often use a DuckDuckGo !Bang. If there isn’t one for the site I’m interested in, then in DuckDuckGo I use the “old school” site search method:

      search term site:www.askwoody.com

Also, I found that there wasn’t currently a bang for AskWoody, so I suggested
!askwoody to them. Hopefully they’ll add it.

    • in reply to: HP Office Jet 3830 ink cartridge #2637396

Pull the cartridge out and look for shmoo on the electrical contacts. Might be dried ink, fingerprints, tape residue, etc. If so, clean it (gently) and reinstall to try again.

Another thing I’ve read in the past is that some printers don’t like mixing regular and high capacity cartridges. If your color is regular capacity, you might try pulling it and installing only the black XL to see if it will work (assuming the printer has a single-cartridge print mode).

    • Alert: snark detected. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Really, it makes sense to do this now, in light of what the EU has been doing for user choice. It basically spells out what to focus on for user choice of browser, so that the EU’s people don’t have to go digging for it themselves.

      • Will addressing those issues help Mozilla? Yes.
      • Will that also help any other third party browser? Yes.
      • Will that also make first party browsers less hated by some? I daresay yes, as well.

To expand on that last point: We’ve all met the user who stubbornly avoids and perhaps actively removes what is trying to force itself on them. Some of us are that user. But when this stops, and additionally when third party browsers are no longer prevented from having all of the same basic features, first party browsers won’t be a thorn to be removed. They’ll be a viable choice depending on user preferences.

      Win-win-win. IMHO.

    • Despite this thread being marked as Resolved, I feel I just have to chime in. I think Logitech may have gone just a bit too cheap on the middle button for the M510.

I use the M510 daily on my company-issued Windows 10 work notebook, and have for years. For several of those the middle click worked flawlessly, but eventually I started getting the same unreliable behavior as the OP. I don’t have to press forcefully to get it to work, but at just the right angle.

I never though it was OS-related, so I just tested it on my home Linux Mint desktop, and the behavior didn’t change.

For work, I was an extremely heavy user of that function, so I assume I’ve worn it out. I’ve since optimized my workflow a bit so as to not need it much, and now just occasionally use Ctrl+click since my left hand is always on the keyboard anyway. I probably won’t replace the M510 unless I wear out left- or right-click, and then I’ll go right back to abusing middle click.

For personal use of other PCs, I’m still a heavy user of middle click. Those machines have other Logitech models, some of which are older than the M510 with no loss of function. My favorite is the G400s, which I consider to be the perfect size and shape for a mouse, matching the original version of the MX500 and many other models over the years.

    • This is why my phone is used only as a phone. Calls, texting, that’s it. No access to money, password manager, or any of my accounts. The device itself isn’t even worth stealing. The same will be true of my next phone, once the current one no longer receives security updates.

Convenience is the opposite of security.
