    • As mentioned in the Reddit thread, it’s possible that someone was trying to reset your password. My guess about the different languages is probably what local Yahoo site they attempted the login from.

I had one a few years ago with my Google account. It previously was used for Gmail but I deactivated that in favour of an Outlook.com account. I was getting a lot of Indonesian spam to the Gmail before deactivating it, but you can never fully delete the Gmail and it’s always tied to the Google account even if you change the primary address. Then someone in Indonesia tried to reset my Google account password by using the deactivated Gmail address, after which I deleted the entire Google account and set up a new one with my Outlook.com account.

    • If I recall, “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” allows you to receive “dribbled” features more quickly. But you won’t get updates before their release date, as you would on the Release Preview channel.

Your machine is trying to boot from a network rather than the hard drive. It could be for a number of reasons, such as operating system corruption or a failed hard drive or SSD.

    • in reply to: November 2024 updates out #2716980

[Task Manager (known issue)] Fixed: The count for the number of groups is wrong or always zero (0) on the Processes tab. This occurs when you turn on “Group by type.”

I noticed this one on Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session 23H2, which uses the Windows 8/10-style Task Manager instead of the new one. All of the process groups (Apps, Background processes etc) showed zero regardless of the number of processes. You can also replicate this on regular Windows 11 by running the 32-bit taskmgr.exe from SysWOW64.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Google buys out anyone who becomes a real threat to them

I wouldn’t be surprised if the court will break Google into : Android, Google Play, Search, Ads..

      https://edition.cnn.com/2024/08/05/business/google-loses-antitrust-lawsuit-doj/index.html

I’d hope so but aren’t so optimistic about it. I can’t really say why without going into politics so I’ll just leave it there!

I can’t say that I share the same enthusiasm about Google being dethroned like Lycos and AltaVista were. They were different times and much smaller companies. I wouldn’t be surprised if Google buys out anyone who becomes a real threat to them. That has already been happening with the likes of Facebook buying Instagram, and Match.com hoovering up its competitors like Tinder and POF.

    • in reply to: How do you make Windows 11 more like… #2716487

I still know lots more about Windows.  And I can’t remember which app, but there was an app I use that wouldn’t run under Wine.  I’ll have to test again and see which one.

If you find any that don’t work, please add a bug (for each app) to WINE. When I have time, I’ll update WINE to support them.

Note: Many Windows apps are not pure Win32 and in that case you need to run the installer for the required version of Microsoft Common Language Runtime (CLR) in WINE *before* running the installer/software you want to use. (Some App installers are smart enough to check that CLR req is installed/ install it as a prerequisite, but many installers just blindly assume it’s installed since it typically is on Win xyz)

I’ve also used Windows for just over 30 years… but my patience began wearing thin with the introduction of Win8 and things have only gotten worse with Recall, Copilot, …

If you understand Windows, you can definitely master Linux

I’ve tried, but I just can’t. I’ve been using Windows since 1997 and know the ins and outs of it well. I can’t say that for Linux. And some of the design choices like the case-sensitive file system drive me nuts! I know that these are Unix legacies but it’s not the 1970s anymore and its advocates defend them to the hilt.

Windows 11 24H2 isn’t supported on any Core 2 CPU and there’s no workaround.

    • in reply to: Server 2025 auto upgrade? #2714991

My colleague also came across this worrying Reddit thread where some 2022 servers had automatically upgraded to 2025:
      https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1gk2qdu/windows_2022_servers_unexpectedly_upgrading_to/

I wonder is this just an Azure thing or is this across the board?

      Looks like a Heimdal thing?

Even if that is the case, this is still a big change.

Server versions up to now have been LTSC releases and didn’t receive upgrades through Windows Update. It seems that they now do. That top screenshot is my own and we don’t use Heimdal. I’ve had to downgrade servers to older Windows Server versions in the past to support third-party applications that didn’t support the current version, this could be a big concern if the version can be upgraded easily via Windows Update or (potentially) automatically.

    • Rufus Isn’t even the original source for the bypass 🙂

Why is that relevant? I’ve seen a lot of hate for Rufus online and could never understand why.

    • in reply to: How can I restore functionality of notepad.exe on Win11? #2708877

Go to App execution aliases in settings (you can search for it from Start). Deselect Notepad, this will allow the old Notepad to open.

You’ll also need to edit the registry at:

      HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\notepad.exe

Remove the “NoOpenWith” setting to allow you to associate files with it.

    • in reply to: Server 2025 prompting to “back up” #2707142

Others have complained that when the full gui is installed all the full annoyances come along with it.  Let me see if this is in the final/or planned to be pulled out.

Believe me, I would *love* to use Server Core more frequently. But it’s never my decision to make unfortunately.

I still use iTunes for taking backups but I always do my updates OTA. Never had any issues.

    • I’ve long suspected that parts of Windows have become so complicated that even Microsoft can’t fix them. This does nothing to quell that suspicion!

    • in reply to: Windows 11 24H2 release date #2704942

The article that Martin sourced has been edited to state that it’s not related to 24H2.

Editor’s note 9.18.2024 – The dates conveyed below are for our regular monthly servicing updates for supported versions of Windows 11 and unrelated to when Windows 11, version 24H2 will be generally available.
