AskWoody LoungerIs there no .NET update for Windows 10 this month?
-
technic
AskWoody LoungerI was wrong, C:\Windows\Temp\MUBSTemp\BingChatInstaller.EXE is still there, but it requires admin rights.

AskWoody LoungerI did the update for my Win10 PC. Then I opened Chrome, used it and closed it. Suddenly a popup in the bottom-right corner of the screen. It was asking if I want to change the search engine in Chrome to GPT-4. I panicked a little bit. I opened task manager. The process was something like BingInstaller or something. It was signed by Microsoft. I was releived. I clicked “No, thanks”. The executable seems gone from my drive. LOL

AskWoody LoungerDecember 24, 2023 at 5:51 am in reply to: Remove or modify Microsoft/Outlook account security question? #2614705My Windows account is a local account and I’m not talking about that.
I’m asking about my personal Outlook account. It never asked for the security answer, but I just wanted to make sure it’s gone. I think you’ve answered my question, thanks.

AskWoody LoungerYes, web browsers write several gigabytes per day if you use it all day, or even, to some extent, if you just leave the browser open all day. Everything (html, css, js, images, even video) is written to disk. In addition, periodic session store and SafeBrowsing updates can add up to gigabytes per day.
My 64 GB SSD was finished after 10 years of everyday browser usage. But a larger SSD will last longer.
SSD endurance also depends on the memory type, SLC, MLC or TLC.
Nevertheless, I’d recommend that you just get the most out of your SSD, enjoy it’s speed, and just replace it when the time comes.

technic
AskWoody Loungerbecause your SSD is 2TB!!! the more free space, the longer it lasts.

Same for the latest stable SumatraPDF.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 15, 2023 at 1:57 pm in reply to: Critical WebP bug: many apps, not just browsers, under threat #2587617It seems to be part of Media Foundation and/or WIC (Windows Imaging Component), though the support for WebP is rather undocumented.
If it’s a wrapper for the open source library, it could have the same vulnerability. However, the file size looks too small to be a full WebP implementation.
There’s also MSWebp_store.dll.
