    • in reply to: Removing old desktop icon #1176943

Hey guys, May I ask for your expertise on this minor matter? This morning I updated my Firefox browser to
      the new 3.5.3.
On my Admin. account all is okay, however, on my limited user account I’m stumped. After the installation for
the limited account was completed, it placed a new (second) launch icon on the desktop as well as leaving the old one
      remaining on the desktop.
Since only one is required ( the new one), how can I remove the old one? Obviously this cannot be done in the limited
account but has to be in the admin. account.
While in the admin. account, I went into the desktop folder for the limited account to remove the (old or not anymore
needed icon) it’s only showing one present ( the new one).
So, long story short, how can the old, not needed icon be removed from the limited account desktop?

When this happens to me (reasonably often) all I do is just right click on the old (non required) desktop icon and select delete – you are only deleting the shortcut, nothing else. Would this work in your limited account?

    • in reply to: Kaspersky Anti Virus 2010 #1175094

Hello Ron. Correct me if i am wrong, but doesn’t”Kaspersky” emanate from Russia?( good luck with that) Wouldn’t trust that as far as i could “boot” it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaspersky_Lab. Regards

I don’t use it, having stayed with Norton (currently NIS 2009) for the past four years (it’s never let me down, so why change?). But for what it is worth, I note that Barclays (UK) banking group promotes Kaspersky routinely for the security of its internet banking customers. Now there’s a starter for conspiracy theories – if anyone ever needed one!!!

The venerable and still popular version is available at Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition – Reviews and free Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition downloads at Download.com.

Lavasoft has a page comparing performance of its product and several others at Performance Comparison – Lavasoft.

      Thanks Joe,

Don’t use it as often as I used to but it’s still a useful program to have.

My friend sent me a folder via E-mail to a program we both have and my computer which has adobe says it cannot open the folder. So I am at a lose as to what to do. Do I need to download word on my computer?

Not sure I fully understand your problem but, if you think you need Microsoft Word to open whatever has been sent to you then you don’t necessarily have to buy/obtain the whole Word package. You can download something called ‘Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003’ which you can obtain, free, from the Microsoft download centre. This will allow you to read Word formatted documents (.doc) and many other formats, but will not allow you to edit them.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgable than me will see your query and respond with a far better answer.

    • in reply to: New version of SIW released #1152470

      Keith,
I had the same experience this morning. I think Norton’s warning is a false positive, but the solution is simple. If your previous version of SIW was residing in a Program Files folder, it’s likely that you had installed SIW previously, rather than simply running it from the siw.exe file. If that’s the case, uninstall SIW. If your previous version had not been installed, then simply delete the old siw.exe file. Then go to to the SIW site, and click on the Download link above the Standalone English Version. This will simply download the siw.exe file and you can then place a shortcut to it on your desktop.

If you download the Mulitlanguage version, you will be downloading the file which can then be used to install SIW.

John – your solution worked fine, I’m now up and running with 17.3.2009. Many thanks

A new version of SIW ( System Information for Windows ) in available HERE

It’s a good comprehensive system overview.

      Bob,
Thanks, but I’m having some problems with it. I already have the previous version of SIW so I just opened that, clicked on help and chose the check for updates option. It did its thing, offered me 17.3.2009 and I accepted. Unfortunately, my NIS auto protect function then blocked the download process, saying it is a high security risk – a suspicious HM690A (whatever that is). It also says it’s a heuristic type virus! NIS maintains the block for 30 minutes, so I’m stuck for a while.

Not deterred, I used your link only to find that IE tells me it cannot open the internet site and has aborted the operation!!

I’ll leave it a couple of hours and then turn off my auto protect function and see if I can get it dowloaded. I’d be interested to know if anyone else is having a problem. Pity ’cause it’s a very useful tool to have. I’m assuming here that you’ve already downloaded the updated version without problems?

      Cheers,
      Keith

    • in reply to: Download and Upload Speed Tests #1146736

In fairness, my ISP (Orange) only promised 2.2Mbps. I’ve just run your recommended speedtester, thinkbroadband.com against the one I usually use, which is broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk

      yours – 1499.49 download, 241.79 up
      mine – 1744 download, 240 up

      Hi!
For what it’s worth, my ISP tells me I have a 2.2Mbps broadband link – the reality is, of course, somewhat different and probably relates more to how far away my phone terminal is from the local telephone exchange. It also varies depending on time of day (due, I assume, from amount of users accessing the server, or the exchange?). Currently I’m registering 1752kbps download and just 241Kbps upload. As I’m in a fairly rural location (on the coast of Cumbria UK) I doubt I’d do much better by purchasing a higher broadband rate.

    • in reply to: Physical Memory upgrade – is it possible? #1146150

      Everyone,

Very many thanks for all the inputs/views re dust/fluff extraction

I think we’ve just about tied this thread up now.

      Cheers,

    • in reply to: Physical Memory upgrade – is it possible? #1146006

      Bob, Doc and Hans,

As promised, an update on upgrading my RAM

All went well and I’m now the proud owner of a rejuvenated computer with 1.18GB of physical memory! The addition was immediately recognised when I booted up and, having taken your advice and letting Windows decide on Virtual memory size, the Virtual memory was automatically increased in line with the new amount of RAM.

I only experienced two slight panics!

One when I opened the casing and discovered that there were, in fact, only two memory slots available (one already occupied by the 256MB). Crucial’s scan of my system told me I had three in total with 2 available. Just as well I hadn’t gone for 2 x 1GB cards!

The other slight panic was when I opened the casing and saw the amount of dust and fluff that was sitting inside the case!
I disturbed as little as possible and seem to have got away without any problems.

The whole process took no more than 30 mins, including a number of significant pauses when I saw the missing slot and the dust! All very easy to accomplish and, in fact, the hardest part was working out how to get the side of the case off and to get it back on again (no screws, just slide and clip).

Very many thanks to you all for your pointers and guidance, without which I wouldn’t even have made a start.

One last question if I may: Re the dust and fluff. Should I just forget that it’s there or is there a safe way to clean it all out – I don’t really fancy the idea of poking a vacuum cleaner pipe anywhere near the inside – especially given the possible static discharge issues.

      Thanks,
      Keith

    • in reply to: Physical Memory upgrade – is it possible? #1145390

      Bob/Doc/Hans,

I’ve read up on Doc’s recommended tutorials and the one that’s also available on the Crucial website – and have decided that it ought to be within my capabilities to do the upgrade from 256MB to 1.2GB, so – I’ve just ordered a 1GB card from Crucial (together with an anti-static wrist strap!) and as soon as it comes I’ll give it a shot – will report back on results when done (assuming my computer still functions of course!).

One question if I may – The ‘mysupercomputer’ tutorial indicates that it’s advisable to increase the virtual memory as well, by a factor of x3 – Does that go along with your thinking? And if so, is there any exact amount I should enter – ie, will the computer recognise whatever amount I enter and set, or does it need to have specific values?

Thanks again – your guidance, as ever, much appreciated – especially as (if I get it right) it’s going to save me the price of a new PC!!

      Keith

    • in reply to: Physical Memory upgrade – is it possible? #1145262

      Thanks Joe,

The Crucial website indicated several combinations were possible. As well as the 2 x 1GB option, it indicated I could add 512MB to the existing 256MB to make 768MB, or I could add 1GB to the 256MB to make 1.2GB. From what you say (and I don’t do anything heavy) just adding 1 x 1GB card would seem to be the best (and cheaper) option. Thanks,
      Keith

    • in reply to: Physical Memory upgrade – is it possible? #1145235

      Doc/Bob,
Wow!!! A whole new world has just opened up for me! The website is a real eye-opener Bob! It tells me I have two free slots available and the max memory capacity of my system is 2048MB. I can upgrade to 2GB by removing the already installed 256MB and replacing it with a 1GB plus adding another (identical) 1GB in one of the free slots. The website has identified exactly which products I need to purchase and the UK price.

I’ve also had a quick scan through both tutorials Doc and it seems plausible that I could attempt the upgrade myself. I’ve saved the tutorial pages to my ‘favorites’ and will go through them in much slower time shortly.

Thank you both for the excellent pointers – much appreciated. Once I’ve convinced myself I can accomplish it on my own I’ll give it a go and will post back idc.

      Cheers,
      Keith

      John,
I think Software Information for Windows (SIW) will list them all out for you – There’s a top level option called (would you believe) ‘Licenses’
