      Hi,
Some security programmes automatically turn off the Windows Security Centre as they perform the same function that it does. Thus it prevents you from getting possible conflicting reports. Norton Internet Security is one of them – I know, I have NIS loaded and it automatically turns the SC off by a registry change – (There is an option to have SC on at the same time if I want it, but I don’t bother) – I’m sure the more knowledgeable amongst lounge members will advise you on other security products that do the same – or perhaps give you other explanations. I’m not aware that Spybot S & D turns SC off, as if you run a scan and it finds SC off it will flag that up as a security risk.

    • in reply to: Adaware Update Problem #1094969

      Hi Doc,
I found I needed to upgrade to 2007 version just over a week ago – For whatever reason, every time I checked for v1.06 updates (for well over a week) I kept getting back that there were none! Any chance that they’ve given up on 1.06? or perhaps I just had some unrelated other problem. Anyway, once on 2007 all seems to be running smoothly, but it does takes longer to load and run than the old version.

      Chuck,
With my solitaire a ‘right click’ (once) moves aces and subsequent numbers from the columns to the top boxes – perhaps you’ve got a delux version of the game (or a ‘hands off’ one anyway!!)

Thanks for the tip. I’ll keep an eye out for it – sounds like it might come in useful.

    • in reply to: Works 7 Spreadsheet #1089187

Thanks Rod – Looks like you’ve hit the nail on the head. As soon as I marked a block by clicking on the column header and setting the parameters I wanted, then inserted lines seem to pick up whatever I’d set the column to. Great!

What I was doing wrong before was to go to the row number 1 column entry (rather than the column header), ‘block’ the length of the column that I wanted (shift + down arrow key) and then set the parameters – then, whenever I inserted a row it defaulted to Works 7’s settings. Now I know why!

Really glad to know that there’s someone out there that knows their way around spreadsheets – watch this space, I may be back!!!

If you see Hans, tell him I’ve stopped holding my breath – thankfully!!!

      Your help much appreciated Rod

      Cheers,
      Keith

    • in reply to: Spybot 1.5 issue? #1086219

      Just to close the loop.

Downloaded the S&D patch (1.5.1.16), and replaced the original spybotSD.exe file with the new one and it seems to have done the trick. Loading time now reduced from 2mins to 15 seconds – That’ll keep me happy for a while!

Many thanks for the pointer and on what to do. As always, very grateful for the help and guidance

Thank you. I’ll give it a try. Nice to know that it’s not just me!

      Acer,
I’ve had it turned on on my machine since day 1 – Hasn’t caused me any problems that I’m aware of. I see It as another worthwhile layer of protection.

      Hans/John,
Quick update. Hans, you hit the nail on the head re Spybot S&D. I’ve just downloaded latest updates from S&D and then ran and updated the ‘immunize’ prog. Then opened NIS, ran ‘Security Inspector’ and, lo and behold, It said that my IP addresses had been redirected – pretty obvious that it’s Spybot’s ‘immunize’ facility that’s doing the re-directing. Thanks again both for help

      Ken,
Thanks for the pointers – much appreciated. They’re useful and will add yet another layer of protection. I should have picked up on the e-mail address ‘anything’ before the @ sign option – knew about it but hadn’t thought about it in the context of filtering!
      Cheers,

    • in reply to: SPAM addresses question #1069354

      Doc,
Way back in July last year I promised to update on how I got on resolving (or not) my SPAM issue. It’s been a long time ‘a-coming’, for which my apologies. I have managed to reach a relatively successful solution, based on compromise.
My ISP (Orange) has, over time, become quite good at identifying SPAM mail and offers a facility to have mail that it tags as SPAM to be automatically directed to the users Junk Mail folder which resides on the ISP’s e-mail facility. The most useful bit about this is that when I open up OE (which is my e-mail facility of choice), all the marked SPAM is directed to the Junk Mail folder on the server – thus it never reaches me in OE!

The ISP automatically deletes Junk Mail after 10 days. What I’ve been doing over time is occasionally visiting the ISP’s Junk Mail folder to make sure that nothing I want is slipping through the net; where it has, I just add the relevant wrongly identified SPAM address (or domain) to my ISP Mail’s ‘White’ list.

It’s not foolproof! I do still get the odd SPAM mail slipping through because my ISP has failed to identify it as such, but you can’t have everything! What I intend to do over time is that if the SPAM slipping through begins to increase in volume then I’ll start logging on to my ISP mail service for a while and tagging the offending messages as SPAM.

For now though, I’m (touch wood) virtually SPAM free!

Your tip re sorting it out at ISP level was a good pointer.

      Cheers!
      Keith

    • in reply to: Memory Error (IE6, XP MCE) #1063788

      John,
I’ve had these type of error messages ever since I loaded Norton Internet Security 2007, always coming as I turn off my computer. They don’t seem to cause any problems as my system still shuts down and there is no problem when I open up again – If it’s the same issue then I think there have been many mentions under the ‘spyware’ topic – you might also try googling the error message to see what gets thrown up. If you don’t have NIS 2007 then it’s obviously a different issue.
      Keith

edited to add: Sorry, I should have said that the file referenced to the error message (if it’s to do with NIS) is always ‘ccSvcHst’

    • in reply to: Microsoft Automatic Update (Windows XP sp2) #1061072

      Mike,
I have NIS 2007 which includes the NPC. I also have windows auto update set to advise me rather than auto update, and have no problems with NPC flagging up a problem. What you might like to try is to click on the ‘options’ tab at the top of the NPC page and then select the ‘advanced’ option. Under the heading ‘Windows alert Settings’ untick the ‘show Windows Auto Update alerts’ . Seems to work for me. Let me know if it stops the problem.

    • in reply to: NIS 2007 & Spybot S&D 1.3 #1050069

      Bob,
Just to square the circle in case anyone else gets similar probs in future! All went well with Windows Security Centre (WSC) running until I turned on my computer today, at which time I noticed that it had, again, been disabled. I started to look at NIS more closely and found a small ‘options’ underline within the Norton Protection Centre main window – this led me to a option headed “Windows Security Centre Settings”, with a tick-box for “show messages from WSC” (its default setting was unticked) – I ticked this, okayed out, and rebooted. Lo and behold, WSC came up without a problem!
NIS default action seems to have been to automatically turn off WSC each time I booted up. We got there in the end. Thanks very much for your time and effort, much appreciated.
