Firefox installed this new version and little did I know what was going on in my computer. It uninstalled all contents of previous Firefox versions! It changed browser settings and now you can’t revert to your previous version. I uninstalled Firefox 40 and tried to re-install my previous version, only to have Firefox re-install the new version! Something in this operation, disabled all of my Windows Services! When I attempted to booted back up, I was not able to do so. Just today I finally was able to get my computer back up and running, but not like it was before the installation. I believe that Mozilla is joining the ranks of Microsoft 10, Google, Apple and others who are secretly changing their privacy and terms of use polices, in order to have more control over their products and what they can use them for inside your computer. Here is a link to a website that is just a whelm of information about these companies and there underhandedness! Go there and read the information, I’m sure you will be as shocked as I was! http://redir.emsisoft.com/nl.aspx/woerwfw/150908/emsi.at/win10spy?ref=ticker150908&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_content=blog&utm_campaign=ticker150908

The drive is a Western Digital “Green” (environmentally thrifty). It goes to sleep after not being accessed for a while. I don’t know if it can be told to stay permanently awake.

You can stop your computer from going to sleep, you can set the time that you want it to remain alive.
Go to control panel – Power Options – Change the settings to The Balanced option. Then pick your choices and save then!

    • in reply to: Windows Update Not Working #1449361

I too am having problems with updates failure. I’m almost about to stop updating anything for Windows and take my chances! I have tried and the updates have failed 5 consecutive times. I had to log-in online for this new security Microsoft has set up, because each time there was a problem with the codes emailed to me. I’ve received three calls with the codes and they work but I’m redirected right back to where I started for another verification of who I am and it starts all over again… Microsoft’s website seem to have been hacked. Another thing, why does the updates download each time they fail, they download again each time using up my data usage that is costly!

If the downloads are actually downloading then where are they once the installation fails? Did this five times, if they are downloaded why are they not kept on the computer? Does this have anything to do with them being downloaded in the background or is there an attempt by Microsoft to download them from their servers onto my Computer? I used up 157.8 MB with these failures, I’m not Bill Gates or Microsoft and have money to waist. Has anyone else had problems, in the last two weeks trying to get their updates to install?

    • in reply to: Have you tried 8.1.1? If so, how do you like it? #1449338

I hate it, it requires too muck activity just to use your computer. Microsoft is scamming its customers by making all of these newer versions, Why? To keep them hooked on Windows, I say if it isn’t broken then don’t try and fix it! I’ve noticed that when the newer versions update it includes parts of many older versions of Windows. “I DON’T LIKE WINDOWS 8.1.1 PERIOD”.

    • in reply to: Limitations of VPN connection #1443949

I’m using a VPN service and it’s working fine. The only thing is when I try and upload an attachment to my emails it crashes for a second and then returns me to my inbox where I started. When I deactivate the service I am then able to attach items to my emails. Anyone have any ideas about what might be happening?

    • in reply to: Sorting out the revolution in PC backups: Part 1 #1438747

“Cloud-storage/backup services are now extremely common.”

It’s common but where is it exactly storing your Information? Why would anyone with common sense want to place the contents of their computer on a server, only God knows where it’s at! It is bad enough that all of the Big companies are already spying on us without our permission, now these companies want us to surrender our information voluntarily… I’m very Leary about surfing the Internet today because everybody and their Mother is spying today. I’m truly surprised that anyone has fallen for this Cloud backup.

I back up to three different outside drives that are connected to my computer with three different backup systems. Acronis True Image, Paragon Back up and an old faithful, Storage Sync. Each one is setup to backup to a different drive! One drive holds images, another full computer backups and Increments and the last one holds my Documents, Music and Pictures. Being that it’s all automated, I only have to periodically check to see if everything is going as planned.

    • in reply to: Who will be Interested in moving up to Windows 8 #1346718

America… America, Bill Gates Microsoft software is milking diehard Window users like a “Jersey cow”. My Windows XP Pro went down because I decided to connect to the Internet for updates for it after the end-of-life cycle. Much to my surprise it was updating XP with Vista components and soon after my XP died and so did the hard drive(IBM) that it was on… I already know what some are going to say but let me elaborate on this subject just a bit! Windows XP came loaded on my IBM Netvista with the original IBM hard drive still in tact, no problems ever for 12 1/2 years, after that particular update the computer started to act up. within a month it crashed and that was “The End“.

I ran Vista for 2 1/2 years with constant problems but was always able to fix or get them fixed with tech support until that fatal day that the OS went “GAGA” on me. Tech support took me through the rituals of UN-installing and re-installing Vista from their disk that came with their computer that I bought from Costco (ZT Systems). Tech support was not able to help me re-install the system. After their help the OS became infected and the infection killed the hard drive… Not able to find the sys config file!

O.K. I went and bought a new computer with Windows 7 (OEM) installed on it which did not want to boot-up after I set it up, it took some restarts before finally if booted in to Windows 7. I had never seen the Windows 7 OS and was trying to maneuver it with out any manuals or help from the store where I bought the computer. I was informed that in order to get help I would need to “Buy Software Insurance” from them or the manufacturer in order to get help. Both options would have been costly, hundreds of dollars for help with a new OS already installed when I purchased the computer… I declined!

Now the Windows 8 OS is the “Shock and Awe” from Microsoft, because this is just the beginning of this “New Era” of Microsoft so Microsoft can earn the wealth all over again. Not to mention, in my opinion, that IE is copying everything that FF does and seem to be overriding FF even though FF is designated as my preferred browser. In Windows 8 IE will be the only choice you have for your browser and the only software you will be able to use is that made by Microsoft, I’m not shocked at all. Does Bill Gates think that he can really control our computers by eliminating the competition, Yes, that is how arrogant Microsoft is with his Windows software.

I’ve suspected for years that Microsoft was buying up smaller software companies that posed a threat to them and now I have reason to believe that I was right, just as he bought-out the creator of DOS! I for one will not become a slave to Microsoft and its OS. I’ve been waiting for a good reason to switch to another OS and now, is as good of a time as ever! Windows has been a modification of all of its earlier versions for years basically upgrading and what they believed improving the appearance of the OS… That’s all! Consumers should be able to order new computers without any OS installed on them because, although the OS installed is OEM, consumers are still paying money for the license for it’s installation on your new computer with zero tech support with out software insurance that is purchased separately!
