      [snip]
Say I want to find a file called Emma.doc which I know exists in My Documents. If I type Emma.doc in either the box at the top, or in the File name box, what then? There is no button to click to start the search, so all you can do is press Enter to be told that nothing was found. If I want to specify things like when the file was modified, the only choices I get in the Date field are Any, Today, Yesterday, Last week or Last month.

Whereas if I click the link at the bottom saying Click here to use Search companion, I can say when the file was modified, specify the file name, click a user-friendly button that says Search and it finds the file almost immediately.

Yep, Enter works. Or press the button “Desktop” (it is button).

Windows Search uses an index in contrast to the Search Companion (XP’s native search). Have you let it finish its indexing of the My Documents folder, or checked that it is included in the index?

I use a combination of Windows Search, Search Companion and the Command Prompt depnding on what I want to do; and yes date strings such as >=2009-11-25<2009-11-30 in Windows Search is awkward.

I can't tell you why you shouldn't uninstall it again. I do not only use Windows Search, but that's perhaps a matter for another thread.

Still looking…nothing has happened for 14 hours!

Oh. The screensaver kicked in and saved my eyes…

    • in reply to: Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 #1187224

When something cannot be removed after it is installed I like to be certain of what I am getting before I do something permanent.

I know that, we have discussed MSXML & updates before.

Eh, but to be honest, I’ve not looked closer at this latest update for the different versions: KB973688 for MSXML4 SP2; KB973685 for MSXML4 SP3; KB973686 for MSXML6 SP2 etc. And I’m probably not going to do it. It seems to fix XHTML parsing in some cases.

    • in reply to: Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 #1187208

I agree with Joe. However some comments:

As you have seen before, MS do update the different MSXML services every now and then. I believe that for MSXML4, Service Pack 3 is the latest, and last, service pack level; your mentioned patch is for MSXML4 SP2. MSXML4 SP3 was released some months ago, I think. But it is old and on its way out.
A quote from here: Download details: MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 3 (Microsoft XML Core Services)

MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) is a complete replacement of MSXML 4.0, MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2). MSXML 4.0 SP3 provides a number of security and reliability bug fixes. Support will end for MSXML 4.0 SP2 in 4/13/2010.

But as you say, there are some recent updates (a week ago) to among other MSXML 4.0.

KB973688 for SP2 (the one you mentioned)
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=00bcdf28-2299-4150-964d-88a601e25229&displaylang=en

      KB973685 for SP3
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e35f3dd3-1bb7-4c74-aed2-49dbae77546b&DisplayLang=en

This recently added update is also for the MSXML6 SP2, KB973686 in that case.

I have not installed this latest update, yet.

There are some different functionalities in the different MSXML versions, and I don’t use (or have applications that use) ver. 4, but as with every other part of the OS or its additions I think it’s essential to keep these MSXML services updated. For example Office 2003 and the following added MSXML5. MSXML6 is included in XP SP3, some .NET, or added by software even if one is using XP SP2 etc.

I don’t know anything about the differences in detail between MSXML4 and MSXML6, but the recommendation is to “upgrade” to (install) MSXML6. And as you know having several of these services is no problem, to quote MS:

MSXML6 will install side by side with MSXML 3 and MSXML4 and will not impact existing applications that use MSXML3 and MSXML4 …

See this blog post about the release of MSXML4 SP3, the recommendation to upgrade to MSXML6: http://blogs.msdn.com/xmlteam/archive/2009/03/06/msxml4-sp3-is-available-now.aspx
And the other link about upgrading from the above blog post: http://blogs.msdn.com/xmlteam/archive/2007/03/12/upgrading-to-msxml-6-0.aspx

Just to give a heads up on the end of support on MSXML4 SP2 and that both SP2 & SP3 are in maintenance mode, restricted to high impact security issues.

I’m glad the Swedes finally got it right this time! (pun intended )

We did “drive” on the right (hand side) during the years 1718-1734; guess they thought it wasn’t that fun, better wait till cars have been invented.

However, our trains run on the left side, but not always on time; that’s a bit more interesting since we are the only country in Scandinavia doing so. Sharing a bridge with Denmark, and they run their trains on the right side … (but it appears that some use different sides even within the same country).

    • in reply to: Windows Registry Utilities? Any Good? #1187100

If a computer is getting “slow”, nowadays, it’s certainly not caused by items in the registry (in general).

To get it back to the old “pace, space and grace“, if it for some reason has slowed down significantly, one needs to do something that these registry cleaners don’t: uninstall software.

Then it’s completely different matter that one sometimes must remove or change some items since they are creating a problem during installation or use of software. But that’s troubleshooting not regular maintenance, in my book.

One more thing…Right of way must have been “Who ever got it first”.

It looks like everyone is texting…

I thought the film was reversed, because of all the right handed steering wheeled cars, but after seeing all the billboard signs, that must have been the way they were made that long ago.

BTW: In Sweden, cars have been LHD since very early and we drove on the left side until 1967.

    • in reply to: CHKDSK results disappear #1186994

      Check Event viewer:
A successful “chkdsk” should result in event ID 1001, I think, under source “Winlogon” in the Application log. You can see the log there; it’s possible to filter the events, but this is a recent one after your latest restart so that’s not necessary.

Run Event viewer either via Administrative tools Control Panel, or by running: eventvwr.msc

I don’t know what you mean with everything, but if I am going to check or repair the OS I don’t run other applications at the same time.

    • in reply to: System restore not working #1186928

      Salve!

Dimidium facti qui coepit habet; sapere aude, incipe!

      It’s a good start.

I see that Doc was here before me, with the same advice, sorry Doc.

(I was thinking of adding a link to Einzug der Gladiatoren (Entrance of the Gladiators by Julius Fučík) but I am not sure it is that fun given the situation. Good luck.)

    • in reply to: System restore not working #1186923

You most probably need to repair System Restore files or/and other system files, and in this case given your other recent thread, it would be good run the system file checker. It will scan for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them.

Start a Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click the shortcut and select run as Administrator).

      Run: sfc /scannow

See: How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

    • in reply to: Update: CCleaner 2.26 released #1186894

Yes, I know. I’ve used the software some times before, and I cleared some check boxes this time as well. I missed one, apparently …

    • in reply to: Update: CCleaner 2.26 released #1186892

New version of this popular utility […]

And ooops, there my browsing history went to, eh, into the history of lost items.

Time for some afternoon , I think.

Fx is very brisk now, however, grumble grumble; look on the bright side.

    • in reply to: “Everything” #1186751

Tony has already posted a link (and some comments) to the publisher web site.

If you are looking for comments, perhaps it would be a good idea to also point at the place where you found the software, instead of using a screen shot. I.e. posting a (live) link.

In the case of cnet downloads it’s under Search Tools: http://download.cnet.com/Everything/3000-2379_4-10890746.html

      Never mind that all that.
DOES IT HAVE A LIGHT AT ONE END?

Better still; it has light at both ends. Happy start, happy ending, in between it’s illusorily, eh, no I mean illuminated.
