Slightly off topic:
One could test with the EICAR file as an attachment (I forget where you get it).
How about Eicar.com or Eicar.org, http://www.eicar.com/%5B/url%5D

Sometimes you will find the text to include in the Eicar testfile in the AV help files, then just cut and paste in notepad and save as a .com.

As to AV that protect/monitor webmail, I have not thought so much about it since I very rarely use webmail. If I come to think about something, I’ll return.

A little more off topic: some of the annoyances between different AV products, in my perspective, is not only their possibility to detect, but also how you can /if you can change what to do if a virus is found. Do not like programs that run around and try to repair without asking. Well I suppose many agree, not all. But the major problem is the marketing around the product, some AV’s has PR departments that goes … well I suppose it’s an issue of what you prefer and would like to support and buy. Some interesting thoughts about e-mail notification/alerts that AV products can send is written by Fridrik Skulason, Founder of FRISK Software International, with the gigantic e-mail traffic that followed Sobig in some countries some months ago in mind.

Why (some) anti-virus companies are to blame for the recent e-mail flood

That is, brain dead, watered down, and almost useful.

Short, and yet so true! Almost useful!

Well, since the question was about differences between Home and Pro Backup features I thought might also mention ASR; I have not used “MS Backup” so some of you might know more. As to backup there is no difference. Then we have this new ASR (Automated System Recovery), that makes it possible, if backups are prepared, to restore system configuration (it back up /restore data on System volume only). This feature, ASR, is not available in XP Home. As I understand it, you will be able to create ASR backups but you can not restore them on Home systems, thus it’s almost useful …

Even if had XP Pro I would not use it.

John,
OK, I don’t know if I understand you correct, even though your question is straight simple. It would maybe be nice to be able to clear old passwords from Protected Storage, BUT if you for example don’t want your password to the e-mail account saved in PS, then don’t check the mark “Remember password” in Outlook etc.

As to Autocomplete fields, one can use IE Options dialog box: Content tab / AutoComplete / Clear Forms & Clear Passwords. If you want only to remove some, passwords, go to that site, click in the User name field, press down arrow and delete the selected item. Confirm.

I have a feeling that you already know this, so please forgive me if I have misunderstood something.

However, there is a program, AutoWhat? 2, that can show and delete autocomplete entries, written by Neil Rubenking, org. for win 95, then developed for NT/XP. There is a long story about this in an article on PC Mag site. The program can not be downloaded free anymore from “PC Magazine Utility Library”, they have some sort of subscription.

Simon,
Just one small note. I don’t know anything about these programs you have problem with (Bundle.exe etc.). If Ad-aware and Spybot worked as supposed they would have removed entries from the registry etc. The “msconfig” is a troubleshooting tool, not primarily a startupmanager, as you have noticed. You can de-select items and try a selective boot etc. BUT to permanently remove an item from the startup tab, which shows items both in registry and startup folder(s), you have to go there: to registry or startup folder and remove them. Look under Place (or what it’s called in English Windows) in Startup tab in “msconfig”, it shows where it’s located. I do know about Ad-aware / Spybot, but I have not had any use for them so I do not know how they remove different kinds of spyware/trojans etc. But a removal of an registry post must somehow be included, otherwise you will find it in the collection of startup entries in “msconfig” startup tab.

Jeff, Bob, Mark,
Thanks for comments. Yes, someday there will data that goes ,,, Well, for the moment I have to go through 200 floppy disks as well, that may or not have data and not only obsolete programs etc. There we have a great risk, old floppy disks. OK, for the moment is not any big part of my data back on the machine since my re-install in October, I have the data files on CD’s as mentioned. So there is no big need of a back up image now, would only copy my programs and some files of minor interest. Maybe if I find a way to back up certain directories/files.

Making an image of the HD and copy it to CD’s seems, hmmm, well I mean it could take many CD’s. OK I can see the benefit; if you have an image of the HD you can quickly restore the structure, programs and data without install, configure, patches, patches, patches … Actually as I think of it, the only thing, for the moment, that I really don’t like to reinstall is all the patches. So maybe will take a look at some image back up programs. I have read several of the treads lately on the topic of back up, and we don’t need to start one here.

All this talk about back up reminds me of when I worked as a young consultant 13-15 years ago. As the youngest, I also had to take care of computer maintenence (2 XT and 1 AT smile (small office)), beside installing software, I also did the back up. ~20 floppy disks for each machine (20 MB HD), that we then put in a safe-deposit box.

Bob,
OK, Win Doctor and Disk Doctor, I will take a look at those and some others. Regarding back up /Image program; over the last ten years I have had my thoughts if I need a back up program or not, funny actually. I mean I have for me valuable Excel files hundreds, documents, thesis work etc. But I have until now copied individual files to CD/CD-RW, and have not so far found any need for complete disk images. There is of course people who like to reset their system with an image file in under 2 minutes. However if I understand Ghost in 2003 correct, it can restore individual files in NTFS, but not update the image file. But on the other hand I don’t know anything about back up images, maybe it’s not possible to update a image file.

Thanks for your input

Mark,
I have to admit that I have not looked so much to the different tools, read about them, and what they do. So I now understand that this Windoctor can be useful. SpeedDisk is a some defrag tool?

Well, before ev. installing anything I first wanted to check with you here at Lounge. I have read so much, I admit only briefly; about trouble with Norton this or Norton that. Either a conflict or something else. And I certainly don’t like programs that almost are impossible to uninstall and get rid of. Thus my questions. I do understand that many people, depending where on earth, like NAV.

Thanks for your thoughts.

OK, maybe I’m missing something here, but what is wrong with “Export” Favorites as a file “Bookmark.htm” and then “Import” on another system or the same after a re-install etc? It will maintain the structure.

I don’t know how it works for other people, my Favorites directory is not super big, I think 1280 files & 135 directories.
