in addition to data backups every couple of days, i do more complete backup monthly, which i store offsite. being offsite, i want it encrypted.

Also, i want to be able to access my backups easily, accessing individual files, so that if i need to continue working on a document i can access it on another computer, until the crashed system is fixed.

i don’t believe that win7 b.u. will accommodate either of these points.

I seem to have fixed the winxp standby issue. i changed the power setting scheme to ‘always on’ , from ‘home and office’ . based on my acknowledged feeble memory, i don’t remember changing the power settings to begin with. but now it works. haven’t a clue why it would make any difference, since the monitor off after:, hd off after: and standby after: , all set the usual amounts, standby now works properly.

when i have a chance i will try changing win7 power settings to something illogical and see if that helps.

joep, as i mentioned in post of 10/22, hibernate shuts down the computer. when computer restarts i get the “enter safe mode? start normally?” screen. this is not what hibernate is supposed to do.

i looked at the powercfg report. interesting stuff, it complained about 11 different usb devices. i don’t know where to start in trying figure it out. it is hard to believe that 11 devices are causing a problem. i am guessing that it is something else that is the problem, though i don’t know what it would be.

standby in xp was working fine until trying to get win7 to go into sleep mode, xp standby now does not function correctly. screen blanks but computer still has fan? h.d.? running. it used to be silent. same as what win7 sleep mode now does.

curiously, i updated the invidia video adapter, turned off hybrid power setting, and have switched bios power setting back to S3, i now have, in win7, sleep mode working properly, and hibernate still improperly shutting down the system. and xp continues to not work properly. as far as i can tell bios settings are back to where they started, and win7 device drivers should not affect xp, but something while trying to get win7 sleep/hibernate to work properly is apparently affecting xp.

the problem isn’t as solved as i had thought. while win7 now sort of works (as long as one doesn’t hit hibernate instead of sleep), standby in winxp no longer works as it did. standby in winxp now works more like a screen saver. screen goes dark, but something in computer is still running. h.d.? fan?

so, any more ideas on how to get win7 AND winxp to work as they should?

    • in reply to: show date along with time in taskbar #1252502

      RussB, thanks for reply.

the task bar can’t be make only a bit higher. it can be doubled in height, but i don’t really want to do that, and don’t see why it should be necessary.

the date shows sometimes, and not others. task bar the same height. it was showing on laptop yesterday, not today. go figure!

update: my screw up. i have two identical laptops, one showing the date, other not. so maybe it wasn’t date disappearing, but me looking at different laptop. i did know that i was looking at the desktop, however ;-). i went through the settings, yet again, and found that one was set to use ‘small icons’ on taskbar. i unchecked it, and date appeared. so it appears that i solved the dilemma.

      thanks again for the reply.

    • in reply to: win7/outlook 2010 won't open .pst #1251637

more info: i’d like to add that i have just set up a new laptop, with win7 64 bit, home premium, and office 2010. i had no problem adding the .pst file from d: partition.

so why on the desktop, using win7 64 bit, ultimate? i guess that most people don’t have this issue. i see nothing about it on the web. but i do wish that i could solve it.

later: after writing the above i remembered that i had neglected to transfer the signature and templates folders from xp to win7, for office. i just did that. then, from stubbornness i tried adding the outlook .pst file again, in Mail, in win7. this time it let me into d:, no problem. did moving the folders make a differenece? i don’t see why it would. circumstantial evidence.

iac, problem solved. well, not solved. but, no longer a problem.

Are you doing a File>Import Export or a File >open>outlook data file operation to open the pst file?

i am file>open. i have experienced, and read, that import is not the way to go. as i remember it gets added to the existing .pst. rather than replacing it. the .pst i am trying to open will be the default .pst from now on. (if i get it to work).

jerry, that is the key. S1 and S3. i didn’t realize that they referred to sleep mode. it says in the bios that S1 resumes more quickly; S3 conserves more power. S3 is the factory setting. and, wanting to conserve power, i had left it there.

with S3 set, hibernate is not offered in the shut down menu. and sleep shuts down the computer, as i mentioned above.

with S1 set, sleep AND hibernate are offered. sleeps works like standby, hitting keyboard or mouse revives the system. hibernate now works like shut down (or, as sleep did with S3).

i suppose that it would be nice to have hibernate work they way it is supposed to, but don’t want to spend a lot of time on it. if it is just a matter of changing another setting or two i’ll try it. however, S1 sleep/standby is what i am used to using. if i can’t get hibernate to work properly, i would just as soon try to remove it from the list.

      thanks for the suggestion,

      jeffrey

I should add that other of the Office 2010 programs, ie: excel, onenote, can access the D: drive in win7. Other programs also access the D: drive for data files. it seems to be only Outlook/Win7 that thinks that D: is an internet address.

    • in reply to: sleep mode doesn't work #1251178

Have you checked if your BIOS setup has a sleep mode selector?

thanks for reply Peter. I just checked bios in this dell dimension, E521, i don’t see any settings for controlling what sleep/hibernate does, or what buttons control it.

I have also checked the win7 power options and if there is a setting there that can fix it, i haven’t seen it. i have found the settings for controlling what the power button does.

btw: standby works ok when booted in XP.

    • in reply to: dual boot, maintain drive letters #1251120

      thanks to all.

i have, in win7, changed the winxp partition to M:, and data partition to D:. all is good. and booting to xp still works . a miracle! 🙂

if i knew then, what i know now, i would have left empty partitions at the lower letters and not have had to deal with this. i wasn’t aware of the active op sys taking over c: and rearranging the others.

only a few (i hope) problems to go, to get win7 fully operational.

      thanks again,

      jeffrey
