Many thanks for all the help. My problem is solved, frustration relieved, and sanity restored! It’s very easy when you know how. Thanks for showing me the way.

Thanks for your response. Yes, Writer Help/About shows version 3.3.0 which is the same as the one offered by the green arrow so this certainly suggests that the programme is up to date as Secunia seems to say. The programme seems to work OK so perhaps I’ll just ignore the green arrow message. It’s just a minor irritation when it appears. I guess it’s just one of those vagaries of computers (no wonder I’m so short of hair!) Thanks anyway.

Clicking on the green arrow icon opens a box “Check for Updates”. Under “Status” it says “OpenOffice.ord 3.3.0 is available. The installed version is OpenOffice.org 3.3.0.”
Under “Description” it says “The download location is….etc” It then gives the option to Download. The Install button is grayed out. Clicking on “Download” tells me that a file of that name already exists and do I want to overwrite it. If I say yes the “Check for Updates” box under “Status” says “Download of OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 completed. Ready for installation.” The “Install” button is now available. Clicking it opens a box that offers to install the update. Saying Yes opens a box asking which program to use to open the file. This, of course, is the problem I started with… which program?
There are only 2 possibilities… OpenOffice.org which then opens a file of stuff that means absolutely nothing to me. The other option is the original downloader (SoftonicDownloader). Clicking this starts the download process from the beginning.
Could it be that this is the only means of updating the programme? The thing that puzzles me is that Secunia doesn’t warn me that the programme is in need of patching. Perhaps I should just ignore the green arrow icon?

    • in reply to: Windows Backup – Using the backup schedule #1282372

Thanks for your help with this. The problem with Acronis TI is that version 10.0 isn’t compatible with Win 7. I wish it was. It would have made the migration to W7 just that little bit easier.

You say “that the Windows 7 image creates multiple incremental backups each time an “image” backup is initiated on the same drive.” Does this mean that if I do a system image this week, and then do another next week to the same backup location, that Windows creates another, smaller, file which is dependent on the original image? If this is correct, if I needed to restore my system from an image, which file would you start the process with – the last increment or the original image? I would be tempted to create a new image each week and delete the previous ones for the sake of simplicity, but presume this takes much more time than the incremental method. Am I right in thinking this?

Do you have any opinion on mounting the vhd files that an image produces so that the backed up files can be examined? I haven’t done this before but have seen a number of “how to..” videos on-line.

    • in reply to: Need Replacement for Win Explorer #1279934

      Hi John-O
I too am a very recent migrant to Win 7 and simply hate Win Explorer. I think Win 7 Explorer is a bit like Dr Strangelove.. You may remember the movie of yonks ago, “How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb!” (The Bomb being Win Explorer!)

One possible replacement, which I’m using is Explorer++. It’s as close as I can get to the old XP Win Explorer. Its only little foible is that when you move files/folders you have to close and reopen it before you can access them. But as Explorer++ reopens to the same place it doesn’t present any problems. I’m using it quite happily.
