    • in reply to: New questions about ransomware… #1578841

Dunno. If your in-th-sandbox browser and/or emailer gets a ransomware and your browser and emailer can access and/or affect outside-the-sandbox data folders and fiiles, I’m wondering if the ransomware can be “piped” that way outside the sandbox. Let’s ask the others.

Sandboxie, which I have used before, keeps everything inside the sandbox and you must specifically save anything such as emails/files to your hard drive, otherwise everything is lost when the sandbox is closed. I was just curious if anyone else had experience with whether or not ransomware could “break out of” the sandbox. Anyone???

    • My personal method for saving webpages is to (using Firefox) right click, then choose “Save Page As…”. I save all webpages to a “hints tips tricks tweaks” folder on my hard drive. Then I use Frontpage 2003 (yes I know it’s outdated but…) to edit the page. That way I get rid of all the stuff I don’t want. ‘course being an old retired programmer/webmaster/etc. I thoroughly enjoy such stuff. Might not be your cuppa tea.

Thanks for that info. I logged in to the box and found the date & time set incorrectly. Don’t know when or how that could have happened. But all is well now. Thanks again.

Is there a firmware update for the NAS box? A small software package for the drive itself.

as I stated above… NAS software is up-to-date.

When I am asked for help on someone’s Win 8.x computer, I always(with permission) install StartMenu8. I like it better than others I have tried.

Concerning “Everything search” in the “More great utilities for better productivity” column, the inability to search inside files is exactly the reason I use “Search My Files” & “Agent Ransack”. Both are free. Here are the links: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/search_my_files.html & http://mythicsoft.com/filelocatorlite/download.

After the backup I decided to go ahead with the factory recovery which didn’t take that long, so that he could have his pc back. I ran several different malware scans on the backup and all came up good so I feel safe restoring his stuff. At least now I & he won’t have so much to re-do. Thanks to all for help & comments. Bat.

I’ll try using NT Password & Registry Editor on the keys after the backup finishes. Thanks again.

    • in reply to: Microsoft tech support scam… #1479917

I get the starting windows logo & progress bar for a little while, then the screen goes black and then the box pops up wanting a password. I’ll check the bios for a password though, but I know he wasn’t using a password before the call from “microsoft”. Thanks.

Can you use the “registry editor” part of “NT Password & Registry Editor” to examine and possibly update the two most common keys for startup:

      HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun & HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun?

      Joe

Didn’t try that as I didn’t know what key(s) related to passwords. What exactly are these 2 keys for?

    • in reply to: Current most popular version of Windows? #1471795

would be using a dos 5 box if i had realised that the ‘dos’ in 95 and later was not really dos

If you need real dos, or even if you just really, really love dos, you can have it all and more in JP Software’s Take Command/TCCLE(the free version). Take Command started as 4Dos, a command.com replacement which was far and away superior to msdos/pcdos and still is. I used 4Dos for years before there even was a windows 1.0 and when Rex Conn & partner(can’t remember his name) ported it to windows I have had it installed on every version of windows since. It is truly awesome… I have even seen games written in 4Dos batch programming language… but if you are familiar with 4Dos/Take Command you already know that:D.

    • in reply to: How to control font in Front Page HTML Page View? #1458491

Looks like you’re right, Berton. All good(free) things eventually come to an end. However, there are still many good free html editors around; coffecup comes to mind http://www.coffeecup.com/free-editor/. I love trying out all the free editors. I’m a big fan of FREE.

    • in reply to: How to control font in Front Page HTML Page View? #1458385

I don’t know about FP2000 because I use FP2003 but in FP2003 you can change the font by going to the “Tools/Page Options/Default Fonts/Code View”. As for MS Expressions Web 4, I have it also installed but don’t like it nearly as well as FrontPage. I also use Notepad++ on occasion and it is great as access-mdb stated. However, for fully 98% of all my coding I use AceHTML(the free version) and have used it for 10+ years. See if FP2000 has the font options I mentioned above but if not the CTRL/mouse wheel trick works in lots of applications. Happy coding!

    • in reply to: Want reliable, stable email program #1398822

I used Thunderbird for years but looked for another program when Mozilla stopped development on it.(It is still being supported by independents). The email clients which I tried and found worthy are: (in the order in which I liked them) 1. Pegasus Mail – free 2. Postbox – $10 3. Inscribe – free 4. eMClient – free 5. Dream Mail – free. Thunderbird is still great and I still have it on my laptop. Give them a try (as someone suggested, in a sandbox(which is how I tested them)) and maybe you will find one to your liking.

    • in reply to: Readers recommend Thunderbird alternatives #1352988

I am somewhat surprised that Incredimail wasn’t mentioned. It has been around for a while and is still being developed/supported. I tried it once years ago and liked it but haven’t ever read any reviews about it concerning security, etc. It’s almost as if no-one knows about it. Maybe it’s just too cute:). Does anyone else know about how it compares to Thunderbird, Outlook, etc. for security? I’d be interested to know.
