It looks like I’m coming up empty for a desktop PIM for my Blackberry. I found this at the Blackberry forums:

[*]BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.5 to 5.0.1 supports the following organizer applications:

[*] * ASCII
[*] * Novell® GroupWise® 6.5 and 7.0
[*] * IBM® Lotus Notes® 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 8.0
[*] * Microsoft® Outlook® XP/2002, 2003, 2007
[*] * Microsoft® Outlook® Express 6
[*] * Windows® Vista™ Contacts
[*] * Yahoo!® (Mail Plus)

Presently I’m “getting by” with my online Yahoo account and managed to get my contacts synch’d between the handheld and Yahoo on the web. Yahoo is yielding an error on importing my Palm calendar which it claims to be able to do, so I have a support request active at Yahoo.Com. I’m not too hopeful, so I’m building and synch’ing my calendar, one week at a time! Yuck!

I might continue looking for a third-party app, but none is mentioned on the BB forums that I can find. The web site called “Crackberry.Com” somehow makes me nervous but I may have to give them another look.

When I get home from work I’ll take a look. I have not done that much I mine, I entered them on the phone itself.

And on the phone is what I DON’T want to have to do! I’m terrible with using my thumbs to type! That’s why, as with the Palm Treo, I’d like to have a desktop PIM in which I can make 99% of my calendar, contact and memo entries and THEN use the BB software to synch ’em to the handheld once a day or whenever.

Al, Blackberryhas S/W to do this I believe. I have a fairly new Blackberry curve and downloaded all the S/W I need directly from Blackberry. Hopefully this will help you find what you are looking for. This site shows how to use The Blackberry Desktop Appto do about everything you may want. The Desptop App is available through the first link. The second link is somewhat dated, but should still be appropriate. The desktop S/W works wonders on mine and my wife’s Blackberry phones and our 2 laptops.

I have the very latest Blackberry Desktop and all the other files that it said I needed to update on the handheld.

Can you tell me how to add a new contact or calendar entry ON THE COMPUTER, not the handheld, please? And then, of course, synch the handheld and desktop…

I’ve not had any experience with a Blackberry, but have you looked at MS Outlook as a possibility to sync to the unit?

My version of Office is over ten years old and I’m not up for buying a new version since I’m satisfied with Open Office. But thanks for the idea.

My persona makes it look like the 4th of July!~~!~!~!

I’ve been using the Persona addon for some time and it makes for a nice look-n-feel break. Glad to see they’re incorporating it in the base.

I can check port numbers and see if that helps. But we do get email, just that it always seems to be in fits and starts,

The fits and starts thing is kinda what happened to me. Sometimes I could get emails OK and other times, it would timeout, say it couldn’t connect or some other message. My ISP had me change ports from 110 to 995 and I’ve never had a problem since then.

Good one, Catharine! I didn’t know they did this. I’ll have to dig into it some more. Thanks…

• in reply to: Backing up AppData files? #1205268

Right now I have used up 46 Gb on my hard drive. If I backup all my HD’s files uncompressed/unzipped to data DVDs, that means filling up eleven DVDs every week.

I have to get in Gerald’s camp on this one. If it means buying an external USB drive, you should consider it, if possible. Backing up to that many DVDs (or CDs) has got to be a mountainous chore and very time consuming, regardless of how often you do it.

Modern day imaging is fast and can be done unattended if you prefer with scheduling. Both Acronis’ product and Shadow Protect which I happen to use, will let you restore individual files should that become necessary. I schedule (unattended) weekly full image backups and nightly incrementals which only take a minute or two or three while I sleep.

Selected file backup is, without meaning offense, almost a waste of time, and perhaps money after the initial investment in one or more drives. As USB externals are easily unpluggable, they can be taken offsite if appropriate as well.

• in reply to: Transitioning to new email client? #1205248

I read with great interest the thread on what email clients people are using. I have been using Outlook and love it, but for a variety of reasons, I am moving my wife and will soon be moving myself to something else. I actually have my wife going with Thunderbird, and for the most part, we really like it. However, the transition from Outlook to Thunderbird pretty much reeks. It was hard (read that “impossible”) to move her .pst files and settings to Thunderbird without going through all sorts of obnoxious hoops, and I finally gave up. Couldn’t move the Address Book stuff at all without MAJOR and time-consuming processing.

In TB, under Tools, have you tried the Import command?

• in reply to: Problems downloading email in Thunderbird #1205246

Bought a new laptop with Windows 7 and decided not to purchase MS Outlook. Downloaded and installed Thunderbird. Seems to work just fine, except for one thing: When downloading emails, it tends to download just a few emails (anywhere from <1 to 60-some) and then hang. It loses communication with the email server, and I have to wait for a timeout error message before I can try again.

I've not had this problem since I NEVER get more than 10 or 15 emails at a shot. The first thing I would ask you to check is the port number you're using in the TB Server Settings. For some un-remembered reason, I have port 110 set for some of my email accounts and porrt 995 for others. I can't recall how or why it was recommended that I do so.

Satellite XM radio just played Dion Abraam, Martin & John
I looked around and found an old Smother’s Brothers Show with this rendition. “5 o’clock News” had the audio of the assassination
shots throughout the recording. It was quite heart stopping. I’m not particularly fond of the choir in this rendition but I do like Dion singing
as opposed to a remake of it for the 90’s.

Hey Jude

Good one my friend! He had a dream alright…

I think I found it at this Russian site. Quality may not be as good as the original.

Thank you Paul, that helps…

Edited to add: I forgot to say that as I went to bed last night, I left that FLV file in the process of being “converted” to a WMV file by AVS Video Converter just to see what would turn up. Wow, fuggeddaboutit! The FLV file is big to start with (about 28 meg) but the resulting WMV file is over 500 megabytes! I know nothing about all the technicals of this stuff, but obviously it’s a good thing Paul found an alternative site. I have deleted the WMV !!!

The problem is the video is no longer on that site. It has been removed due to breach of the terms of use. Content Rejected is what I get when I go to that link. I am looking around for it on another site.

If you scroll down on that site to the comments you’ll see others are upset about it too

Yeah, I saw that too. What irks me is that I have a copy of it on my drive but can’t figure out how to make it available on my domain for others to listen to. I thought about zipping it up and attaching it here but that seems like a waste of bandwidth for everyone who would then have to download the zip file. Must be something about MY domain and FLV files. I even tried to rename it to something simple, but still no go.

Here’s one for the adventurous among you. About six months ago, PaulB posted a music video in More musical nostalgia. It was the most fabulous thing I had heard in a long time. So, I downloaded the .FLV file and have it to this day. I was gonna send you folks there but Paul’s link is now kaput as the video has been removed. I’ve Googled for it but can’t find THIS one. On YouTube there are videos by these guys, but not THIS one.

Does anyone know how to find it and, second question, why does my domain refuse to recognize the file if I try to link to it? Is there something about FLV files that I don’t know. I CAN access it and even play it if I access my FTP site.

Corn-fused! It’s a good video!!!

Live at The Royal Albert Hall, Sir Paul amongst various artists.

Enjoy.

Whoooeee, I did enjoy it. That’s the happiest thing I’ve seen and heard all week! I too have copied the link and will send it to a few people who probably haven’t seen or listened.

What a gang of professionals… Thanks for posting it Nathan!
