How can I check my 5 year old 80 Gig Western digital hard drive for errors and repair them if present? My machine, running XP Pro, has been booting slowly and freezing up.

And, if you aren’t familiar with running chkdsk, here’s a brief “tutorial:”

      1) From the Start Menu, select Run and enter CMD in the resulting box. Click OK.

      2) When the black window opens with some form of C: prompt, enter: CHKDSK C: /R and press enter. (not case sensitive)

      3) You should get a message asking if you want to run it when the machine restarts. Type Y and press enter.

      4) From the Start Menu, restart the computer and the CHKDSK should run after the reboot.

AFAIK DirectX 10 was installed by the laptop manufacturer and according to specs at the NVIDIA website the graphics card in question uses this version. I don’t ever remember seeing any message saying I could update to DirectX 11, however if it’s possible I’m willing to try as I spoke too soon, I’ve just booted again and guess what?, the black icons are back

Do you have a backup plan in place, such as a disk imaging program? I think if it were me, I WOULD download a copy of DX 11 but I wouldn’t want to try installing it without a good backup on an external drive prior to doing so…

Has anyone had difficulties contacting or opening any page regarding mstag?

If you’re just looking for yes or no answers, the post is OK but if you want any help, examples or links would make that easier. Personally, I have no idea what “mstag” is.

The biggest clue about the location of Suny329 is the use of strange temperatures, which I assume to be Fahrenheit.

For those (Americans) in the know, AR is the abbreviation for Arkansas and since she is an American, it shouldn’t surprise that she uses °F for her Arkansas temparature statements…

Our “southern” states (normally pretty temperate) are getting hammered by this cold snap. Folks in FLORIDA are freezing!

Yes it does contain a nice description. Oh, and I wasn’t throwing “rocks” at them. In their paragraph about Vista is this quote:
# Click Start – All Programs – Windows Update.
      # In the navigation pane, click Check for updates.
• in reply to: DirectX Specific Question #1197432

There are several paragraphs at DirectX download – DirectX 10, DirectX 9, DirectX 8 and the new DirectX 11 – how to get them. which explain DirectX availability in various Windows versions. There is a mention of a download for Vista SP-2 which adds some of the DirectX 11 features to Vista. I think that Description of the Platform Update for Windows Server 2008 and the Platform Update for Windows Vista is the update mentioned.

Thanks Joe! I’ll read your links when I get home this afternoon.

I did notice at one site I visited this morning that they pointed out that there are a lot of “bad guys” out there pushing FAKE versions of DirectX with which to propagate their trojans and whatever else! We all need to beware that we get OS software and updates ONLY from a MS location.

      DirectX version DirectX 10

The only thing that jumped out at me, and I may be wrong on this, but the MS site says DirectX 11. Care to check and see if that might be the problem?
Microsoft DirectX
Edited to add: Sheesh, forgetfullness! I forgot to say that mine is DirectX 11 and I installed Win 7 Pro a couple of months ago, BUT not 64-bit.

    • in reply to: Another chkdsk Problem #1197388

I am having the same issue as described in this thread. I will often get a “disk corrupted” error when I try to save a file during a Win 7 session. When I run chkdsk, I typically get a report like this: “Correcting errors in the master file table’s (MFT) BITMAP attribute.”

I’ve never used drives that large, so I don’t know if your BIOS could be having trouble handling two of them. How old is the machine hardware/motherboard, etc.? Is this file writing you described all from the same application program or from different software? Is your Win 7 OS installed on the first of the two 1 TB drives?

Aside from starting a Google search, the first thing that occurs to me is – can you disconnect ONE of the drives to see if there’s any change in behaviour? I’ll go do some Googling now to see if I can find anything.

That is true and I’m sorry I didn’t think to say that. Dennis is very responsive. I’ve emailed him a few times and (blush) that’s the reason I paid him for the Pro version, which I really didn’t (and don’t) need. But, he tries…
