Update. I just received an email finally from the author of Sound Association who said that it isn’t possible under WinNT/2000/XP to do what I’m asking. I’m hoping that he’s wrong and that someone will come up with the answer. Even my three year old Quicken 99 added sound events to the registry of XP that work. So did Hot Dog Pro editor, and so on…..

      Well, I’ll keep watching…..

Thank you, Leif! Evidently DOSKEY runs by default when you execute CMD. Good deal…..

Don’t know if it’s worth $40 bucks to you, but you might try AlohaBob’s PC Relocator software. I only used it once, where I used to work and it did OK. Look here:

My favorite fonts utility is called My Fonts. Look here:

He’s also got a few other utils, but I can only speak for My Fonts.

I hate to keep asking this question in different posts, but have you disabled SIMPLE FILE SHARING? As I understand it, that’s the only way you can get all machines to have visibility on a LAN.

I dunno, Dave. Maybe different methods of XP licensing yield different CDs. My ICF was off by default when I installed and so far this is the first and only XP machine I’ve set up. The other machines on my LAN are running Win98SE and WinME. I could not “see” the XP machine shares until I did the two things I mentioned, thanks to a tip from Tim Higgins, here:

Not only do you have to turn off Simple File Sharing, but if you want to access shares on an XP machine from other machines on your LAN without passwords, you have to open the local policy editor and allow “no password” access.

Not sure about this, but try turning off Simple File Sharing in Folder Options

Good deal, Bubs! Glad you’re making headway. Although many years experience, I’m new to XP Pro and picked up the bit about file sharing here: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/. I don’t have a Domain problem but I did want to create ACLs on my small home LAN and Tim’s tutorial did the trick for me. Hope you too are well on the way. I have a Linksys router on my system too and everything’s working fine.

    • in reply to: NETWATCH.EXE #569113

Never mind! Sorry for the dumb-ness, but I guess I found it under SESSIONS and OPEN FILES. The open files key “lies” quite a bit however. I went to another machine on my LAN and accessed a text file, but open files shows all kinds of files that I must have “cursored” over but didn’t open. Anyway, looks like the SESSIONS tab is what tells you what you need to know. THNX AGAIN!

Thanx for the reply, MaryJ! Do you mind telling me specifically where in Computer Management the GUI is? I know I’m missing it but…..

    • in reply to: xp NOT joining nt4 server domain #569100

This is probably gonna be a really stupid question, but on an XP Pro machine you have to turn OFF “Use Simple File Sharing” in Folder Options, View (way down at the bottom). Have you?

    • in reply to: Drive Image 5.0 #569097

I’ve used Drive Image weekly ever since its early days. Version 5 works well with XP. I make my images TO another machine on my in-home LAN and have used Version 5’s editor to check the resulting images, just to make sure I can recover individual files if needed. Seems to work OK. BTW there’s already a patch to Version 5.01 so be sure you get that if you’re going after DI.

    • in reply to: McAfee 6 Open Window #566452

Uninstal McAfee and get a decent VS (such as AVG, which is freeas well).

These type responses a guy doesn’t need! Sarcasm will get you nowhere…..

Failing that StartRun Msconfig.exe and see if it is starting on boot-up. You can disable it from there.

Don’t know how you “cause a folder” to open, but I did run MSCONFIG and don’t spot it. Thnx anyway…..

    • in reply to: Printer Default 10 Copies #562476

This guy runs XP Pro on a laptop and he says he gets 10 copies regardless of printer, work or home. Must be a global setting (switch) somewhere that tells XP to use 10 copies for ALL printers, huh?
