    • Thanks Rick! That did the trick. I used the powershell approach and it showed that both required updates are installed.

      Thanks,
      Bill

    • Well no luck so far! The #1 suggestion by davidhk and Paul’s suggestion is to search in the Installed Updates list. I tried that and it does claim to search in that list but it could not find a KB number that was right there in plain sight!

The #2 and #3 suggestions from davidhk are to search in the Update History but as I said in my message, it does not actually search in that list! It seems to search in the Control Panel.

      So, no success so far!

      Thanks,
      Bill

davidhk: Your suggestion would be good except I can’t get IE to open and run at all! So, I can’t try your suggestions.

      Thanks,

Sudo15: Thanks for the suggestions. I haven’t had a chance to work through your suggestions yet.

davidhk: Thanks for your suggestion. It has been far too long — several months. The problem is on my wife’s laptop and I don’t have access to it very often. She has been using Chrome but I would like to clear up this problem before I update her to Win10 in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the link Paul. I wasn’t aware of that capability. It turns out I was wrong. Even without any add-ons, IE still cannot run. I have taken a screen shot of the error message with the hope that someone will have more suggestions.

      Thanks,

    • in reply to: How to Pin Shortcut to Taskbar #1569508

Yes, I see the same web address in the right-click list for the pinned icon on the taskbar. That is too obscure for my wife! Actually, I first need to find the setting in IE that is preventing it from working on her laptop — mine had this same problem for a while and I was able to remove all the settings I had changed at one point and I never bothered to put them back in one at a time to find the problem one. I need to do the same thing on hers so she can use IE again if she want to. Then I’ll put that TV schedule on a different browser so it can be pinned to the taskbar.

      Thanks, RG, for your help.

I thought I watched my wife try that but it turned out she didn’t drop it on the taskbar! However, when I tried it I got a message about unpinning Chrome from the taskbar. It turns out the shortcut in question is a Chrome shortcut to a TV schedule web page and the Chrome is already pinned to the taskbar. I’ll work on changing the TV shortcut to Firefox or IE to separate the two functions.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

iDrive is very similar to Carbonite. They both store the backup on their own servers online. iDrive saves at least two most recent versions of each file, I believe, except where the file hasn’t been changed since the addition of iDrive. They both do their backups in real time if you set the choices that way. The biggest difference in the two services is that iDrive will allow more than one computer to the backed up into the same iDrive account where Carbonite charges more for backing up two computers. iDrive allows me to backup up to 1TB of data on the normal account and that is much more than I need.

I have not had to do a restore yet but I can go into my account online and see the folder names that I have on my PC and I believe I would be able to restore a whole folder or individual files if that was needed. And, they could be restored to their original location or to a new location.

I used Carbonite for a couple of years before I became aware of iDrive and I like some of the characteristics of Carbonite the best but I switched to save a little bit of money.

    • Thanks for the info. I’ll have to get more familiar with some of those features.

    • I don’t recognize “MRF”. Maybe you can educate me.

      Thanks,

    • No I haven’t used either one of those two on this machine. I’ve used Kaspersky at some point in the past.

After installing Trend Micro (free) it did give me a log file display from the most recent run. The 4th thing it found turned out to be an Adware thing, not an actual virus. I deleted everything in my normal (Comodo) antivirus quarantine so all 4 of those have been accounted for. I’ll go ahead and run one of the two you suggested too.

      Thanks,
      Bill

    • Why don’t you make an image, upgrade to W10 (make sure it activates), then revert to W8. Now you can upgrade any time you want to and don’t have to worry about the deadline. cheers, Paul

That sounds like a good approach.

I’ve had some indications that my laptop might be infected so I’ve spent many hours doing scans. Malwarebytes did not find anything so I thought I would run another one too and I tried ESET and it ran and said it found 2 problems but it never finished. After repeating that twice more it finally did finish by aborting so I never did know what it had found. So, I ran Trend Micro in the Quick scan mode and it didn’t find anything. Then I ran it again in the normal scan mode and that took at least 36 hours to finish! It said it had found 4 problems and displayed a list of them. Just looking at the list I could tell that 3 of them were already quarantined by my normal antivirus but my laptop froze up before I could find out anything more about the 4th one. I finally had to force a shutdown. So now I’m hoping when I reload Trend Micro I might get lucky and find that there is a log file from the aborted run.

      Thanks for the suggestions.

idwutil_600.exe is associated with IDrive. Run a malware scan. If idwutil_600.exe is using too much CPU or too much memory in your system, it is possible that your file has been infected with a virus.

OK, I use iDrive for my backups so I’m all set now.

Sorry to be so late in replying but I’ve been doing some virus scans and the last one took about 36 hours to complete!

      Thanks,

    • in reply to: Where is Product Key for my laptop #1567147

Thanks RockE. I downloaded it from NeoSmart and ran it and it returned the Product Key. The same key I had obtained yesterday using the Belarc Advisor. So, I’m going to assume that I am all set on that front.

      Thanks,
      Bill

    • in reply to: Where is Product Key for my laptop #1567073

There was and is no product key label on the bottom of my laptop and none was supplied in some other way when I bought the laptop. I have looked up the receipt for the laptop and it shows that I bought it at the local Office Depot store last July (much longer than I thought!). The note in the Belarc file about replacing an OEM key with the correct one was about Win7 and in the suggested procedure it instructed to use the one that came separately, which did not happen in my case. So, if I don’t have the right key then it is simply not available.

      Thanks,
      Bill
