Many thanks for all of the good information. I had no idea that there were so many alternatives out there. Best regards.

Hey, thanks guys–really good information. I’ve found that emailing the locked file to myself without changing the file name (it won’t let you change the name), then doing a “save” of the returned pdf email attachment to my HD, opening it from my HD, then doing a “save as pdf” back to my HD using the same file name (usually numbers) somehow unlocks the file. Now, go into WE and change the file name to something meaningful. This procedure is a big pain in the b . . . but it’s worth the trouble when wanting to keep certain records that are sent in a pdf locked format.
      Best regards.

Hey, thanks BobSB, for your comments and support. Maybe if enough people respond, someone will do something about this problem. Yes, I’m going back to FF also but, as you say, sometimes we’re forced to use IE.

    • in reply to: IE9 links display blank tab #1313007

Running Win 7 Pro, 64bit with Internet Explorer 9 (both 32 & 64bit), Chrome, & FireFox installed. I’ve had the same problem with IE described in this thread for a long time. Finally I changed to FF for 100% of my work and it is smooth, quick, and dependable. However, I’m an IE fan from day 1 and still want to return to it. My problem is much the same as described by others, e.g., if I am in Lounge & click on a link someone provides, IE goes to a new tab/window & grinds away forever attempting to load the page (never successful)–only a blank tab and blank window. However, I can copy that link, paste it into the blank window & it opens normally (Chrome, & FireFox will open the same link successfully with 1 click every time). I’ve searched the Internet & experimented extensively–cleaned cookies, turned them back on, run IE without add-ons, adjusted Internet Options (Advanced), and tried advice from others, no luck. Before upgrading to IE9, IE8 behaved the same way. Further, the same problem exists in the 32 & 64bit versions. Seems that this bug exists for numerous people, but there is no solution. If anyone can provide help with this monumental problem, I’m sure many of us will be extremely grateful.

😎 Toiler, you just saved the last bit of hair remaining on my head. For months I have been pulling my hair when attempting to paste pictures into Word 2010. Your solution works! ! ! Many thanks.

    • in reply to: Is Outlook as important today as it once was? #1280661

I’m using Win7 Pro and MS Pro 2010. I’ve used Outlook almost since day 1. Being a university professor and teaching graduate research classes, advising PhD dissertations, etc., I constantly use Outlook for most all segments of my teaching. It is so quick and easy to communicate with students, exchange assignments/papers, maintain records, and file all in individual folders and sub folders that are completely organized I couldn’t do without it. A folder for each student, each assignment, each graded return, all lesson plans, and records of communications, and references is indispensable. Actually, I use Outlook for personal business and basically depend on it to organize my life. When a pst file gets large and sluggish, I create a new one with the previous files ready for easy access–now on pst file #7.

This isn’t the forum to ask this question, but I’ll toss it out. In Word I have placed icons for hide grammar and spelling errors on the Quick Access Toolbar to keep the text uncluttered while typing. In Outlook when using Word as the editor for email, I cannot find these toolbar options anywhere–seems strange. Suggestions?

    • in reply to: Outlook components and Windows Contacts #1279099

I’ll add my two cents worth on Outlook Contacts & Address Book. As a retired university professor (over 50 years), I’ve used MS Office & Outlook since day one. In fact, probably many thousands of student papers, drafts and full PhD dissertations are stored in pst folders as attachments/documents as well as personal business. When a pst file gets full and sluggish, I create another one with the former serving as a call-up reference. I’m now on pst number 6. Like a writer above, I never have understood the relationship between Contacts and Address Book–never have tried as they seem somewhat redundant and sometimes in competition with each other. I use Contacts all of the time (N = 578) and have long forgotten Address Book, I have all the reference material I need in Contacts, including reference notes and brief records. If I want to do mailing labels, Word works well and Access can be a blessing if you take time to set it up correctly. I don’t need an answer because I’m very happy with Outlook and Contacts; however, I present the questions: Why make things more complicated than needed–I’m happy with Contacts where I have addresses, phone numbers, references, and notes? Why not a single source to find people, places, and things? Incidentally, I’m using Windows 7 Pro and MS Office Pro 2010.

Use WordPerfect, it will take a pic paste every time.

Fred’s article on Win7 libraries is outstanding. I’ve long been a Langa fan because he has a fantastic ability to select practical topics and provide logical, succinct, and understandable information. We need more of this kind of material in Windows Secrets versus some of the esoteric stuff that likely is not of value except to a small number of computer geniuses. Short of overworking him, let’s have more from Fred!

    • in reply to: Internet Explorer 9 — finally a competitor #1268205

IE9 is an improvement; however, one quirk is driving me nuts. Must be an easy fix that I’m overlooking, but need help. My OS is Windows 7 pro, 64 bit but I’m using IE9 32 bit. Often when I click on secondary links I usually get a blank nonfunctional window. Example: In Woody’s “Internet Explorer 9 — finally a competitor” article where he states: “The full text of this column is posted at WindowsSecrets.com/2011/02/17/06 (paid content, opens in a new window/tab),” clicking on this link takes me to a blank window (new tab). However, I can copy the shortcut, paste it into a new window and it opens. This does not happen in FireFox–the link takes me directly to the full text article. Is this a typical problem with IE9, or is it a fault/bad setting in my system? Thanks.
