I upgraded from a Vx to an M515 a couple of years ago so bear with me if my memory fails. I believe you can place the Vx in its HotSync cradle and power it up. Have you tried this and turned on the power? If the unit stays on then there is something definitely wrong with the batteries.

      Cheers,

I had been wondering the same thing as “jaylin” and was awaiting a reply. Your’s seem to provide some inkling but when I went searching in the Event Viewer I could not find anything showing the scan results. Interestingly enough, when I did the scandisk, the results flashed ever so briefly on the screen but the boot process cleared the screen pretty fast.

      Any other clues?

Albeit you haven’t indicated the manufacturer of your motherboard, NVIDIA does make motherboards and that might be why you have an entry under the network adaptor section for NVIDIA. If your motherboard is produced by NVIDIA or has NVIDIA chipsets then perhaps you might want to visit http://www.nvidia.com/page/mobo.html%5B/url%5D to see if there are any driver updates that might help resolve your problem.

In my inventory of PCs I have an old Dell Dimension Pentium II XPS266 with 256MB of RAM and 2 HD… an 8GB (primary) and a 30GB (secondary).

I happened to have WinXP Home that I had ditched when I decided than I preferred the Pro version and so decided, as a test, to try it on the XPS266. I wiped out everything on the 8GB HD and performed a clean install of WinXP Home. I expected the worst. However, to my surprise, WinXP Home runs well on the XPS266. I then installed an wireless adaptor and set the beast up in the basement for any guests that just want to access the Internet and perform non-significant tasks.

The key words here are “non-significant-tasks” since in today’s environment and demands, the XPS266 would be expected to fail.

Albeit that the XPS266 and WinXP are currently meeting the needs of my guests, I would certainly support Mark and Cowboy’s suggestion that your beast should be “spruced” up… especially if it is your primary PC and you expect to do a lot of things.

Not too sure what part of the world you live in but in my neck of the woods, telephone numbers have been exhausted to the point where the single area code of 416 (Toronto and Greater Area) has been broken down into a few additional codes. The Greater Toronto area became 905 a few years ago while Toronto has retained the 416 code. Toronto has since blown their limits on 416 and has now been expanded to include 647.

With the new arrangement (I live in GTA) I have to include the area code when dialing friends in Toronto (416) or even my neighbour across the street with the same area code as myself.

I would expect that current day software is taking the expansion of area codes into consideration and I would second unkamunka’s suggestion to add it to the menu. No harm in trying.

I would try calling IBM again and repeat your request for recovery CDs.

Earlier this year I bought an IBM ThinkPad T23 with WinXP-Pro via the web site at a clearance price. Was an excellent price for a brand new machine with lots of bells and whistles. When the package arrived a few days after the order was placed, I was dismayed, like you, that no recovery CDs were provided.

A fast call to IBM explaining that I wanted the recovery CDs was met with queries asking for the invoice number, model type and serial number of the ThinkPad. Within 3 days, Canada Post was at the door with a package containing 2 recovery CDs… one bootable and the other non-bootable. Everything sent fully paid for by IBM Canada.

I would have to hope that IBM Australia would have the same policies and practices.

      Cheers,

Just supporting what a few have said about Crucial… I’ve used their memory in a Dell XPS266, Dell 4550, Dell 2300, a DIY build and a digital camera over the last few years. Have always been satisified with their service, quality and pricing!!!

I’ll also reiterate what was said by others… get as much as your pocketbook will allow, your computer will respond in kind.

Had great success with a reset tool on a Vx that had a wandering digitizer problem. Perhaps it will correct the problem with your Vx. It is free and can be found at:
