      Use the field code “Barcode”.
Help/index & barcode gives details about it.

With insertion point where the barcode is to be placed do:
      ctrl + F9
Type: barcode u xxxxx-xxxx where xxxxx-xxxx is the zip+4 the 4 can be omitted.

You can also use Insert/Field and select barcode and type u followed by the zip.

Please always specify the version of Word in use.
      Check C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeSTARTUP
for a template or document. The contents of Startup are opened when Word is launched.
For Word 2000 there is a second user Startup folder under C:Windows…..
Search for it and check it’s contents too.

If all startups are empty, with Word closed rename normal.dot (delete it if you have no macros, autotext, etc) then restart Word. May be a damaged normal.dot

      If all fails, try this.
First do a quick check. Do Insert/symbol and select Windings font. If a majority of the displayed symbols are verticla rectangles then do the following:
Close Word, Do: Start/Settings/Control Panel and double click on heyboard, Select the Language tab. The window should how United States 101.

When the text is selected to give the ‘frame box’ right click and what did the pop-up have at the bottom?
      Format xxxxx
The xxxxx is what the object is.

      To correct your sample:

      Select and cut ‘key’ graphic
Set insertion point in left cell, right click
      set alignment to bottom.
      Do: Format/Paragraph
set line spacing to single (this is important to having the picture pasted properly)
      Do: Edit/Paste Special
select Picture and uncheck Float over Text box

Next reposition the 2 text boxes so they are below the numbered list entries.

The sample will print preview ok and print as previewed.

The above will generate the attachment.
It is a float over text issue complicated by formatting.

Attach a sample doc if you can. I have some ideas, but they are difficult to discuss via a forum.

When anyone has strange issues like this or w/formatting it’s best to supply a sample.

    • in reply to: Unable to remove text shading #513638

      Linda,
Using the attachment you supplied I did the standard checks with borders & shading as white border lines w/gray shading will produce the same results.
Next, from past experience I checked highlighting & bingo.
Since highlighting is not formatting the ctrl+spacebar and ctrl+Q do not apply.
Highlighting is not used that often so it can easily be overlooked.
Word is fun to use. Enjoy it.

    • in reply to: Unable to remove text shading #513573

      Chas,
The only issue I have with the “What’s This?” is that it refers to character formatting. Highlighting is not formatting. When “What’s This?” is applied against plain text it produce the same pattern: (clear)white for me.
How did that point you to highlighting?

Also, after doing Microsoft support for Word (2.5 yrs) I try to keep answers direct and simple. Too many people don’t want to know how to find the answers, they just want the fix.

Tools/options/general tab and turn off Help for Word Perfect Users.

The text is simply highlighted. To remove select the text and on formatting toolbar click on the dropdown on the highlight button and simply select none.
The highlight button is the one that looks like a highlighter.

Next, does this happen only in Word97. If it happens in Wordpad, check the list of running programs for anything funny. There are some apps around the monitor keyboard activity to prevent typing specific words. But check Wordpad first.

    • in reply to: Auto SpellCheck-Word97 SR-1 #1776330

Simply check Tools/AutoCorrect to see if your last name is in the list with the xxxxxxx substtution. This is a common joke played on many. If it is in the autocorrect list, simple delete it.
