Hi- Susan Bradley from windows newsletter last month suggested holding off from installing KB2687455 for MS office 2010 sp2. I still have this to update and keep getting reminders that this is available on my pc. Should I check the box and install or should I still wait? I ran Belarc and it shows that my pc is up to date! Thanks for any advice.

Thank Bruce. I went to my Word 2010 / File/ Help and it shows that my product MS Office Home & Student is activated but also that there was a trial product of MS Office Professional 2010 with all its softare, and I thought it had only installed a trial of Outlook 2010 – what an eye opener. The option is to purchase the full product or uninstall. So it looks like I shall have to use the trial Office Pro with Outlook temporarly until I can afford the stand alone version, uninstall the Pro and start over again fixing my settings. I am still unable to find the offce pro in the uninstall program list – only Microsoft Office click to run 2010 (whatever that is ) and my MS Office Home & Student 2010. Under 4 in the instructions to uninstall trial program there is no Trial Product or Licencing Operations shown.

Found download by going to Control Panel / System Properties / Automatic Updates and there was the solution “Offer updates again that I’ve previously hidden” which I clicked. I now have the patch(s).
      Thanks

Thanks Joe but still going round in circles. Unable to find page and link with “Restore hidden updates”. Do you know what the url is?

Thanks Dave, but why is there no notification that they have downloaded and are ready to install, which always happened in the past? Tried re-booting to no avail.

I ran the process monitor (good program) and found Kaspersky did use that file when running, but only sychost.exe using it when Kaspersky disabled.
      Thanks.

Yes I have Acronis so I suppose if things go belly up then this should be a solution. Never had occasion to use it though. First going to try uninstalling Kaspersky suite to see if that works.

    • in reply to: XP SP3 Error #1187587

Thanks Joe that does help. Followed your link and I do not have any programs installed n the “Cause” section. Therefore I do not know which of my programs to remove that may be causing the problem. If I click YES to continue setup then I may be leaving myself open to an unstable pc should I then have problems with sp3 and try to revert back to sp2. Need to think about it.

Thanks for all your help. Shall now go and put into practice and hopefully it will resolve my first posted problem in this thread. By the way there is an option in FF (Tools/Options/Main/Always ask me where to save files) and I had this button checked, but it obviously did not work on this occasion. IE7 gave me the option to save
      Cheers

Used Firefox but now tried IE7 and can now save to my location. Thanks

Thanks for the comprehensive reply and as I have an AMD Sempron processor would it do any harm to install the KB953356 patch before I go ahead with the installation of SP3 rather than wait for a conflict ? Oh and should I uninstall IE7 before installing SP3. What do you think?

Just went to the Microsoft web site to download SP3 but was NOT given the option to save the file to a folder of my choice ( see attachment). Where is the file being downloaded to? I immediately turned off the pc in the hope that the download does not continue upon restart as I really only want to install at a time of my choosing.

Thanks Joe, I have now thought about upgrading from Windows XP SP2 to SP3 but remember reading in Windows Secrets Newsletter (Sept 2008) to leave installation in the meantime. Is it okay to upgrade now?
I believe there were issues at the time and had to ensure KB953356 was installed first. Is that still the case and should I uninstall IE7, which I am running, before install? Believe you cannot uninstall IE7 or IE8 after SP3 is installed. Also appears that I may need to uninstall Kaspersky and reinstall after SP3.
      Any further advice.
      Cheers
