This article was really timely! I’ve been having intermittent problems with Word 2007 opening on my Dell Inspiron 580S (Win 64, 6GB ram) for a few months. I don’t use the program regularly, but perhaps 50-75% of the time when I try to start Word for the first time in a given day, it hangs. I used to try to then open in the Word safemode, but that wouldn’t respond. I learned that the only solution was to do Repair on Office 2007 via Control Panel. After a reboot, Word was fine. Lately it seems the hanging occurs more frequently, but that may just be a matter of perception as I try to check more often to see if everything is working. When the problem happened this morning, I pulled out my print-out of the ResMon article and looked at the Processes. I right-clicked Winword.exe and then chose the Analyze Wait Chain. Nothing appeared in red, but I did note the dependency, splwow64.exe. I ended that process and Word came up! This still leaves me puzzled, of course. I’ve never had any printer errors within Word, and the splwow64 process seems related solely to that function. I went through the update driver wizard in the event that my Canon MG 5200 series driver was responsible. I’m not sure if a newer driver was installed or if the older one was merely reinstalled. Right now everything is fine, but only time will tell if Word will refuse to open again in a day or two. If that’s the case, I may go to Open Office, but I’m nagged by the thought the problem might follow me to the new program!

Any how, thanks for the article! If you have any further suggestions for my particular difficulty, I’d welcome them.

l highly recommend User Profile Hive Cleanup Service, available from Microsoft here:

My shutdown time went from a couple of minutes or more to 25-35 seconds.

I really appreciate all of your replies, and I will check out each suggestion! It’s hard to evaluate the many books available when shopping online, so recommendations are particularly valuable. Thank you!

    • in reply to: Header row not repeating (Word 2002) #1086748

Hans, thanks for the prompt response! I’ve been playing with this for some time, and I appear to have solved the problem, at least for now. I ended up unchecking the “Table|Heading Rows Repeat”, then I saved the document, closed it, reopened it, and re-checked the same option. This time the header row repeated! I will post back with a copy of the document if the problem resurfaces.

      Thanks!

Fantastic! Thanks for the quick response; I learned more about formatting tables in general as a result.

I like these two additional extensions:
Scrapbook – Allows for easy page captures that are viewed in the Sidebar
NoScript. – Gives complete control over what JavaScript to display on any given site

Edited by KB MacKenzie to create hyperlink to article
Another possibility is WordArt. Neil Rubenking’s article “Custom Envelopes in Word” described the procedure. The envelope could be created once with the additional address in WordArt, positioned as desired. It can then be saved as a document (with the document to which it’s attached simply being blank). I doubt this method would allow any merges, but it’s an easy solution

    • in reply to: Screen sporadically repainted improperly (Office XP SP3) #866547

I occasionally see this behavior in Word, but I’ve also observed an infrequent similar effect in Word Perfect. I’ve just chalked it up to another UFT (unexplained freaky thing).

    • in reply to: Word stand-alone vs. Word in Works Suite (2002) #862949

Thanks for the clarification! I’m interested in Word 2002 more than 2003 (because the computers on which I teach at the local Senior Center use this version), so it sounds like MS Works Suite with Word 2002 is an excellent buy. I will avoid the OEM versions. I hadn’t realized their distribution was illegal unless preinstalled on the hardware. They are certainly available at many online stores!

    • in reply to: Changing the default Picture Editor (Word 2000) #569683

Thanks for the prompt reply! I should have made it clear that I don’t have PhotoEditor, as I have Word 2000 in connection with my OEM Works Suite. I appreciated the registry information from the MS kb, however. If Jasc can’t assist me in adding Paint Shop Pro as a recognized editing program, I may try experimenting (cautiously) on my own.

      Phil,
This is what I ended up doing, and it worked well where I could pick a unique ending. Thanks again for your help!
