I agree with this post. Removing iTunes is a real problem. After a crash or two, I think that there was a lot of junk left in the Windows Registry. Now I know enough to use Regedit but it is not for amateurs. So even utilities which claim to remove all traces of a program don’t always get the junk; at least that is my experience from Windows start till now. It is best to really uninstall iTunes in the order that Apple tells you to remove it. But if you find problems, go to someone who knows Windows and especially iTunes and have the Windows Registry searched for old links which may be reinitiated by a new install of iTunes. I don’t know that this is the problem but I got my problems solved that way.

By the way, I had a problem with my iPhone notes not syncing with Outlook Notes and found that if the first line in an Outlook Note was blank, iTunes will not sync with the Outlook Notes. This is any Note, not just the first one. That seemed to solve my problem.

I know you are right, but I will fiddle with this D*** OS until I get it right. I got everything backed up OK, and will use a clean install if I have to, but I really want to understand enough to clean out the Registry and make it work without going through the trouble of reinstalling everything. I can always use my other computers to work with while I mess with this one. I will continue looking for someone who knows how to do what I want. Thanks anyway but I already know how to do what you suggest and have a good slipstreamed CD to use in installing again. Again, thanks for your time.

I know I should have used an imaging program, but as this drive had been working well for a long time, didn’t think it necessary to image all the changes. I particularly want to daily backup critical data. So while you are correct, it still doesn’t tell me how to make the thing work like I want it to. It usually takes me over al day to get all the programs installed and working right. I have used Drive Image with some success in the past but haven’t tried others.

I understand but I hadn’t backedup the Windows directory so I could not repair the drive, and had just switched to the backup drive as I was not certain of the integrity of the original drive. I don’t want to have to reinstall all the programs if possible.

Thanks, but I could not install the program due to the error. Solution was to reinstall WindowsXP which solved problems. Reformatted hard drive and as everything was backed up, I didn’t lose any data only time in reinstalling some programs. Moved some data files for programs over and saved time in reinstalling links and stuff.

Thanks, I checked and not the answer. Drives were fine and problem persisted so I reinstalled XP and things are fine now. Fortunately everything was backed up , but Registry was corrupted for some reason. Probably something stupid I did.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will just keep poking about to figure out where the information is stored in the registry. No luck so far.

I have always had the problem that my desktop and wireless linked desktop and laptop cannot see each other, if the others are started after the desktop, until the desktop is restarted, then it detects the others. It seems like the computer checks for links via the router, then never checks again. I fiddled with some things and made it work, but going to the links in Explorer may or may not show the second or third computer, it seems to depend upon whether they were turned on before my desktop. I may be missing a setting somewhere.

Cowboy, sounds like you got some sand in the tank. I think it would be good to find and run a good program to check links and shortcuts. I use Norton System Works to make sure things don’t get crossed up. If you lose printer drivers then you are on a slick road because you don’t know what is happening behind the scenes. I got Roxio with my CD burner and have had some problems when I converted to Windows XP, but now things are stable. I recommend chasing the snakes away or else one day that ol dog don’t hunt no more.

I think I understand that what I am doing is probably not going to change. I did read some of this before but forgot all the details. As I am using Powerquest Datakeeper on a 60 Gb remote drive via a IEEE 1394 cable link, I am not too worried about losing data although I don’t know how you ever are certain that things are being backed up properly. So security is not a big concern. I appreciate everyone’s input and thanks again.

Yes, I got all my computers connected although I am not certain what will work on other systems. First, I got the latest updated driver from Linksys. This is something that I had to do with the cable modem and the wireless as well. The drivers were not identified with my units, but were for the latest version of the things, so look for a later revision driver. Also, I have a Windows 98SE laptop which I connected with a PCM card and which works fine. That was the thing which made the difference. In the System Properties, I had to make sure that the network name was the same on all the computers. MS makes doing all this coordination exceedingly difficult. But my experience is that the LAN works fine now. I suspect that this is a fertile field for someone to create software which will make the coordination bulletproof as there is no reason for such difficulty in setting up your own LAN, when you have supervisor access to all the computers.

I found several things relative to connecting with wireless Linksys systems. The wireless access point, a Linksys USB wireless connection, could not be configured to accept Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer sharing. I went to the Linksys home page and downloaded the latest version of the driver for this program, the version I have, WUSB11 ver 2.5 driver didn’t work but the ver 2.6 driver fixed the problem. I also found that I had to disable Zone Alarm Pro on both computers and let them connect, then re-enable Zone Alarm again and everything works fine now. I also had the access problem with my Linksys cable modem which I fixed by downloading the latest revision of the driver for that unit (in its latest revision, not the revision I had).

I have a similar problem to this post, but not quite. I use a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless Access Point Router to connect to my cable modem. My primary desktop is cabled to the router and the secondary desktop is connected by a Linksys USB Wireless Adapter. Both computers are running Windows XP. Both are relatively new, with plenty of memory etc. While both can access the Internet through the router, they can’t now talk with each other. The Linksys information on the router does not help at all and while I have connected one of the desktops to my laptop via Laplink, and understand something about the addresses protocols, I am unsure how to go about setting this all up. The Windows XP wizzard does nothing, and I follow the router’s instructions, but we get to the point in my mind of whether I should set separate fixed addresses for the two desktops. That would seem reasonable but would like some confirmation as this forum seems to be full of helpful knowledge. The Linksys setup configuration instructions tell me to set the (TCP/IP) to obtain an IP address automatically. Now the router is at one address (192.168.1.1/) and I guess I will try to increment the last digit and see it they will still access the Internet and if they will see each other. Do I need to enter the address via the Browser or not? While I screw about with this, if anyone has constructive suggestions, I would appreciate them.
