      Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the suggestion. I did explore that site, but I don’t feel comfortable making the changes it suggests. Though I have been using a computer for a long time, I started in the DOS days and never learned to use DOS. So messing with the registry and some other things puts me in panic attacks. Show me a blue DOS screen and I freeze up. I entered the computer world as DOS was going out and Windows was entering the picture (or at least you could avoid using DOS), and I chose to deal with Windows after some bad experiences with DOS. I wish I had stuck with it though, since those who know DOS seem to have a better comprehension of how all this works.

I’m involved in some complicated projects right now for a few clients as well as for myself, so don’t want to upset the apple cart big time until these projects are finished. I can live with this little annoyance as long as it just pops up this window whenever I try to access a file by double clicking on it rather than open Word first. And when I open Word first, I never get this warning window. Maybe I can try the MS repair option once I have all these projects wrapped up.

      Thanks for your suggetion though.

      Hi Joe,

I have done a bit of investigating and it seems that Norton Internet Security (which includes Norton AntiVirus) more thoroughly protects my computer than does MS Service Pak 2. It not only protects me from incoming intrusions, but also doesn’t allow my computer to send out info that I don’t want sent out. It protects my private info as well as protects me from e-mail viruses, filters spam and other junk mail and heaven only knows what else. I’ve been using NIS for about 2-3 years now and have never had a problem yet. Have I just been lucky?

Also, in order for NIS to work, I have to disable the Windows Personal Firewall. So not sure if that isn’t counteracting my installing Service Pack 2 in the first place.

I get the idea that problems that different programs might have with the Service Pak 2 are a result of the program stopping Internet interaction with those programs where Norton gives me the option to allow that to happen by choice. So not sure what the advantage is to installing the Service Pak 2. Can you enlighten me? 🙂

      Thanks,

      Marilyn

      Hi Hans,

This is too weird. Someone else told me to go to Tools and then Options on my browser and add newsgroups to one of those tabs, which I did. Before that, I could find “news” nowhere on my Outlook tool bar, under “Go” or under customizations. Once I added it under options on my browser, it magically appeared in my customize window and then I was able to follow the instructions on the site that you gave me and there it was under customize where it had not been before. I added “news” to my Go menu and now everything seems fine. It appeared on the menu bar too once I added it going into my browser options. I’m confused but happy that I now have newsgroups back again 🙂 Between Newsgroups and wopr, I can always find an answer to my problems.

      Thanks again, Hans.

      Hi Joe,

If I am going to back up my system files, do I basically need to back up my Windows folder and everything in it? I’ve only done a full back up before and no longer have that capability. I obviously need to know how to do this.

Also, does setting a restore point do any good when downloading and installing this type of service pack?

      Thanks,

      Marilyn

      Hi Leif,

Thank you for all the instructions on how to get rid of this annoying program. I did, however, find what caused it to start up again. I just upgraded my Norton Internet Security which includes their AntiVirus program. And someone else advised me that if the Windows Messenger box is checked there, that it will make this annoying program rise from the grave to haunt you again. So I unchecked that box in the AntiVirus program and voila, Windows Messenger is dead again.

I haven’t installed XP SP2 yet, but it that gets rid of this Windows Messenger program for good, that alone is worth biting the bullet and installing this newest XP service pack.

Thanks again for all the info. Ya suppose MS is getting the picture?

    • in reply to: Aligning Text (Excel 2003) #910859

      Hi Hans,

Well lots of people have looked at my question, but you are the only one brave enough to answer 🙂

It seems that the fellow who created the charts that I am trying to reproduce used tables a lot in Word, as do I. I managed to get the two pie charts side by side using tables in Word and I am sure that is what he did too.

I think I am going to try tables again in Word with the text in chart problem. I figured if I removed the text in excel and then copied the chart over to Word into a two cell table. I can left align the table in one cell and then right align the text the way I want it in the adjoinging cell. I’ll have to recreate the title too in a merged cell above these two other cells. I’m pretty tenacious and my outlook is that if someone else managed to do this, so can I 🙂

Thanks for some of your suggestions on this one, but I’m very unfamiliar with Excel and don’t understand everything. However, I’ve been working on this project and problem for two days now, and have learned a lot more about Excel than I ever wanted to know 🙂

Thanks again (and thanks for your reply on my pie chart question too),
