      Thanks Leif,

I do understand what you are saying here and it makes perfect sense. The URL you suggested was also very helpful and I have saved it in my favorites so that I can read all of the tips there. It is very helpful.

      Thank you so much again.

      Hi Sparky,

What I have found is that when I check my systems resources there is a note there that states: Drive V is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. When I click on the details, it states: “This problem often occurs on more than one drive. Usually it is caused by a driver listed in the Config.sys file that Windows does not recognize and tht is related to the message ‘Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance’. If you see both messages, see the Help for the Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance’ message first.

If you only see the message ‘Drive X is using an MS-DOS compatibilityh mode filesystem on one drive, that drive is using an MS-DOS compatibility (real mode) driver, which may reduce that drive’s performance. Contact your hardware manufacturer to see if an updated driver is available for your drive. If not, the driver’s performance maybe e less than optimal, but you can still use it. ”

I will try what you suggested in a bit since I have to get off my laptop to get online with my desktop computer. I’ll let you know what the memory test shows.

Unfortunately the tech who builds all my computers is out of town until Monday. I have a feeling he will know what is going on once he returns.

      Thanks,

      Marilyn

      Hi John,

Actually I know better than to change the file extention. But I checked to make sure that something didn’t happen. File extention is as it should be. What I did do is copy the .pst files to a temporary folder and also to a zip disk. But that shouldn’t have caused a disassociation, should it have?

      Hi John,

Well, I got impatient and decided to uninstall Outlook and then re-install. One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post is that when I tried to do a CTRL ALT DEL to close Outlook when it was stuck in splash screen, I got a message saying that my resources were dangerously low. But I had just rebooted and they couldn’t be. I had opened nothing else. Now that I have uninstalled and re-installed. Same problem and same message. My computer is starting up at 63% resources, by the way. Also, I am running Windows 98 se. I plan to have WinXP installed on my new computer. I can’t wait.

Not sure what to do now but keep using my laptop which is quite nice and runs Win2000. I’m afraid if I do much more to try to get Outlook going on my desktop, I might just have a major crash. And I don’t want to do that since my tape back up is on the blink too. Guess it’s time to order that new computer.

One more thing. I saved a copy of my .pst files to a temp folder, but now when I go back to see the origs in Explorer, the icon next to the file looks like they do when there is nothing associated with the file. Before it had a colorful Windows icon in front of it. The file size is the same, but I am worried that these files won’t transfer over to the new Outlook once installed on the new computer. Any ideas on this?

If you have any ideas as to why just trying to open Outlook is draining my resources that quickly, I would be very interested in your theory.

      Thanks,

      Marilyn

      Thank you, Phil.

I changed both options and it really made a difference. I don’t know why that should be a standard default setting for Word. Why would anyone not want those options checked? I’ve been copying a legal document that was justified and was getting frustrated since the original looked so much more evenly spaced. I wondered what they did to get that effect. But of course since it was typed at a legal office, most likely they were already using Word Perfect.

Thanks again for the help. I have made those two options a default setting for all future documents in the future. I’ve been suffering through this problems for several years now.

Thanks for the suggestion. I finally figured out what was going on. I am typing a legal document that is in outline form. I had a numbered paragraph that contained three individual paragraphs for one number. I was hitting Shift>Enter to create a hanging indented second paragraph to avoid having Word number the second paragraph. I found a way to get around that and when I changed the formatting to be a paragraph mark, the last sentence came together. But don’t ask me to repeat what I did to get that I just know it worked 🙂

      Hi Jefferson,

What you are saying makes perfect sense…sort of I know that a .pst file is where Outlook keeps everything, but I guess I didn’t think about there being more than one. I do save a lot of things for some of my clients, though I have it set to archive every three months. I never know when they are going to ask me to dig back a few months to read a letter they received of wrote.

I did empty some of the folders where I kept mail that was not important. Maybe that will help?

Since once Outlook goes through this long drawn out routine it seems to have gotten over its bout of indigestion, I believe you are right. Not sure what caused it to crash…maybe I was running out short on memory and needed to reboot. I can’t want to get a new computer and have WinXP on it. I understand that it manages memory much better than my antiquated Win98.

      Thanks again for the help.

I checked and fast save is off and Save Auto Recovery Info is turned on. So I guess I am smarter than I thought 🙂 Thanks.

My apologies. I misunderstood your question.

      Hi Klaus,

I do think I have my fast save on. When working with these complicated tables, I am always worried something will happen and I will forget to save or Word will lock up etc. However, maybe that *is* the problem as well.

Usually the graphics are all the same thing since these forms are all for the same product. They do, however have to be high quality since the forms are printed.

      Hi Klaus,

I understand what you mean now by checking the undo. I’ll do that next time this happens. I’ll also make a note of what action I took right after it happens again. I might have to be making changes to that document next week.

It is a collated file of 24 different forms. I created it that way since my client has me print sets of forms sometimes. Each form has its own graphics, so I know I am pushing this to the limit. I think I considered e-mailing the set to someone and then decided not to when I saw that it was 24 MB. I do have 256 megs of RAM, but maybe I could use more.

    • in reply to: Editing Junk Senders List (Outlook 2000) #615041

      Hi Bill,

I’ve had the same problem and I think the answer lies in the subject line, body text or possibly the senders e-mail address make up. The list contained on notepad lists many different words and/or combination of words that will bounce an e-mail. It may be that those mails that keep getting bounced contain something in their subject line that gets them kicked.

You can always go to that notepad list and alter that entry, but unfortunately it may allow other mails that you don’t want to sneak in that contain the same information in their subject lines.

      Hi Klaus,

No, I usually set my table to adjust to the window width since I work with a lot of columns. And the weird thing is that I don’t lose the change I made. It just seems I have to go through this motion to get the change to stick. Once I have clicked undo (the left hand undo icon) the table re-adjusts itself and the change remains. I would think, as I am sure you thought, that I would lose the change.

    • in reply to: default text wrap for graphics (XP) #615026

For those who don’t have Word 2002 (I have Word 2000), I just create a text box and then insert the graphic in that box. That way I can position the graphic anywhere I want it by dragging the text box to where I want it. Make sure you make the background of the box invisible as well as the line surrounding the box. If you don’t make the background invisible, then you might block out some close lying text that already exists in the document with the text box. You can do that on your drawing tool bar (Fill and Line tools).
