AskWoody LoungerI would highly recommend Kingsoft Office (http://www.kingsoftstore.com/software/kingsoft-office-freeware) which seems to have now changed its name to WPS Office.
It is a full office suite but is very much smaller than MS Office. It can open docx etc files.Charlie

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 12, 2013 at 12:17 pm in reply to: Hard-disk imaging: In-use versus not-in-use hard disk? #1411632A very good imaging software product is Acronis True Image. It is a paid product. However, both Seagate and Western Digital hard-drives have free imaging software based on Acronis, which only work on their respective hard-drives.

AskWoody LoungerI use ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint as the OCR software on my Epson scanner and found it very good. It came bundled with the scanner so I don’t know what it would cost. Years ago I got ABBYY FineReader 4.0 on the free CD with PC Pro magazine which I have also used with Win 7 and it still works OK so you might be able to still get it for free

AskWoody LoungerDecember 3, 2011 at 6:41 am in reply to: New Win7 user annoyed at ‘unhelpful’ Win7 way of doing things #1309095I have been following the thread with interest and the hope that my problem would be solved but no such luck. I have Win 7 Home Premium installed and I am very happy with it on the whole. However, it sometime does something strange which I can’t resolve.
I use Firefox 8 as my browser and when ver 8.01 was available, I downloaded it and tried to install it. I then got a “Run as” message informing me that I do not have the necessary permissions to run the install program and gives me 2 options: run program as current user (myself) or as the following user, with Administrator filled in in the user name box. This has never happened to me when installing previous versions of Firefox.
I installed Win 7 myself on a new PC and never assigned a separate Administrator user and therefore no password either. I thought that I was the Administrator. Neither of the options work for me and when I click on the “OK” box I get an error message saying “Logon failure”.
Has anyone any thoughts on resolving this issue?Charlie

AskWoody LoungerMany correspondents recommend Acronis True Image as a good solution to backing up a hard drive by making an image. However. I have never seen anyone recommend the free Acronis True Image programs from Seagate (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/discwizard for Seagate drives) and from Western Digital (http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119 for WD drives). I have used both of these programs and found that they work fine.
Hope this helps
