Thanks again Paul.

If I have other COAs I’ll only need to download 10 once and use the COAs to activate it or will I have to go through the entire process of install 7 then downloading 10?

I have several smaller drives 320GB and up. Can I just install Windows7/10 on one of those make sure it works and pull it out of the computer and gradually update the software and slowly migrate from XP to 10? When everything is copacetic clone the 10 to the SSD?

I’m installing it on A SSD so I don’t need a new drive. Is changing the defaults folder location (Program Files, My Documents, temp folders) as easy as it is to do in XP. Basically some registry changes? Are there any issue with doing that?

AskWoody LoungerThe easiest way I guess to do this is after installing 7 copy and create “C:Documents and SettingsMarcApplication DataArcticLineFolder MarkericlColors.icl” using the existing data. That will keep the current icons working and let the new install be in the default location for 7 “C:UsersMarcAppDataRoamingArcticLineFolder MarkericlColors.icl”.
Thanks

AskWoody LoungerThanks! I vaguely remembered having this problem before. I turned of the Sharing on all the drives and turned it back on and it works fine.

The one glaring problem is using sum to return a m/d/y works as long as there’s something in the first column. If not it returns Saturday, January 00, 1900 as the date for all the blank cells in A which makes a mess of the Saturday numbers

AskWoody LoungerThe like threw me. I wasn’t sure if that meant similar to or this exact one.
Thanks

AskWoody LoungerThanks everyone. RetiredGeek do you have a preference for the USB docks? Also These drives are all partitioned since I’ll be switching them in and out of the dock will I run into any problems using any type of scheduled back up?

AskWoody LoungerDecember 31, 2015 at 6:36 am in reply to: Want inexpensive solution for backing up computer #1544328No I was looking for ideas other than in the office computer. I’d bounced around just getting a cheap used computer or using the USB desk top docking bays. So all your ideas are dead on. I’m going with NAS drives, 3TB and 4TB, in the office computer and one of the new drives and using and an existing 3TB for the back up drives. while replacing

My main computer has a new motherboard, the old one died, new processor but the same copy of XP. As long as I can do that with 7 I’ll be happy.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 30, 2015 at 7:10 am in reply to: For just desktop usage is a SSD hybrid worth the money. #1539853Tell me if I’m wrong but the 20% is for over-provisioning correct? At 20% that’s a lot of bad sectors.
So I allocate 20% 5-6BG that leaves close 26GB for the Windows partition and the Program File partition. According to Microsoft I need 20GB for 64bit install and I’ll have another 6GB for my programs. I barely have 5GB of software now on this computer and I could get that down another 1GB if I wanted to. All the User folders/My Documents will be on another partition on the 500GB WD drive. Also from the days of 98 self destructing and filling a drive with ChkDsk files I have a small partition for my temp files on the 500GB also. If I had my way I’d have all my Application Data on it’s own partition. On my office I have almost 60Gb for Windows and 20 for Program files.
You’re correct fast is relative to needs and this is a computer in my bedroom not my office.

This is going on a computer in the bedroom. I don’t even check email on it. Crawling the web and watching TV and movies and listening to music is all that it will be used for.

The way I have it set up now I only using about 12GB for XP between the partition for Windows proper and the one for Program Files.
