Have a look at Easy PDF by Visage Software – I can’t comment on how good it is, but it might be what you’re after.

    • in reply to: IE opens with Windows Update not homepage(6 XPsp1) #680373

I’ve had this happen a few times, using XP Home version – seems to happen when there is an uncontrolled shutdown – power outage or some other lockup causing a quick shutdown. I reset to my normal home page, and no further problems – until another uncontrolled shutdown.

You might want to have a look at this site – I’m not a PDF type, but this does at least have a free version. http://www.visagesoft.com/easypdf/%5B/url%5D

      Thanks for your thoughts.

I picked up the software to provide a quick and dirty solution for firewall and virus protection, et al. Haven’t used the other options that you referred to, although I did read a review that indicated that the disk maintenance functions – defrg, etc – were considered better than the built in ones in Win XP Home.

So far, so good – I also now religiously use Drive Image for regular backups.

    • in reply to: Kiddies’ Writing Software #629095

Thanks for the advice – I’ve purchased a copy of Kidspiration and it is already a hit with my little guy. Clearly it’s more of a teacher’s classroom tool than home software, but the templates and examples that are provided do allow me to use it reasonably completely.

I also purchased StoryBookWeaver, which is slightly more of an entertainment than academic tool, but it has lots of resources, templates, clipart, sounds, etc, to allow learning readers/writers to achieve some learning while thinking they’re playing a game.

    • in reply to: Old Excite Title Bar (IE 6.0 SP 1) #626647

Thanks Joe – I’ll try these over the weekend contrary to the usual advice of “Kids, don’t try this at home”. I

It’s not a usage or error problem, just a waste of screen space, and a continuing reminder of yet another e-world venture which went down the tubes.

    • in reply to: Old Excite Title Bar (IE 6.0 SP 1) #626645

I’m entering this from work so it’s from memory. The bar in question is very much like the Google bar, and in fact rests directly underneath Google. It has a window for entering, presumably, queries. Of course that doesn’t work as Excite is long gone.

I’ll try andpost an image later if Joe’s suggestions in the following post don’t work.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve just downloaded a 30 day fully functioning trial/demo, so I’ll give it a try.

    • in reply to: Word 2000 – incorrect capitalization (9.0.3021 SR-1) #625415

You’re right – a bit strange. vendredi is shown in the Auto Correct exceptions list, but it conitnues to capitalize it anyway.

    • in reply to: Word 2000 – incorrect capitalization (9.0.3021 SR-1) #625407

Why don’t you simply add the spellings you wish to the Tools/Autocorrect/Exceptions list – I have Word 2002, but I imagine the process is similar if not the same.

I went from ME, which was slowly and then very quickly melting down, to XP Home and have absolutely no regrets. XP is infinitely more robust and stable, and easily withstands problems from downloads or other software that would have brought ME to its knees.

I did have one problem with my computer doing its own hardware meltdown – a hard disk problem I think – which caused great problems in reloading XP Home. When you load it, pay close attention to setting up user and admin accounts with passwords – there are a series of threads on the XP forum onhow to do that and why.

SP also does a much more intuitive job of handling multimedia data and programs.

You may have to locate and download new drivers for most plugin hardware, but generally those are readily locatable on the vendor’s site.

Edited by DaveA to add url code
I’m happy to report that I downloaded a full version of SP1 last night and installed it. The link cme from this site which was posted by Leif in another part of the forum – http://www.broomeman.com/support/xp.html%5B/url%5D. This is a great site for everything you wanted to know about XP and more.

I realize the link provided on that page is in fact a microsoft one – I just couldn’t seem to drill down to find the correct direct download without going through the MS check-your-computer-for-installations page which still won’t work on my machine for whatever reason.

The download took about 4 hours on my cable modem, initially at 7 kb per second, and later a blazing 9 kb per sec – somewhat like watching paint dry. After installation – which took another hour or so, I have noted a markedly quicker reboot process, but haven’t had the opportunity to try it further yet – I actually have to go to my office once in a while…

Thanks for, as usual in the Lounge, all the excellent advice.

    • in reply to: Outlook vs Outlook Express (Office 97/IE6 SP1) #618126

      Thanks Leif.

I’ve used OE at home for some years now, and Outlook is several variations in a number of office jobs, so I was in general aware of the differences that are detailed in the reference you provided.

I had just noted on a couple of posts throughout the Lounge some allusions from various individuals suggesting they would always use Outlook and never OE, or words to that effect, and I was hoping to have someone shed more light on why those preferences might exist.

Certainly, I have no need for the vast functionality of Outlook in our home uses, I simply need only the e-mail application, address book, etc.
