      Mark…

I’m the only one who uses/has access to my computer. I usually have a lot of processes running in the background. Maybe I’m just expecting too much from Windows XP. Also, do you have suggestions about the registry clutter I mentioned in my last post?

      Thanks!

OK…Al, I have a 4 gig hard drive that I’m not using. Would you advise that I install this HD as the “swap file”, and if so, what do I need to do to set up the swap file on the second HD? Also, what if I wanted to partition my 40gig HD with partition magic? Can I create the partition without having to reform that drive?

Mark — thanks for you’re reply, although I only understood about 50% of it…LOL confused
All I know is that I’ve seen a real reduction of performance in the last few weeks. I don’t know if there is just a lot of clutter in the registry that isn’t removed with the usual tools/programs (i.e. Norton WinDoc), or if I’ve just installed too many extraneous programs, although this should really be a problem (should it?). Anyway, the bottom line is, The performance of my computer has decreased, and continues to. I really don’t want to have to wipe the drive and reinstall the program if I can avoid it. Thanks in advance for any advice. igiveup

Windows XP Novice here. Would it help the performance of my computer if I partitioned off 1gig of my 40gig hard drive as the swap file? I have a 750mgz AMD Duron with 244 of RAM (give or take). I’m thinking about upgrading my RAM to 520, but can’t do that at the moment. Please advise. Thanks!

    • in reply to: Microsoft Plus for XP-Should I install? (Windows XP) #1793733

Is there another cd labeler program that someone knows about that is easy to use, functional and better than roxio’s or the one that comes with XP Plus?

Yeah, but the cd labeler program is really quite limited!

    • in reply to: Exiting out of IE6 (Internet Explorer 6) #594194

Thanks for everyone who has replied to my post with suggested solutions. However, I’m not sure I was clear in articulating my issue: When I am running IE6, it takes my machine approximately 20 seconds (or more) to actually exit out of IE6.

If I have 2 or more IE6 windows up and running, every other window except the first window closes instantly when I hit the upper right hand “x” box. However, when I go to close out the final IE6 window, it pauses, like I said, for about 20 seconds (like its hanging, or thinking) and then exits out to my desktop.

I do not get an error message or anything like that. Anyone have a suggest fix or perhaps just an explanation as to why this is happening? Please advise.

      Thanks!

Leif — I don’t have any 3rd party software you’ve mentioned except what IE comes with.

    • in reply to: Exiting out of IE6 (Internet Explorer 6) #593182

Not only do I have the problem exiting out of IE6, but I also have the problem with getting the same error box, and it bugs the crap out of me, and is very frustrating. Is there something wrong with my computer? Is there something wrong with the OS (WXPro)? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

    • in reply to: Can’t view JPEG files (XP) #590236

Well MerC, I tried that already and haven’t found a viewer that displays the pics. All the pics that I’m working with are JPEG files. Each pic was put in the folder the same way (pics sent to me via email). I guess the real question is: why are some pics’ viewable, while some aren’t. Any suggestions or work-arounds will be appreciated.

    • in reply to: Can’t view JPEG files (XP) #590206

I’ve been having the same problem, although not in the context of transferring them from one computer/OS to another on. I have Win XP Pro and I’ve downloaded several pics to the ‘my pictures’ folder in ‘my documents’. A majority of the pics will display once I’ve double clicked them. However, there are a few that won’t display. I click on them and the Microsoft viewer says “can’t display preview” or something to that effect. Any suggested fixes/solutions? Please advise. Thanks…Dave.

    • in reply to: System Lockup #580827

Just an update from the last time I posted on this issue…

My system has remained ‘Lockup free’ for about a week and a half.! It seems like the nVidia driver was the culprit, indeed.

    • in reply to: System Lockup #579217

Cross your fingers…I think I finally figured out why my system has been locking up. My hunch is that the new nVidia Detonator driver that I installed was the culprit. It wasn’t a “signed” driver, and windows did warn me about installing an unsigned driver, but I just went ahead anyway. My system has now been “lockup free” since last night, and hopefully will remain that way. Lessons are always learned the hard way!

      Thanks for your help, Moss!

Well, wish me luck crossfingers. Will report back tomorrow, unless my computer blows up… meltdown

    • in reply to: Java Machine (Windows XP Pro) #578880

OK…understand so far. Would you suggest that I install the latest update first, and then rerun the update program to see which one’s disappear off the list (assuming that the later one’s are cumulative), or earliest to latest? Thanks again Dave!
