    • in reply to: Win XP reinstall – No internet #1233597

      Hi Paul
Thanks for your feedback, yes I forgot to list what my internet connection is (Satellite Broadband, I’m in a remote part of Australia), anyway your reply gave me the prompt I needed. I have a gigabyte motherboard with a built in Ethernet card and I’d forgotten to run the installer dvd that comes with the board and has all the drivers.

I thought it would be something simple but it just wasn’t connecting for me. So thanks f0r your advice it sent me on the right path and all is now working well
      Cheers

    • in reply to: Where to go to set up free Family website #1222136

      Hi Mike

For the last 9 years now our family have been using MyFamily.com. Although it’s not free (we pay approximately $US29.95 per year but share this amongst our 145 members, first year cost is only $US9.95) it has everything you need, calendar for family events, up load photos and various files, discussion boards, family tree, blog etc. There are a range of themes you can use for the website to make it more attractive. Also email notifications are available for when any activity or events occurs.

I don’t have any connection with this company apart from having our own family site. I have family all over the world who have been using it for the past 9 years and it works well. There is also a community MyFamily site where other members help each other with issues or ideas.

On the other hand if you prefer some thing for free then I would recommend Google sites, it has heaps of templates including one for exactly what you are seeking.
Hope this has been of some help
      Cheers

    • in reply to: My Pictures Shortcut #1171527

You can use TweakUI to do this.

Thanks Stuart that’s exactly what I was after.
I may not have been clear enough in my initial message. My set up is that I have the My Pictures Folder then a folder for each year since 1960 and within each folder a folder for each month. So if I want to go to say the June folder in 2009 I have to scroll through several folders until I get to it.

So at least now I can set the default to the current year and then only have to scroll to the relevant month folder. Trust this makes sense

      Cheers and thanks again
And thanks everyone else for your suggestions

    • in reply to: Windows XP updates on a home network (XP SP3) #1147421

      Hi Argus

Wow….thanks for the very detailed response. I guess I was expecting too much that it would be fairly easy/straight forward to do but from your reply it doesn’t appear to be.

In answer to your question yes all 3 computers are running XP with SP3 installed. As mentioned 2 are desktop PC’s and the other a Dell Inspirion laptop. All have very much the same software installed, including IE, Office 2003, Firefox etc. As two are my kids PC’s (which they use for their University studies) I like to keep them up to date.

This is why I was hoping just to do the updates once and then copy to the other PC’s.

Anyway I’ve had a look at the sites suggested and it appears the Security TechCenter site might be the best option. So I’ll do somemore research in there and see what I can do.

Thanks again for your assistance it’s been a great help

    • in reply to: Display driver #1140124

Thanks Leif and a happy new year to you also and keep up the great work on Woodys, I’ve been using it for some time now and have always had excellent results….probably some from you too

      Cheers

    • in reply to: Display driver #1140120

      Hi Leif

I don’t know why I didn’t think of checking the the Dell site for a driver, I guess I was just relying on the resource CD for all the drivers, because as soon as I read your response I thought “you twit Dax…why didn’t you think of checking the Dell site”…..probably a couple too many Black Douglas scotchs clouded the brain a little!!!!!

So as you can imagine, I found the relevant driver file and now have the laptop up and running perfectly, now just to do an image so I don’t have these hassles again and I’m all done.

So thanks for the quick reply, I even told my daughter it was you and not me,so it’s thanks from her also

      Cheers

      Hi Hans

    • in reply to: Windows won’t start (XP with SP2) #1107997

      Hi Bob

Thanks again for your assistance, yes it was the CD, when I replaced it with a new one, I haven’t had a problem since

      Cheers

    • in reply to: Windows won’t start (XP with SP2) #1107855

      Hi Bob

Unfortunately it’s done it again but at least this time I think I might know the problem.

After trying to unsuccessfully reboot several times and each ending up having it stop at the Windows screen, I switched it off and pulled out the connection ribbon from the motherboard that goes to my DVD drive and CD drive. I then rebooted it and it is working fine.

Now all I hopefully need to do is work out if it’s the DVD or CD drive and look at replacing it.

Would you know of any way I can check which drive it may be?

      Cheers

    • in reply to: Windows won’t start (XP with SP2) #1107843

      Hi Bob

Thanks for the response. It looked like I was going to have to repair XP so went to put the CD in the drive and the drive won’t open/work, I had to use a paper clip to get it open (Yet there was no cd in it). Anyway after I got it open the PC rebooted on its own and for what ever reason appears to now be working fine including the cd drive.

Ah the wonders of working with computers.
Anyway I have checked a few different settings and everything appears in order. So still don’t really know what happened but am grateful it didn’t involve heaps of $$$$s.

Thanks for your advice Bob it was appreciated

      Cheers

      Hi Joe
Thanks for the suggestion, however I won’t follow it up as my question was posted on behalf of my elderly in laws. They have enough trouble learning OE without introducing a new email client…….maybe in 12 months or so.

      Cheers

Great thanks Jeff, I knew it was there somewhere, I just couldn’t find it.

      Cheers and thanks again
