Are you referring to XP Help. In my version there is only a “Programming in Access” topic (rather than “Programming in Visual Basic” ). I fully expanded every sub topic but never found any reference to the “Visual Basic Language Reference” or even to “Functions”. Does this mean I have not installed the VBA Help (quite possible). I will chase up re the new files.

      Thanks

    • in reply to: ‘Cross-record’ expressions? (XP SP1) #593387

Thanks for the reply. I feared as much.

It is not practical for me to come to grips with VBA for this issue. I have now narrowed my records down (via the query) sufficiently that I can export the data back into Excel & handle the problem there. Also more familiar territory!

Otherwise I would just have fallen back on my old standby of Fortran (which dates me considerably, but which still provides enormous number crunching power … & for me no new learning required).

    • in reply to: List of Functions (Access 97) #593377

I just asked a similar question in another post. Sadly your suggested procedure does not work in Access XP SP1.

Typing “Functions; list” in the Help index yields 80 options to choose from, none of which appears to offer a list of all functions available. Then again, perhaps my ability to scan 80 options is deficient. Seems absurdly time consuming / wasteful? Very far from user friendly, anyway.

(BTW I am looking for a list of Access functions, rather than VBA or DAO functions)

      Robert

Your assistance most appreciated. Yes “Mod” did the trick.

I suspected that may have been the function to use (same in Fortran 🙂 ), but when I searched Help for “Mod” (to find the syntax), the search yielded nothing ! Hence my query re how to find a list of functions available.

For some reason I have considerable difficulty finding what I want in Access Help. Either it is not well indexed or cross referenced, OR I am doing something wrong (probably lots).

I would have thought that if there is a function / operator “Mod”, then searching for Mod in Help would have quickly yielded the details. Then again, I would have thought I could search for “function” or “operator” & quickly come up with a list of all the options available. Obviously I’m too pampered.

May not be relevant, but do you have Norton AV as well. NAV2002 especially causes serious problems under WinXP – especially for OL. As a minimum you need to disable “Start Auto-Protect when Windows starts up (recommended)” (Options -> NAV->Auto-Protect). This advice was from Symantec & it does fix some problems.

Instead, put a shortcut to NAV in the Windows Startup folder.

Winfax10.02 Lite (& full?) also cause problems with Outlook

OK, I worked it out – under “Rules Wizard” rather than “Organise”.

Now, if only it was possible to apply the rule to specific fields in the header (ie. From & Reply).

I’d like to add juno.com to the list. Getting junk mail ex that address & I do not know anyone who posts from it, but I have had legit mail that was cc.d to someone with a juno.com address. That mail got junked along with the spam.

My (belated) thanks. I have been diverted the last day or so, including a close shave with Goner! (Fortunately had the latest security patch applied).

Your suggestion to use the “rule for specific words in the header ” relates to “ordinary filtering” ? Under Junk mail, I only get the option to add (or edit) senders, or have I missed something ? There is a text file listing other rules the OL applies for detecting junk mail, but I cannot find out where these rules can be edited. The MS documentation seems imply that the text file itself (C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice101033FILTERS.TXT) appears to be included for information, rather than being data actually used by OL

User options (that I have found under the “organise” button) seem to be very limited. It would help greatly if there are other options – especially if I can filter on the headers as you indicated.

      Again thanks

I know I seen it, but right now I cannot work out how to access Microsoft Office Tools. I have a feeling that I did not once try the Application Recovery – but not sure about that.

I did a search in Google & did find one report claiming that Application Recovery causes problems

      http://www.msnbc.com/news/448135.asp

Not certain of the details – the link the the “full story” does not seem to work

    • in reply to: OL 2002 lockups (2002) #551914

Yes – I was. I have now turned it off (and rebooted). Now indeed I can access emails with attachments – but I am going to have to try multiple reboots to confirm that “the” problem is fixed, since I have had recent occasions when it has worked OK for while, then reverted to the old problems.

Also, on rebooting, it still came up with the dialogue re a serious windows error etc, so there is still something odd.

I deleted 2 of the recommended dll’s (other 2 not on my system), but I still have not gone through all the recommendations on the Symantec site re WinFax. I tried to disable Outlook integration, but it says that facility is not available in the lite edition (so I cannot disable it). But I notice that WinFax folders still show up at the bottom of my Outlook folder list. Attempting to access these a short while ago caused OL to hang. Indeed these may have been sucked in when I connected to the pst file from my previous PC (which had WF pro 9 on it – also troublesome). Hmm getting messy.

I just now was able to “close” these folders (right click menu). They have disappeared (from view) though I do not know whether they have been removed from OL ???? I just noticed that there is still a WinFax button on my OL toolbar & clicking it still brings up a dialogue to send a fax, so something is still “integrating” !!! I did not take the dialogue further as I did not want to crach the system right now.

Will advise if OL continues to behave now that I disabled email virus scanning. Frustrating because that was one of the reasons for buying Norton – I thought that it was meant to be a good product but it increasing seems to be the cause of problems ?? My PC supplier is keen that I remove Norton from the PC – does not like it at all (even though I bought it from him at the same time I bought the PC ! – my request though).

      Thanks for the suggestions

Do not know if others are using SW – but I am starting to feel that it, and especially winfax lite that is part of the package, may be implicated. In fact I cannot get WF to work so have been using the native XP fax driver. Norton do have a post on their site referring to problems that sound a lot like mine (“Outlook fails to respond …”}. Says that the cause is unknown & no solution at this time (!!!). They have been saying that for a week at least, but I had forgotten about it.

They give a “work around” but it seems mainly to relate to the Pro version of WF. Think that I will try & un-install WF. Pity, I really expected better from Symantec (& I paid for the software !).

One other post I just encountered in mpo advises the following

” I had the same problem (or at least similar). Try this:

In Start->Run type netsh int ip reset c:tcplog.txt

This resets the TCP/IP stack without needing to re-install.

I have no idea why it fixed the problem I had, but hey, it has worked so far.”

But “so far” seems to be < 1 day. I am keen to try it, but feel uncomfortable about messing with tcp/ip without knowing more about the validity of the recommendation (tcp/ip is getting to the limits ofmy understanding). Also I cannot find any file c:tcplog.txt.

      Safe to try ?

Did not find the SW tread in the winxp forum (woody's lounge ?) – just one on NU ?

My SW Pro 2002 came with GoBack 3.0 PE & I have used it once. Work without a hitch – but they should have large warnings that recent emails etc will be lost (I could have saved to another PC on network, but wwans not thinking clearly !).

      Have not tried XP’s version.

Thank you to both nreeves & MaryJ for your replies. To date just 3 others on microsoft.public.outlook (mpo) have reported the same or similar problems, but alas no info on why the problem occurs or what the fix is.

Mine is a clean install of both WinXP & OfficeXP – it is a brand new PC (Athlon 1.4G / Abit KG7-R mobo). I thought I would minimise the risk of any problems by getting all new & compatible s/w on the system – so much for that idea. FWIW I also have Norton System Works Pro 2002 (supposedly XP compatible). At the time that problems were first experienced, that was just about all that was on the system.

It is frustrating & very time consuming. My PC supplier (small local assembler) is doing his best, but it is still costing me a lot of wasted time trying to sort out the problem. So far both the RAM (512 DDR) & CPU have been replaced to no effect. Mobo BIOS has been updated to the latest & both Sandra & Memtest86 run over the system. Will try a new mobo tomorrow – then he says it will have to be a reformat of c drive :-(.

One person (in mpo) says that he is in contact with MS over a similar problem. He feels it is an Oullook 2002 bug, but why are so few people experiencing the problem if it is a software bug? And why no fix if it is a bug ?

Any light on this problem would be much appreciated.

Is it time for a formal bug report to MS ?

Since my os & office are both OEM versions, I have assumed that MS will simply tell me to go back to my supplier. I have already forwarded hundreds of the error reports automatically generated by WinXP each time OL hangs, back to MS, but I suspect that these are just going into a big black hole.
