AskWoody LoungerI’ve been using GoogleGroups for many years and have 10 or more of them. The system works fine for me. When you are doing a direct add of new members, you can add people’s names or nicknames by adding them in this format: John Doe .

AskWoody LoungerI do the same thing with my wife in another room in the house. We just use Skype chat since we both have Skype running all the time. That way we get pop-up notifications, and can even send files back and forth if need be as part of the chat. It’s free and already set up. Facebook has enough of my details without me sending my personal chats via Facebook too… But I know Skype is secure end-to-end…

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 5, 2013 at 4:30 pm in reply to: Wireless cannot connect: “No Connections Available” #1410440Thanks Browni,
I had already tried that — sorry, another thing I had already done that I forgot to mention – what haven’t I tried?)Deleting the wireless adapter and rebooting had no effect…
BUT… I was reading one of the recent postings about the father trying to get his daughter’s laptop wireless running while she was away at college and one of the suggestions was to check for newer drivers. So I did that and found new drivers specifically for Windows7 – several revisions newer than my previously current drivers.
And, lo and behold, that did the job !! The old drivers had been working fine, but then I got a new Hitron DOCSIS modem from my cable company when I upgraded to a faster Internet speed, and that must have “broken” the old wireless. I diod not relaize it at the time since I am always connected by ethernet cable at home. But when I went away on a trip recently and needed wireless was when I recognized that it no longer worked…
Thanks to all for the suggestions — all seems fine now by updating the drivers…

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 14, 2013 at 10:17 am in reply to: Using external monitor in conjunction with laptop: must resolutions match? #1374778Have you tried a multi-monitor management program like UltraMon?
I have pretty much the same set-up as you (Dell 17″ laptop and 21″ monitor with lower resolution. I have the external screen above my laptop in a vertical orientation and mostly use it to keep my e-mail program visible while I work on the main monitor.
I suppose Windows (Win7 for me) can do what I needed if I spent a lot of tweaking time, but I tried UltraMon and it made it so simple. I can configure a number of presets and save them. Ultramon adds several new buttons to the upper right of each window’s titlebar so that with one click I can pop a window from one screen to the other with UltrMon taking care of all the resizing, maximizing, etc.
It’s not free unfortunately, but it is one of the best $39.95 I ever spent…

AskWoody LoungerOK, thanks for the dual-layer DVD suggestion. My new Dell has dual-layer burn capacity, but I am so unused to having it that the idea never occurred to me… Duh… David

AskWoody LoungerMe again. It seems the DVD is a BD-ROM and it is 5.74Gb in size. I can copy all the files from the DVD to a hard drive. And if I leave off the BOOT folder and the LANGPACKS folder it will fit on a normal single layer DVD. Do you think that such a single-layer DVD would be usable to reinstall the operating system if need be (I have other boot CD disks in case I need them).
best

AskWoody LoungerAudacity is good but is overkill for simple editing like cropping and cutting bits from an MP3. I use also the freeware MP3 DirectCut. Loads fast and does all I need. Also saves the file without recoding so there is no loss of quality… You can find it at: http://mpesch3.de1.cc/ (also home to the very simple and fast 1by1 MP3 player)…
