And, then, after using the removal tool, check your registry for remnants of Sygate and Semantec, and delete them. See post 685,682.

      Jerry,

I did use it–twice. See my original entry. yep

Thanks, Bob, for your input. I pretty much decided I could delete the relevant registry values because I have System Restore to fall back on. Any thoughts, though, re. uninstalling and then reinstalling Comodo?

As for bloat, I agree. JV Power Tools shows I have a 66/100 bloat scale. I don’t entirely understand that because I run the registry cleaner fairly regularly.

      System restore??

I’ve used jv16 Power Tools for some time and have never had a problem. It will: “Automatically clean your Windows registry from obsolete and unneeded data. Automatically fix many kinds of registry errors, such as broken file references. Easily uninstall leftover traces of software you have thought you have already uninstalled ages ago. Detect and remove unneeded history data and MRU (most recently used) lists that can contain sensitive information about you. Locate and delete unneeded files, including temp files and duplicate files.” 21 tools are included, and backup is provided for all the tools’ actions. Not free, though–$29.95.

      Exceptions to the one-space practice?

How many spaces after a period [point]? (See the example from Scientific American ).

About.Com on Desktop Publishing: “The Bottomline: Professional typesetters, designers, and desktop publishers should use one space only. Save the double spaces for typewriting, email, term papers, or personal correspondence. For everyone else, do whatever makes you feel good.” I disagree, though, with feeling good as a criterion for puncuation.

The trend, by far, is to use single spacing, but cause remains for double spacing.

Another question is the release/version number of the OEM.

Just caught up with this thread, so my link is probably of little use. On the page I initially linked above, clicking on “Check Prices” will take you to a download page. That’s certainly counter intuitive since the program is free!

I’ve used jv 16 Power Tools , an optimization and registry cleaner, for several years, and it hasn’t created any problems. It offers a number of features. It costs, though: US$29.95. Other “flavors” are available: RegSupreme Pro and RegSupreme (see the links in the upper left-hand corner). They’re less expensive but they also have less functionality.

      Sehr gut!

Antivirus choices have become similar to politics–the arguments and positions will go on and on, not that they shouldn’t, of course. The current PC World has a review of 8 antivirus programs for Vista-ready computers, as well as XP. Kaspersky and Norton 2007 are at the top of the list. Interestingly, the slowdown is 10% for each; BitDefender’s is 124%, and the others range from 2% to 9%. Other variables, of course, affect the overall rankings–ease of use, malware detection rate, proactive detection, etc. I guess in the end it’s all a tradeoff. I’ve used Norton for years and have not had a noticeable slowdown in the last two versions. Before then, that’s a different story.

One source to check, besides Ebay, is screentekinc.com . There’s also a link to removing a Compaq laptop screen.

    • in reply to: Laptop Screen Replace? #1059667

A couple of years ago I had to replace the screen on my Dell laptop. I bought one from Ebay and had no trouble replacing it. In fact, my then 14 yr. old son did most of the work.

      Joe,

Thanks. I’ve occasionally compressed files through Disk Cleanup but have never had problems. crossfingers You make a good point about the cost of mass storage. Guess I’ll uncheck the option.

(And thanks, BigAl, for the link.)
