      Phil,
I thought DUN was completely separate from anything dealing with a network card.
But your suggestion about the icon has helped me to formulate a better question.
This should have been my original question . . .

Is there a way to create or enable an icon for a broadband connection (ie; an icon for the network connection)?
If so, will that icon have right-click options?

OK folks, excuse the (somewhat) silly answer . . . but I was just wondering if I could avoid reaching over and “pulling the plug” by using a simple software solution. I can’t “hit the switch” since that would disconnect my son in the next room but I can easily pull the plug and may have to settle for that solution. I guess I’m just hopelessly curious and desperately lazy.

      Mike,
I haven’t really looked at the LinkSys manual. Since I would have to log in to the router using MSIE then uncheck an option. This is too cumbersome since it is password protected. I’ll read the manual tho.

No, I’m not using ICS. I’ve started posting on usenet in the “Networking” newsgroups for a solution.

    • in reply to: TMP files – How to turn OFF! (Word97 SP2 – Win98se) #609623

      Very interesting work around.
Now all I need is a batch file which will refresh this folder(s) with the current directory listing.
Another way to avoid working on the documents themselves!

      Thanks.

      Thanks All.

I wasn’t clear about the TMP files in my first post. They aren’t being left behind – I just don’t like them cluttering up the Explorer pane I’m working in. When I’m finished they all go away like they should. My customary way of working with multiple files is to work out of an Explorer folder- sub-folder-tree view. Thanks for the comments. I guess I’ll just have to live with it.

      Thanks Howard.
Is there a way to tell Word to create those files in my C:temp folder instead of the Explorer folder I’m currently working in?
I’m comfortable editing in the registry if you know a modification there.

The reason many of us (dial-up connectors) want a router instead of a firewall is to free up some resources. Remember, most Internet surfers are still using dial-up connections. Many of us are using older computers.
I’m still interested in this if anyone has a solution.

    • in reply to: Pasting Formatted Text (Excel 2000 SR1) #548959

OK. I really need to log out and read the manual. I deleted the only macro by checking Window–>Unhide then deleting it. Closed Excel, reopened and tried pasting the “Woody’s Lounge” text at top of this web page. In Word the formatting was retained as green Comic Sans 13pt text.

No go in Excel. Edit–>Paste just gets copied as Arial 10pt, the default formatting. Let me do some reading and then get back after I’ve done some studying. One question before I go. Does Excel have an equivalent of Normal.dot? Maybe I have corrupted it.

I’m finding Excel to be very different under Options. For example, Tools–>Options–>General has settings for . . .
      Alternate startup file location:
What the hell happened to ‘Default startup location”??? Why is only the alternate location listed?

      Questions, questions. Study, study.

Ho boy. What a mess. Thanks for the visual proof Andrew. I’ve tried both Cntrl+c and Edit–>Paste to no avail.

Here’s the mess I may have created. I never mentioned that I only first tried to copy formatted text AFTER I had tried to create a “PasteUnformatted” macro in Excel per Woody’s instructions in a recent issue of WOW. I use this macro quite often in Word. I may have created this monster myself. The keyboard shortcut I assigned was Cntrl+u so it shouldn’t effect Cntrl+c, but maybe it is. I tried to delete the macro but I get the message, “Cannot edit a macro on a hidden workbook. Unhide the workbook using the Unhide command.” How do I unhide it so I can delete it and start over? BTW, it’s the only macro listed in the Tools–>Macro–>Macros.. dialog.

      Thanks for the help.

No. All text is pasted but no formatting is brought in. John is right (see above). We should end this thread. I hate wasting your time on a simple curiosity. Thanks to all who responded.

    • in reply to: Pasting Formatted Text (Excel 2000 SR1) #548762

No. I just want to be able to bring formatting to any cell from another location (another cell or another program like Word).

    • in reply to: Pasting Formatted Text (Excel 2000 SR1) #548523

Thanks Peter. I have already read this weeks WOW. I was already using the PasteUnformatted Text macro in Word97 at work and Word2000 at home.

My problem is the opposite, namely, getting Excel to paste formatted text.

    • in reply to: Page Margin problem (Word 2000 SR1) #548067

      Hi Charles,

Now this really is a novel concept to me. I didn’t know you could install drivers from a device that isn’t even attached to the computer and expect it to work with another device. Whoa! Could you give me a few more details here?

      Both computers are running Win98SE.

    • in reply to: Page Margin problem (Word 2000 SR1) #548064

Interesting. I’ve never chosen the “Ignore” option before! What happens if I print after choosing ignore? Will my puter explode ;-)?

As you can see, I need to do some reading up about minimum printer margins.

    • in reply to: Menu Item Duplicates (Word 2000 SR-1) #539377

Ahhhh, the plot thickens. After I posted my thanks to Word witch yesterday I decided to move Normal.dot from the “Templates” folder to the “Startup” folder in the “Windows” location where all my other startup items reside. I carefully purged all other copies of Normal.dot. When I started Word I had duplicate WOPR menu items again so I searched my HDD for Normal.dot and found that Word had recreated Normal.dot in the Templates directory thus loading 2 copies of Normal.dot. No problem, I thought, I’ll just change the “Location” setting for Normal.dot in Tools-Options. So after changing the location setting and “re-booting” Word I found that it ignored the new location setting(Windowsapplicationetc . . .) and recreated another Normal.dot in the “Templates” folder. At present, I will just leave the file in the “Templates” location and be happy this problem is solved.
