• in reply to: Where’s my Java Control Panel app? #1352632

I’m not sure why the update would wipe out the Java Control Panel. Have you tried downloading the update again either after first removing it or simply downloading and running it again to see if it was, in fact, an installation error ?? If you have not, I’d try this first.

If you have, then you might try using Windows Explorer to get to the Java installation folder, located here: C:Program FilesJavaj2re1.7.9bin. …
According to this Java site, once there,… Double-click the jpicpl32.exe file located there. It will launch the control panel for that version.

Did the link I posted not take you to the page I have attached a screenshot of ??

The Download link (Green Box) there opens a window to download (Run, Save, Cancel) an exe file that, when I hover my cursor over the link, says its the installer for the “AVG- Tick” you seem to be talking about. Perhaps, I’m confused.

Sorry, meant to address your original problem and replied to the wrong post in the thread.

What mouse software, if any, are you using ??

• in reply to: Long delay on right-hand mouse click: XP SP3 #1352539

From here

Use Registry Editor to examine the file association key for unknown file types: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTUnknownshellopenascommand
The “default” value for this key should read: C:%windir%rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1
If necessary, modify the value to match the value shown here.

Hey oldn,
First, let me clarify…. HTH abreviates Hope This Helps. 😉 I’m Doc Watson. Now, on to your issue…..

I don’t know how you ended up with the AVG Toolbar and Google Chrome as your browser, unless they were add-ons to the AVG Security Shield download and you simply OK’d your way through the installation without reading each screen before clicking OK. This happens often because the SOB’s that offer the “Free” stuff piggyback unwanted stuff onthe free installation. If you don’t want them, go to to Control Panel, Add-Remove Programs and unistall the AVG Toolbar and Google Chrome and your browser will revert to what the default was previously. That should leave you with just the Security Shield you wanted.

• in reply to: Definitve answer to the dreaded explorer.exe loop? #1352322

To answer your question about password protecting explorer.exe, I don’t believe Windows would start without free access to that file since it provides the Window GUI (graphic user interface) that provides access to the file systems. Controlling the computer is possible without Windows Explorer running, from the command prompt, but I’m pretty certain Windows needs it to boot.

On to SuperLock….. only one thing is really relavant here. The homepage for the program, is blocked by Avast AV. The utility seems to be available elsewhere, but I wouldn’t trust it. Just my 2 cents. YMMV.

From here….

“Go to this link- http://linkscanner.avg.com/
Install linkscanner to restore the green shield and tick”

HTH.

• in reply to: Restore can’t see the backup #1352014

You asked in an earlier post if anyone knew of a data recovery service if recovering the backup could not be done. Before going that route, if you have the hardware skills, you should try pulling the drive out of the machine and slave it to a working system. Your data is still on that drive, even if you can’t get to it by booting to Windows and you can now see the slaved drive and transfer all your data without risk of corrupting it with recovery attempts.

If that’s not for you, take a look here for instructions on how to use the Windows 7 Image program to restore an image.

HTH.

• in reply to: Definitve answer to the dreaded explorer.exe loop? #1351779

Mikey, I believe the definitive answer is that, it’s a computer and there is no definitive answer. :^_^:

Often it’s best to be happy with a positive result and not try too hard to understand the “Why ???” of the problem. These two events could be related but the value of the answer is probably not worth the research. But…. if the problems resurface, we will have to explore (no pun intended) the possibility.

• in reply to: Need help with rubyw.exe #1351778

Always happy to help. 🙂

Glad you got it sorted out and thanks for the kind words.

• I’d been getting alot of these calls for a year or so. Different numbers from all over the country calling daily and even several times a day. I finally had my fill of getting up to answer a call and finding one of those numbers, or no number, on the caller ID. I’d read about *57 to put a trace on harrassing phone calls and figured, “What the Hell !!! Why not ????

I’ve been doing that for all these calls for about a month now and the numbes have dropped off to about 1 a week. Taht gets *57 too. Try it. Worked for me, but, YMMV.

Many cards are available for Windows 98 Second edition. Cards that support the original version of windows 98 are harder to find. Yours may only be supported by 98se.

According to the MS web pages, these should work on original Windows 98:

Cardbus: Orinoco Classic Gold PC Card
PCI: Netgear MA311, Orinoco 11b

USB: Netgear MA101, Netgear MA111
Cardbus: Netgear MA401, Microsoft MN-520

• in reply to: HELP: Boots to blank screen #1350862

You might try to unplug any usb devices, except keyboard and mouse, while computer is on with blank cursor. Then hard power off. Leave off for a minute or so. Leave usb cables unplugged, and power computer back on. Cross fingers.

But, if the system boots to the Win 7 installation it would seem logical that it must relate to the graphics drivers for XP. Can you boot to the XP CD and do a repair install on a dual boot system ?? I’m not familiar with them enough to offer advice.

• in reply to: Current driver list somewhere? #1350488

I stand corrected. Apparently you need to install SP1 prior to installing SP3. From here….

“Though XP SP3 aggregates all of the previously-released XP fixes, Microsoft now says that you will need to install at least SP1 on XP before installing SP3. The company recommends installing SP2 first as well, though that is not required.”

• in reply to: Current driver list somewhere? #1350406

I think Clint is right. Sounds like a bad installation. They happen and it’s usually best to start over.

It sounds like you have some familiarity with slipstreaming. I’d suggest putting together a slipstream disk with SP3 and your drivers and using that to try your next installation. Next option would be to install XP first and then install SP3.
