    • in reply to: Win98SE upgrade to W2K #591417

      Thanks for the reply.

As it was, I wouldn’t have attempted what I did, but I wasn’t really given any other option. The owner was told that a new property management software package she’d bought would need W2K and she sought my services to install it. The plan was that owing to the urgency of the matter, I would install my personal licensed copy so the company rep could install the package, and in the mean time I would buy a copy or license to keep us on the right side of the law.

As it turned out, W2K is only a recommend requirement and the package would run perfectly well on W98SE, so that’s how it was left. I amended boot.ini to start W98 by default, putting a one second delay on the menu.

Regarding your last paragraph, it’s not that they don’t legally own the missing disks, more that they cannot find them. The major stuff is there (O2K, W98, etc. etc.) but some of the hardware utils/driver disks are nowhere to be found. OK, they can be downloaded, but this would take an eternity on dial-up. sad

My question now is how can I uninstall W2K, or at least disable it so it can’t be used? It was installed on the same partition as W98.

      Thanks for your attention. bravo

What is Value RAM and why won’t it work in the three machines I’ve tried it in? Of course, it could be dead.

Is it just a ‘budget’ type?

    • in reply to: Value RAM #590111

Why? What sort of problems have you had so far?

Other than a stick of DDR having to go back to Crucial under warranty, I’ve been trouble free.

      ‘Fraid not.

      Thanks for the suggestion though.

    • in reply to: How to check for hotmail account? #589843

Any idea which web site has the most ‘hits’ in any given day?

The way you get thrown straight into it after signing out of Hotmail, my money’s on MSN.

    • in reply to: Registry tweak wanted #589521

      That’s the one.

F2 works, but I wondered if there might be the ability to speed up the ‘edit file name’ (FWOABP) operation, similar to the Menu Speed section of TweakUI or the double-click speed option in Control Panel/Mouse.

      Thanks Leif.

      Hi Beryl,

It would appear ‘Alt-Enter’ in the cell does the trick.

      Now that sounds interesting.

      Pringles, anyone?

      Gentlemen,

Thanks for the reponses. The Dutchman’s formula wins Hans down though.

(pun intended, and pretty good it was too if I do say so myself.) laugh laugh laugh sigh

Jolas, thank you. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Silly how something as simple as this isn’t included as standard in all versions of Windows.

Something like this might help. Never used it myself, it’s just something I found whilst surfin’ around.

    • in reply to: Slaving old hard drive #572711

      Hi Maria,

There’s a few things we need to sort out here but I’ll start with the question about the pins.

In answer to the question about pin 1, if you look on the board itself, you should be able to make it out from the white diagram printed on the surface of the board. Sometimes the manufacturers place a tiny weeny ‘1’ on the corner of one of the IDE socket (motherboard upright pins thing), other times it’s a slightly thicker white line. Whatever, the red stripe on the cable is to go to pin 1 of ‘IDE 1’ or ‘Primary IDE Channel’, whatever they’ve called it.

The other cable is to be connected in exactly the same way for IDE 2. I have never found a manufacturer who makes a board with each IDE socket pointing in a different direction.

At the other end of the cable, you’re right when you say pin 1 on the Hard Drive is the pin closest to the 4-pin power socket. Red stripe to pin 1 again.

Connect the Master Hard Drive at the END of the cable and the Slave at the connector in between the board and the first Hard Drive.

When you first power up after the above steps, press ‘Del’ or whatever key sequence your computer needs to access the BIOS setup. (If you’re not sure about how to do this, yell out here and someone will help you). We’re looking for a Hard Drive Auto-Detect function. Sometimes this is a menu item all on it’s own, sometimes it’s under the Standard CMOS Setup section. If you run this, with any luck it will find your drives. Save your settings and restart the machine.

Let us know how you get on from here. Give details of which motherboard & processor you have if you can, and maybe the make and model of your hard drives.

Marc (also frustrated in Houston once, but that’s another story…)

Here’s 2cents from an HP DAT owner who has made threats to his hardware with being auctioned off at E-Bay with no reserve price.

I’m presuming this is a SCSI drive. Is it recognised by your SCSI Interrogator program (EZ-SCSI)? Are the cables securely connected? Does the device have it’s own unique ID? Is it properly terminated?

You’re going to tell me it’s not SCSI now, aren’t you?

    • in reply to: mouse problems #572666

I’ve had similar problems with a Genius NetScroll+ Mouse (non-cordless? version) in Win95b. Anywhere that I left-clicked on the desktop brought up the right-click menu. This would then go away after a reboot.

Downloading more recent drivers worked for me, although I had to use MS IntelliPoint instead of Genius’ own drivers. You might also like to check in Control Panel just to make sure your mouse isn’t configured for left-handed use if you’re right handed (and vice versa).

    • in reply to: D: drive, anyone? #572662

…so it’s a CD-ROM drive, yes? Which OS are you using?

Have you checked the jumpers on both the new drive and the existing C:?

If that’s OK, is the drive on the same IDE cable as C:?
