AskWoody LoungerJuly 22, 2016 at 12:57 pm in reply to: Need some help with M$ updates (NOT windows updates) #1571227@ Rick Corbett –
Thank you, your solution worked, I can’t lie, it took me a few tries to get the cmd prompt correct but I finally did, I enjoyed the challenge – windows and m$ updates are now working as they should –
Thanks again

AskWoody LoungerThanks guys, I have seen both of these fixes in my searches but have tried neither one, I don’ think I want to install Silverlight, I already have Adobe Flash for videos in Firefox and I.E., and I am not sure if I did install Silverlight just to enable M$ updates and then uninstall it, would M$ updates remain installed ? I do not know. So the idea of using the VBS file seems like the way to go, I will give it a try and let you know it works for me.
Thanks to both of you for the quick replies !

Now that you have “Windows update” disabled and stopped in “services” have you tried setting Windows update in the control panel to “never check for updates”, reboot and then try, in services, turning on and starting Windows update again to see if that senerio calms down your CPU usage ?
If that works you then could use the stand alone installers – just a thought

AskWoody LoungerI just want to add to this post some “positive” info, after reading through several posts here and trying many possible solutions found here and other forums I tried the following and it worked, the credit goes to another poster from this Forum, I apologize, I do not remember who it was.
Problem = Win. 7 Home Prem. SP1 x 64 will NOT update
Solution = Set “win. update” to “never” look for updates (do not turn win. updates off in “services”)
In Services (set) – BITS ( started / auto, delayed start)
APPIDSVC (manual)
CRYPTSVC (started / auto )
WUAUSERV ( started / delayed start )I downloaded and saved with “stand alone installers” from M$, KB’s3145739, 3161608 and 3161664
Then ran the “stand alone installers” for each KB starting with 3145739, rebooting after each install (all 3 installed with NO problem)
After final reboot I reset “win. update” to “notify but let me decide whether to down load and install” ( then clicked on “check for updates) it did not take long for new updates to show up, I then picked
which updates I needed (referring to Susan Bradely’s) posts in Windows SecretsFYI : I have hacked the registry as per Susan Bradley to prevent anything GWX from getting on my computer, and try not to install any updates that contain “data miners” pertaining to win. 10
Hope this helps somebody dealing with Win. 7 updates, it is very frustrating, it will be interesting to see if updates still work when the next batch comes out –

AskWoody LoungerI to was has having “update” problems with my 2 win. 7 home prem. 64 bit. sp1 machines, I have been very careful as to which updates I have taken (do not want win. 10 right now) and look to Susan Bradleys posts in Win. Secrets for that info. I had checked for viruses, malware ware and run SFC – all came up clean. I have also spent many hours reading and searching for answers, I just did not feel there was anything wrong with my machines and did not want to fix something that was not broken. After reading through this thread a couple of times I saw that a couple of “posters” had mentioned they felt that (2) system updates needed to be installed, (kb3145739 & kb3138612), I had one of them installed but not both, not sure why. Anyways, I installed the one I was missing, rebooted and “checked for updates” in the control panel – windows updates worked on one machine very quickly and took about 20 min. to kick in on the other – success finally :-).
Just my two cents – don’t give up and don’t fix something that isn’t broken

AskWoody LoungerAs the OP, I have been watching this thread with interest, here is a quick update, as of today I have NOT had any issues with Win. 10 trying to install on either of my Win. 7 Home Prem. 64 bit machines to which I have “hacked” the registry to prevent Win. 10 from auto installing as per Susan Bradley, I received 10 Updates from M$ the other day NONE of which contained any bogus software issues according to Susan Bradley’s review of said updates in her WS column, so at least for now the registry “hack” is working.

AskWoody LoungerGood morning everyone, I appreciate your comments on hacking the registry, I agree it is not for everyone, I enjoy tweaking the computer and if I break it I have to fix it, this does not bother me, I have the time and I learn from all the challenges, I subscribe to WS for the information given there and try to apply it when and where necessary.

AskWoody LoungerOK, I went ahead and “hacked” the registry according to the Susan Bradley article in WS, I figured out how to add the Registry keys needed and add the correct DWORD values – rebooted – ran windows update – it still shows 1 optional update available, so “win. update” is still working – looks like all is well, at least for now, I should be protected from any M$ attempt to force win. 10 onto my machine
If anything changes I will post here
Thanks

AskWoody LoungerThanks for the quick responses, Susan Bradley mentions in the 11/26 Secrets that you can “add” the missing Reg. Keys with the correct values – anyone know how to do this or a link that provides that info, I would obviously back up the registry first –
Thanks again

AskWoody LoungerHere is an update for those that tried to help – as of right now, those emails that would not delete are “GONE” :-), they do not show up on any of her devices –
The only thing I have done to her Hotmail account is to change the “password” at the request of M$, after that the pesky emails disappeared
If things change for the worse I will post here again, but for now all is well –
Thanks again

AskWoody LoungerJerry is correct, I am using Hotmail which is a M$ product, I believe it is aka Windows Live Mail or Outlook .com
@ George, I created the PDF using “Fox it Reader”, I thought any PDF reader would be able to open it
