No, the resource monitor did nothing. There was no “disk tab” to select either. I have found, through long and painful probing, that the problem is being caused by my Nero 10 Backup function. It’s running constantly and screwing up my computer. Contacting the Nero people is a waste of time. The manual was obviously created by somebody that didn’t realise that “real” people use the programs. Try and sift through it and I swear you will wind up a basket case in no time.

The backup function is operating constantly and it’s driving me nuts. I don’t know how to shut it off. It’s also filling my hard drive. I have to delete the files it creates, else my hard drive will fail. How can I stop this program from backing up?

Thank you, CLiNT, for that info. I can tell that you go to great pains to assist people. Thanks too to F.U.N. downtown. I didn’t actually know that there were kits available, though it makes sense for them to exist. What can you tell me about those kits? Things such as skill levels required, tools, cost, etc?

Thank you once again, CLiNT. Your advice is always a great help. I’ll look forward to seeing those links. Now for beheosua32xs. Thank you for your post. I’m sure that your input is also of great value, but, alas, I don’t speak braille – not while I’m sober anyway. (That could be the subject of a future post maybe.) Could you please translate?

Many thanks CLiNT, curioisclive and ruirib.

No that didn’t do anything. I’m constantly seeing why Vista is such an unpopular OS.

      Hi

All I can say is “wow!” That is some impressive piece of work, Clint! You’re worth your weight in computer chips. Now I know why you’re a Super Moderator. Thanks for that. It will take me a long time to work my way through it. I have one other question before I hunker down to study all of this.

My computer problems are complex; that’s why I joined your site. I hear that there are portable hard drive cases out there where one can upload the contents of hard drives to other computers via their USB ports. I have such a problem at this point in time. My XP machine’s external ports have all gone belly up. I don’t know why and nobody wants to know me on that one when I ask questions. I did buy a spare mother board for that machine some time ago and its sitting by my side, waiting for a window in the future for me to change things over. I don’t have the expertise for that at this time, and it will be a subject for the future. But right now, I am faced with the dilema of transfering the contents of the two hard drives in the XP machine to my Vista computer. My Vista machine also has two hard drives and I don’t really want to mess around inside these devices interchanging drives. So my question is this: What can you tell me about these protable hard drive transfer devices, and how easy are they to use for the various types of hard drive.

      Thanks for you time

    • Thank you all for your unexpected responses with a wealth of information. It will take quite some time for me to digest it all. I will have to tackle this peacemeal. I probable will have further questions after that. This thread is by no means over. Thanks again.

    • Those thank you buttons appeared when I had finished my last post. I’ve given both of you the thanks you deserve. I iterate my last question: How can I get all the service packs and additional pathches, etc, that were made for XP? My software DVDs only had the first patch.

    • Thank you both for your valuable information. (I don’t know how to give you both an official thank you because I can’t see any button to click on these posts to do so.) It looks like I will stay with XP then. It is an old machine and I could possibly get another year or two out of it.

How can I get all the service packs and additonal patches, etc, that were made for XP?

    • in reply to: Data Manager on vacation #1378105

After doing some reading about Data Manager on the Net, I realized that it was not part of Vista at all. In desperation I looked at my Startup sequence because it occurred during start ups, and lo and behold, there it was! It wasn’t there last time I looked at the sequence a couple of weeks ago. I unchecked it and that was the end of what I thought would be a very vexing problem. It must have been the remnant of an annoying browser hijacker called “mywebsearch” that I got rid of a few days ago. I don’t know if there are any other remnants of that hijacker still on my machine.

OK thanks, I’ll look at the site. What’s the Event Viewer and how do I access it?

    • in reply to: Data Manager on vacation #1377974

Nope. I took a screen shot and have just re-read it to make sure. It says Data Manager without a shadow of a doubt.

    • Hi clint,
I thought that I saw two or three additional entries by youself and, I think, Fred or maybe Ted. They referred to the imaging of hard disks. I only skimmed through them, and wanted to absorb them later, but by then, they seemed to be gone. The computer I was using didn’t give me much of a chance to do anything at the time. It was coming up with run-time errors and was threatening to shut down. Then it froze. It just might have been that I could have seen another post instead of mine in the confusion.

Anyway. Could you give me more information on imaging please? What it does and what variatons there are with it? I don’t know much about it. Can you recommend software too please?
      Thanks

    • There were two or three additional handy entries made about imaging this morning. Now you have taken them away. I did view them quickly from my XP machine this morning but it has a defective browser and it crashed within a few minutes. It is gettinig steadily worse and will have to be formatted too. So if I didn’t thank you people for those entries immediately, that was the reason. I was intending to download them later tonight and also thank you with my other (Vista) machine, but those entries have gone. Can you put them back please. I do value your imput.

    • Thank you Ted and Clint for that info. That has made things a lot clearer for me.

I have a few other questions. My preinstalled HD did have a recovery partition when I got the machine. I couldn’t get it to help when I was in trouble with the OS. (I’m still learning about my system. My lack of knowledge, no doubt, also would have made a contribution to the ultimamate system failure that I got. Had I known better, I could maybe have used timely remedial action and perhaps might have been able to use that recovery partition.) By then the whole system was virtually disfunctional. When I reloaded the OS, the installation software left this partitioned area alone. How can I view just what’s on it, if it’s contents weren’t damaged by my previoius problems? Should I now remove this partition and make more space available on my HD?
