Thanks very much, folks, I’ll put some cheese in the emousetrap (and use the delete key from time to time, no doubt.)

If you’re in to ditching Publisher, Serif PagePlus 8PDF is a great publisher and as it’s now no longer than newest version could be very cheap.
Small file sizes, too. Good users’ forum.
      I swear by it…

    • in reply to: Footer Linking to Cells (97/2 & 2K) #736113

Concerning the 255-character limit, the workaround I can think of is to include most of the text in a text box, leaving just things like page numbers and filenames in the ‘real’ footer.
It’s not rocket science to copy the text box onto every page and if you set it with a transparent background and suitable wrap settings it won’t obscure the real footer.
You can also insert a graphic ‘into’ the text box and if you group the box and the picture you’ve got the equivalent of a real footer, a fake footer not constrained to 255 characters, and a picture.
No doubt all the clever methods described above can be used to place the grouped object in the right place on specified pages.
One drawback = excel 97 at least isn’t accurately wysiwig so a bit of trial & error in print preview may be required.
      Best of luck!

      Hans,
Just out of curiosity, how can ordinary people find this out? It’s not in Help. Is there a sort of Super-Help somewhere, or is this Lounge it (or more precisely, you, Steve, Jan and the others?)

      You’re right, Basil(?)
I was confused by the idea of ‘Find’, which does find all instances of the string
      word
      in the list I offered.
To make the countif formula find all the variants I mentioned, it would need to be wildcarded, eg =countif (list, “*word*).
As if anyone would want to…

You might want to refine the test string to something like
      [space]word[space]
to ensure that you were getting only instances of the word
      ‘word’
and not variants like password, wordsmith or swordsmith for that matter.
What happens if the word you want is the last word in the cell and so has no following space (a full stop, a question mark, maybe?) is a good way of prolonging this thread!
Similar considerations can apply if you use autofilter to find instances of a word in a column.
      Best of luck!
