Hm. Just tested with the same document (.docx) in my old version of Word 2007, and Shift F5 did not work. But in the thread that discusses this problem, someone seems to indicate that Shift F5 does work in the patched version of Word 2007.

Not sure what is causing the problem, since the KB shortcut does work with a .docx formatted document in Word 2010.

Sorry that I don’t have a solution for you (unless you are able to get Shift F5 to work).

Does Shift F5 not work for you? It works in my tests (at least, with Word 2010 — and, if memory serves, the same keystroke should work with Word 2007).

There’s actually a right-to-left command that can be added to the Quick Access Toolbar, even if you don’t have any right-to-left languages installed. I just discovered it (right-click the QAT, “Customize Quick Access Toolbar,” then change the drop-down to “All commands,” scroll to “Right-to-Left Text Direction,” click “Add,” then click “OK”). With my cursor within a generated TOC paragraph similar to the one in your image, I clicked that icon, and got results very similar to what you got. Presumably that command somehow got applied to the first heading level in your generated TOC.

Fortunately, there’s also a left-to-right icon (“Left-to-Right Text Direction”) that you can add to the QAT to reverse the direction of the “backwards” paragraph.

      Hope this helps.

      Hi, Pam,

That really is a great tip — something that wouldn’t have occurred to me. (But then, my understanding of content controls is somewhat limited.)

Could there be a short-circuit or other problem with the keyboard?

    • Lou,

I don’t know if this article (by the formidable Diane Poremsky) will help — it refers to a similar issue with Outlook, not with Word — but it might point you in the right direction:

Note that the thread contains links to other possible solutions. I didn’t have time to follow any of them.

      Hi, Lou,

The formatting of TOC entries is determined by TOC styles (there are nine TOC styles available, one for each available heading). You’ll need to format each TOC style individually, but if you end up using only two heading levels, that means editing only two TOC styles.

It’s always preferable to edit the TOC styles rather than applying direct formatting to the generated TOC itself. Keep in mind that the generated TOC is just a code. Also, if you regenerate the TOC, any direct formatting that you’ve applied will be removed and the TOC entry will revert to the formatting of the TOC style.

I’m providing a link to one of my blog posts that explains how to edit the TOC styles in the newer versions of Word. For your version, click the Format menu, Styles and Formatting, and look for the TOC styles you want to modify. If you don’t see the TOC styles listed, click Show > All Styles or Show > Custom.

From that point on, you should be able to follow the instructions in my post for modifying a TOC style and saving your changes, either just in the current document or in that document and all future documents based on the underlying template. If anything isn’t clear, post again and I’ll write more detailed steps.

You’re very welcome! Always glad to help if I can.

And thank you for the compliment about my blog (and the specific post). Wish I could find more time to write new posts. It’s tricky when I’m working a lot, and last year was very busy — fortunately.

It’s called Click and Type. You can disable it in Word 2003 via Tools > Options > Edit. Just click to uncheck the box for the feature, located toward the bottom of the Edit tab. For more information about Click and Type, see my blog post: http://compusavvy.wordpress.com/2010/04/04/aligning-text-with-words-click-and-type-feature/

      Let us know.

How are you attempting to generate the TOC? (Which version of Word, BTW?)

Have you ever had a similar problem, or is this the only document in which the TOC doesn’t generate as expected?

And to expand on Bruce’s comment, when you click the View tab and navigate to the Zoom group, you’ll see an option for “One Page” (as well as the more familiar options of zooming to 100%, zooming to page width, and clicking the “Zoom” icon to open the dialog — where you can choose from several additional options).

Do you notice any difference if you set the autorecover interval to 7 minutes or so?

    • in reply to: Word 2010 on Windows 7: Auto-recover hangs Word #1366278

Understood (I’ve worked in the legal field for more than 26 years). Still, the short interval could be part of the problem.

Does the autorecover in Word 2010 on Windows 7 seem to be taking longer than it did (does) in Word 2003 on Windows XP? Does the firm use a DMS? Are you rolling out any other new software or making changes to hardware that could be slowing things down?

I’ll let others jump in with additional suggestions.

Every 5 minutes is somewhat short for a backup — and, IMHO, probably not necessary. Do you have the same problem when autorecover is set to 10 minutes?

    • in reply to: Can you put a style on the Ribbon in 2010? #1366033

In Word 2010, you can create a custom tab on the Ribbon (without using VBA); if you also create a macro to apply a specific style, you can add the macro to your custom tab. (You can’t add commands to built-in tabs.) Word 2007 does not allow for the creation of custom tabs.

I agree with Pam that the ability to add styles to the Styles Gallery on the Home tab in both versions of Word makes access to those styles very easy and is essentially almost like adding the styles directly to the Ribbon. Not sure what you have in mind, but it’s very possible the Styles Gallery would be an acceptable option for you. Just my two cents.
