AskWoody LoungerKip,
The thing is it works fine for 2-3 weeks then, Boom! no more sound. It’s a real weird problem and I really appreciate all of you guys trying to help me out.
I’ll be out of town from today until maybe next Friday, I have to be operated on.I’ll talk to you guys when I get back!
(I can’t wait to get home)

AskWoody LoungerThere is no error message, I just have NO sound. Then when I go to device mgr. there is a Yellow circle with an exclamation point in the middle indicating a problem with the device.. I wish I could give you more help and input, but this has been going on for about 3 months now and has happened probably 6 times. Thankfully I have system restore which reinstalls the driver. Very strange, I’ve never had anything like this before.

AskWoody LoungerDefrag,
Yes, I have flashed my BIOS for XP and I had this problem BEFORE I installed SP1 which I was hoping would fix the problem, but it didn’t. Thanks very much for your reply and suggestions!Jeff

AskWoody LoungerMark, you hit the nail on the head. When I checked in Device Mgr. my machine is configure as Standard Computer, ACPI is NOT enabled. My machine is working so well other than this minor problem I’m not going to reinstall or attempt to install HAL. MS warns NOT to change this in one of the help sites you sent me.
Thanks to all who responded………I greatly appreciate the help. If it was something simple like changing a BIOS setting or something I’d do it, but I don’t want any hassles with my machine.

AskWoody LoungerMark,
For the average user with a 20 gig HDD would you recommend converting to NTFS from FAT32 if your system is working just fine? In other words, is there any “real” benefits to converting in YOUR opinion? Thanks for your time,

AskWoody LoungerThank you for your input and for taking the time to try and help me figure this out. It doesn’t do it frequently, but when it does you only get to the screen with the XP Home logo on it. Then the next thing you see is this error message: “Windows/System32/ config/system” from here you have to reset the BIOS to boot from the A drive or CD then I go to the repair console and attempt to repair the corrupt Hive or files. I’d really like to know what is causing the corruption in these files!
Thanks again for your help and if you have *any idea* what could be causing them to get corrupted PLEASE let me know.
Regards,

AskWoody LoungerI had this problem when I first installed Norton AV 2002. Everytime I booted up Auto Protect was disabled and I’d have to manually enable it. I un-installed NAV and reinstalled it using all the default settings and haven’t had the problem since. Very strange!!! It’s worth a try in my opinion though………

AskWoody LoungerSam,
Unfortunately this viewer doesn’t have an un-install as you are talking about in Control panel add/remove. So when you go to delete it in Windows Explorer it warns you that it may impact other registered programs which indicates that it file shares. It would have been too nice to simply have an un-install for this viewer!Thank you for the reply Sam,

AskWoody LoungerCharles and all thanks for your input I’ll give it a try. I believe I will have to change it in Normal.dot because if you close Word that some one sent you a document that is in “Normal” view Word will open in Normal view. The way Brooke said, will work if you remember to switch to PageLayout each time before closing. If Charles method works I’ll sure let you know. Once again thanks to all that responded, I really appreciate it.

AskWoody LoungerI see where Microsoft has a new build of Virtual Machine build #3802. I was wondering if anyone has downloaded it yet and how it has performed for them?
Anyone who would like to upgrade their version of VM can download @

Just make sure you pick the correct version for your OS as two are listed.MS claims that they have fixed all the bugs in the earlier versions of Virtual Machine in this new build.
If anyone has downloaded and used VM build 3802 I sure would be interested in any comments you may have or comments in general about MS Virtual Machine Java.
BTW, I really appreciated all the input I received on my SR1 & SR2 updates Post for Word97…..Thanks to all who responded!

AskWoody LoungerBAM,
Thank you VERY much! Your post covered all my questions and more! I wasn’t even aware of the SR3 addition. After seeing how many bugs Word 97 has in it at the Microsoft site you sent me for the SR3 patch I’m definitely going to install the SR1 & SR2 patches, then install SR3. I really appreciate the help, that was very nice of you.Regards,

AskWoody LoungerAndrew,
Thank you kindly for your input. What I heard was there are bugs in Word 97 that SR 1 & SR2 fix, but I sure haven’t found them yet. I have done ALL of MS Windows 98 Updates (sound of knocking on wood!) to my OS and have had VERY good luck with them all working very well. I was hoping that someone on this list could tell me what SR 1&2 are supposed to actually “FIX” in Word 97 because I’m not seeing it do anything wrong. Thanks again for the reply.JeffT.
