Thanks for the info. One thing that has simplified things for me is that I found out that a Clean Install of XP does not use any of the old registry from NT. I was afraid of screwing up the registry by deleting folders directly rather than using an uninstall or Remove Programs procedure. With the Clean Install, I deleted the directories without fear. This information was straight from Microsoft tech support.

      Thanks again for the assistance.

I read that this should have been an option, but I was never offered this option. How do you accomplish this? XP is installed now. I also installed Partition Magic 7.0. What’s the best way to reformat the boot partition and reinstall XP?

The 2gb primary partition limit is a restriction of NT, not XP. I guess what I think I’ll do is a clean install of XP along with a reformat of the primary partition. That will clean everything out. Then, after XP is installed, I’ll install Partition Magic and expand the partition size to something less restrictive.

Thanks for your detailed response. It was really helpful.

Perfect! Thanks for the quick response, I really appreciate it.

I haven’t used or installed XP. I have very limited experience with 2000, daily use of NT Workstation 4.0 and Win98.

Re: Novell, good suggestion, but I’m trying to deal with this slightly differently–I’m asking my IS department if they have a recommendation.

By the way, the 2 reasons I’m interested in upgrading are:
      1) Reduce crashes and lockups on 98 machines
      2) Correct a Powerpoint bug. Bear with me. I’ve created some presentations in Powerpoint 2000 on my Nt Workstation machine that will not display properly on any of the Win98 machines in the office, but look okay on the other NT and Win2000 machines. No idea what’s going on except some weird OS/video driver incompatibility. Haven’t found anything in the MSoft Knowledgebase about this one–Woody’s lounge doesn’t have a solution either.

Merging is fine with me. Mea culpa on the cross posting–I just wasn’t sure where to put the question.

I thought it was clear due to the fact that this is the Windows XP forum, but some are confused. I’m talking about the OS, not Office. I can’t ever foresee the need to upgrade Office 2000.

Since I’m in a corporate environment, I would only consider XP Pro. But my larger question is this: does the community think that XP Pro will be ready for the corporate environment at launch? Many users have been burned in the past buying versions of Windows the first day they become available. Would it be better to buy Win 2000 Pro now, wait 1-2years to upgrade to XP, or should I just wait a few months and buy XP?

That’s pretty good to know. Thanks for the tip.

I’m not interested in Office XP, just Windows XP.

I checked out the web page, and it seems to say that only peer-to-peer networking is enabled. All my computers run on a Novell network, and I don’t have an “extra” I can use just for testing. It doesn’t sound like the Preview program download option would work for me. Am I interpreting the Preview program features/limitations correctly?

Thanks for the information. Can you tell me more about getting the demo version? You mean get the current beta? And I could get a volume license for the beta?! Amazing. Do I just contact MSoft for more info?

I have an NT Server 4.0, but I’ll probably upgrade that next year. It’s just a file and Internet app server. We access our Exchange Server via our larger City network. Not planning to touch that, though I do need to be able to network with it.

That did it! Somehow I’m not sure how this changed, but thanks. Could you briefly explain what the effective difference is in the two versions: with DistinctRow and without?
