Thanks again. I’ll uncheck alogserv again.

Thanks, Leif and Big Al. I had looked at msconfig too, but did not know what to look for. I had both a “” value in my registry as per Leif’s knowledge base reference, and a alogserv entry in msconfig as mentioned by Big Al. I deleted the “” value, and unchecked the alogserv. System32 folder disappeared on reboot. I then turned alogserv back on, and it did not reappear. So, the “” value was the culprit. Thanks again.

Hmm. I also have a wireless network using a cable modem with a router and switch with built-in print server. I went with this approach because I did not like sharing printers through a workstation parallel port, and machines having to be on all the time. Everything works fine under Win XP Pro, XP Home, and Win 98. I do not use ICS at all, as the sharing is handled by the wireless router (which also provide an incoming firewall) and the network. Routers are pretty cheap these days, so that may solve your problem. I can access any printer with no single computer having to be on.

Does anyone know of a utility or tool that will allow me to generate a list of all words, and the number of times each is mentioned, within a Word 2002 document?

The document is a listing of phrases received in response to open-ended questions, and I need to tease out all the themes. Using Word’s advanced find is useful, as it tells me how many times a word occurred. However, I have to provide the word, which is not a neutral way to assess the results.

Sorry about deleting my post – I did so when I figured the answer out myself, and before I saw yours in response. I’ve included your macro in normal.dot since I’;; use it a lot.

      Thanks again.

      Klaus,

Thanks again for the macro. One basic problem though is that I have no macro knowledge, beyond clicking on toolbar buttons for those installed by other apps. What do i have to do with the text file you sent? I feel stupid at this point. I’ve gone to Tools|Macros in Word 2002 but get stuck on what to do next.

Thanks for the macro – I’ll give it a try.

Thanks – I will give it a try, along with the Word macro approach.

I appreciate the offer. Although I mentioned one document, it contains over 30 data sources and types that need to be evaluated separately. Will not ask you to do that. What program fo you use?

That does give me some analysis- thanks.

Thanks, Your methods do work, and I use them. I use the automated menus that open up whenever I insert a blank CD-R or CDC-RAM disk in the drives. WinXP gives me the option of opening a writable cd folder using Windows Explorer. I select the files from there, and run into the problems I described.

Thanks! I followed the procedure and everything is back to normal. The only alteration I made was to drag my DList contacts onto the desktop first, dragging them back after the macro reset all contacts to the default class. Otherwise, I would have lost my contacts listed under each distribution list record.

      Thanks again!

Thanks. It looks exactly like my problem. Resolving it looks a bit daunting, though.

    • in reply to: Windows XP – Installing Norton Anti-Virus 2002 #566656

I had similar problems on my WinXP Pro system. The first attempt to install Norton AV 2002 produced the following:

      “STOP: c0000218
      {registry file error}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
      systemrootsystemsconfigsoftware
or its log or alternate is corrupt, absent or not writeable.”

No amount of effort allowed me to get my operating system back. It was trashed so that even safe mode was unavailable. I used PQ Drive Image to delete WinXP and restore a recent XP image, and decided to forego Norton. A week or so later, I tried again, this time with Norton’s Internet Security. Exact same result.

This time, I did a complete reinstall of the opsys and all applications, rather than a Drive image. Everything running fine with McAfee AV, including a warning on an e-mail attachment.

I generally try to avoid both Norton and McAfee products, from years of either bloat, incompatibilities, or both. Tried Panda AV, but it never warned me of anything and was always causing Outlook email problems.

Very happy with McAfee AV this time around, but am sticking with a router firewall and ZoneAlarm for the security stuff.
